How big a problem is this getting to be?

I know this is a problem for everyone who writes articles and
posts them to article directories. I would like to find out if you
are getting anywhere with this, or you just decided to ignore it.

Today, I found someone who copied a recent article from ezine articles or
selfgrowth.com and is chopping it into 5 posts to his/her blog.

Now they do put the article name and my name at the top and that
is how I found it, but there is no sig file and there are three links
that go to different pages on their blog in my intro and first tip.
They have not done anything so far to the rest of the article -
it is not posted but they say that 5 tips will be posted.

This misuse of articles happens often enough that I am beginning
to wonder if it is worth bothering to write them to desist or not.
I often ignored this in the past as most of these have no contact
info.

I am taking a course right now that encourages people to use
other peoples articles and add to the article if it would repurpose
the information better but be sure to leave the sig file in. It
appears that linking in the article to one of his pages would be
acceptable as well. (He has some really good methods, but I
disagree with this).

From the author perspective, I find this annoying in both instances.
They are allowed to use it intact but not chop it up and add to, link
to things on their site, etc.

What they do before and after the article is their choice. Or have
the rules changed somehow, when I was not looking?

How big of a problem is this getting to be for you?

The DMCA is there for a reason. USE IT!!! We hosts welcome such correspondence -- we don't want to be hosting infringing content any more than you want to see your stuff being ripped off.

      He's actually TEACHING this?

This is plagiaristic, derivative, and is a CLEAR copyright violation. Please PM me this person's name and site URL. I want to see this for myself.

Folks, the ONLY way you are allowed to republish protected works is by following very clear rules:

You must republish the item in it's entirety (if allowed at ALL) AND apply the license terms that are posted with the materials...

OR - You may publish a "small" excerpt in support of another topic...

Or - DON'T USE IT AT ALL.

      Here's the relevant law:

A copyright owner enjoys the exclusive right to reproduce the work, distribute it, display or perform it, and to create derivative works from it, as well as the ability to transfer any or all of these rights.
Not much gray area there, right?

      Jeannie- please PM me!

The person that prompted this today was notified of copywrite infringement and told that I would contact their host if they did not take it down or include the whole article in three days. So I don't ignore it all the time.

The last couple, I forgot to get the host involved. It's oldtimers disease I guess.

In fact I had a big problem a few years ago and the person quoted most of an article on my site in spam mail and their offer on ebay for a weight loss product as though I supported it. An irate phone call alerted me to it, and I had to convince the man that I was not involved. After that he worked with me to give me all the information on it.

I exchanged emails and did contact their host. It took a little while, but was resolved.

Thanks all for the links. I will be taking a look.

Yes Glenn, he is teaching that inside a membership. He is still writing the training and then plans on putting it up on clickbank. One of the reasons
I mentioned that is I wanted to gather some facts, so that I can "speak" to
    hime about this.

What a disservice to teach people this who do not know any better or who don't really care.

Sorry, but this a pet peeve of mine... It's "copyright" not "copywrite." Think of copyright as your rights to your copy, and copywriting as writing copy.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

This is a problem for me also, but I think it's a waste of time to stop it. Just pump out more great content and your site will outrank their easily.

Yes it is a problem.. but for most if they tried to track down every article then they would never be able to spend any time running their business. I did notice one of mine today which is a little different ...

    * My resource is there, so the link to my site exist, but ....

    1. My site has nothing to do with MLM
    2. My site has nothing to do with the kind of picture that is posted
    3. It says written by the webmaster and gives the blog owners name

Multi Level Marketing - Article Marketing Popularity and the Tools Authors Use

But again atleast they did leave my link there...
