A Newb Trying To Make It

Hey everyone, my name is Barnaby Alkire and I'm a student who's taking a break from school right now. I plan on going back in the Spring. In the mean time the goal is to start making money now to start the semester off worry free. If you have any suggestions and ideas please do not hesitate to post what works and what doesn't.

The first failure I made was signing up with Partnerwithpaul.com I gave my 10 bucks for the starter kit and next thing you know my debit card got jacked up. My bank closed it before the transaction went through and now I'm waiting a week to get a new one...

So I'm not going to make the same mistake again. With your help I'll be a successful 20 year old making more than my friends in college.

Hi Barnaby and welcome to the forum!

What you need to realize is this is like creating a business - not like the ease of having a job.

Business owners typically create some kind of business plan, have some money to invest, and should have some awareness of laws pertaining to them and some tax information as well.

How complicated you make it is up to you.

To make money online you have to sell something. Period. You can sell a service (like writing articles) or you can affiliate (sell other peoples stuff be it physical or digital) or you can create your own products to sell.

Determine what it is you want to sell first, and decide on a niche. Figure out the best way to market what ever it is you are selling by studying other business models and how they are doing it. Then go set up shop.

    Good luck.

ps: I will encourage you to get a JOB like your friends and do this on the side. This way you have some income coming in to help fund what ever it is you decide to set up online. You can always quit the job when you reach your desired monthly goals.

How fast do you need to make money?

If you need to make money fast, then start a service or sell a product.

If you don't need to make money right away, start ONE blog or website and build from there. Make sure your site is on something you care about or on a topic where you are an expert. It will be much easier to build your site if you actually want to learn about the topic.

Learn how to setup a domain and hosting account. Learn about basic SEO practices here on the forum, and learn how to do keyword research. Target low competition keywords first, and then target higher competition keywords once you know what you are doing.

Don't spend too much time trying to learn everything before getting started. Let me say that again...do NOT spend a lot of time learning everything. Learn how to do things as you build your site. Don't get overwhelmed with all of the information here in this forum.

Just learn what you need to know, and focus on building your website with tens and then hundreds and thousands of pages.

You have to start by conceptualizing a plan on what you really want to do, as what fellow warrior had already stated. It is better to have a niche that you are familiar with or you are interested in it, start from there and it will be an advantage to you because you are familiar and can understand with the niche that you create and work with.
If you are good in writing articles, you can also provide services to some clients such as blog commenter and etc. There are so many possibilities on how to make a decent earning in the IM business.

All method has its own pros and con. Focus on one strategy until you succeed. For starting, I really do advice you to get a course that specifically about building a list which you can get it in this forum.

    Hey Barnaby

My advice would be first before you do ANYTHING is to take stock of yourself.

Take out a piece of paper and on the one side write "weaknesses" and on the other "strengths". Start writing down everything that comes to mind. Do you have technical knowledge, design skills, experience in selling etc....

Then determine your experitse in a niche. Is there a subject you enjoy talking about. You do more than the average person about anything? What are your hobbies?

Then take stock of your financial situation. How much can you invest in your online business. How soon do you need to start seeing an income. Are you able to go without an income for so long while you get your business of the ground.

Finally take stock of your time. How much time can you commit each day.

Once you have all this information relate it to any systems and strategies you come across and determine a fit. Once you decide on a viable strategy that meets your situation and expertise. Dedicate yourself to it completely. Everything you read should be related to that strategy.

Then take action and you will be successful eventually.

Is it impossible for me or any internet marketers, to handle more than 1 subject (niche) professionally ?

Also, you may want to consider taking the skills you learn online and applying them offline. I've done better working with local businesses than what I've done online. And, yes, starting part-time will make it less stressful. It takes time to make any startup business work.

    Welcome to the WF, Barnaby!

You've got enough time to do this right, but not so much that would can waste any of it.

The brainstorming is critical. The more effort and care you put into those early stages, the better your results - and the faster you'll see them.

Browse the threads here. It's a mixed bag, so skip the chronic whiners and focus on what people are doing that's constructive and useful.

Use the 'Search' in the navigation bar.

Stick with the free stuff; you only need basic information right now. You can buy all the shiny new objects AFTER you're making money. (Frankly, you're not going to miss much if you avoid them altogether.)

What works is developing you own business plan based on your strengths, your preferences, your passions, your goals. Whether you're marketing products or services, your own or someone elses, you don't have to do this alone. When you need help or advice, the WF is 24/7 - whether you want to learn to do it yourself, or outsource it to a pro. (Initially, outsourcing should be severely limited - you're not going to be able to afford it until you're making money, plus you really need to learn and experience first-hand what is involved.)

My advice is to focus on getting a sold foundation first, then you can shift focus afterward to ramping the monetization. If you get ahead of yourself - as many do - you'll end with a poor choice niche, a poor choice of domain name, the wrong hosting, a product that won't sell in your niche, and be singing the blues.

Nothing "just happens" - you've got to have a target, you've got to have a reason for traffic to come to your website, you've to build your list or have some effective means to make your offer and convert visitors into customers then into repeat buyers, even fans.

I know. It sounds like a pretty tall order, but if you go at it systematically, step-by-step, you can build your business faster than probably think. (I did it in less than a year, and now I've regained the financial security that vaporized in the crash in 2008 - and have the freedom to go after other niches, and potentially lucrative ones.)

      Hi Henry,

It's been a while since 2011 and I figure to dive into WF again. I really appreciate your advice and thank you so much for taking the time to respond to the post.

It's funny to read my post from 2011 because I remember exactly how I was feeling at the time. I was determine to make a mark in the sales/marketing industry, but I wasn't sure how.

It took moving to Raleigh from Conn to actually start my journey.

I bought a one way train ticket to Raleigh the beginning of 2013 for a new start. I wasn't sure how things would turn out since the job I had at the mall was part time. Through grace, persistency, and networking I was able to land a cold calling job for a temp agency that summer.

I learned a lot from failing and was able to stick with job till August of last year. That year of cold calling taught me a lot in understanding how much it would take to be successful in business. Shortly after leaving that job I was able to join a startup group called RevBoss. I function as a Sales Development Representative to help clients fill the top of the funnel with qualified prospects. This is all done through email marketing and it's amazing to the results through that approach.

It's been a great experience and I've learned a lot in my six months of being there. Knowing what I know now I wouldn't mind to take another stab at internet marketing.

Anyway, if this applies, what are your approaches to cold email marketing to generate conversations?

What do you mean by "cold email marketing"? If by any chance you're referring to the sending out of bulk, unsolicited email to people who aren't your own opted-in subscribers, then my approach is generally to point out that it's illegal (in most countries) and quite apart from that, can cause appalling problems by putting in jeopardy the security of your own internet services (ISP/ESP/domain-registration/hosting) if recipients hit the "spam" button in their own email client software.

Email marketing that works is permission-based.

the best thing you can do now is start reading , keep reading until you feel knowledgeable in the area you want to pursuit..

Freelancing is a fantastic way to start earning money without much preparation, but if you are wanting to be an internet marketer who earns more than his friends within the first few months, that isn't going to happen, well unless all your friends are unemployed that is

Find a mentor with a good reputation and stick to the plan layed out for you.

If you want a quick start I suggest you get into direct linking with pay per click ads (the easiest and fastest way to make money online).

    Henry had some great advice.

All you really need to start making money tomorrow is a domain name, website & hosting and an autoresponder.

You can definitely learn all about marketing online in this forum for free - the community here is very helpful.

Here are some good Warrior Forum posts to get you started:

How do I start my career as an internet marketer?

Intenet Marketing......Is it a good niche to start with?

Is it possible to make $100 a day online?

I'd say you should start from the basics, learn how to build websites, find your niche, but most importantly in order to NOT have this problem you had with the debit card, only use websites that accept Paypal payments...
You can open dispute on a transaction if the person didn't deliver, but of course you should open a dispute before first connecting the support team of the product or system you just bought, they might just as easily cancel your transaction.

Hope it helped make things clear for you.

Focus always seems to do the trick...

Oh and confidence, confidence in what you do works like a charm.

In terms of systems, there's plenty that work...

You'll simply need to roll up your sleeves and see which one fits you properly.

Join a few affiliate networks, ask what offers are hot, and learn how to promote them like everyone else.

IMHO paying for a course wouldn't do as much as spending a few dollars on clicks will.

      "Cold email marketing"....i.e., "spam"?

I think you are getting too imaginative. You have a job that focuses on email marketing - that's good and you should have learned a lot doing that.

You HAD a job that was "cold calling" - so now you think to combine the two?

If you want to build your own business online around "email marketing" you need something to offer. It's exactly the same as it was when Jill answered you four years ago. You need something to sell...that people want to buy.

To market to an email list you need to build a list of people WILLING to receive emails from you. You can buy lists but unless you pay a lot for them, they aren't any good. Best way is to build your own list of customers who opt in to receive information from you.

Had you started working part time on it four years ago, you'd probably have a profitable list by now. Don't wait another four years to think about it again.
