Wordpress is content management system that was born as blogging platform. But it grew and it`s much more than that today. You can visit the official Wordpress showcase site and you will find all sorts of websites running on wordpress. Hope that answers your question.

The fast and easy way to install it if you have cpanel hosting is to click on Fantastico from the cpanel and choose Wordpress and install it.

If it's "too wordy" for you, maybe you are not ready for it. Yet.

Every software, program, tool has a learning curve and one always has to read the manual.

It is easy to install and to start blogging. Anything beyond that is more complicated.

    Initially, yes... but not necessarily.

There are now a bunch of plugins/themes that make your WP blog
looks and feels like a "normal" site. Many POS and news sites are
WordPress-based, too... so it really depends on what you need.

Yes it is just a content management system that started out mainly for blogging but you can also build static page website by changing the way it works.

Also through the use of plugins you can pretty much customize the whole system into a membership site or anything that you want to use it for.

When you are just starting out best to use it just for blogging though.

I have wordpress installed on many websites. I don't think I have one single blog though. I set most of my wordpress websites up with static pages and use my own html to add links to the various pages. I like my worpress sites to look like websites - not blogs.

I've created some wordpress sites with product plugins that have functionality like a blog. IE: Teaser posts for each product on the main page. But I wouldn't manually create a site this way.

But this is my personal preference. If I were talanted at writing I would probably create more blogs. I would add new articles every day to keep the readers (and google) more interested. But I can't write so I tend to put my energy into other types of promotions.

Wordpress is more or less a site where its possible to frequently and easily add unique content effortlessly and also do what conventional sites can do.

Anything you can do with a site can also be done with a blog.

Wordpress started off with a singular purpose (blogging) and has grown into a robust content management system that is very flexible both in terms of design and delivery. I use Wordpress for most of my sites these days because it is so adaptable; have created over 500 Wordpress sites and counting, so you could say I'm a fan of the platform. Lol

Even still, it's not the answer for everything; for example, while I've developed Wordpress e-commerce stores with 25,000 items, there are other more suitable solutions like Magento for that type of project, IMHO.

As Spletnapot pointed out Wordpress IS a Content Management Software or (CMS) Building simple webpages is probably best done with basic editing software like Visual web developer or Dreamweaver. One of the big advantages of Wordpress is that it is basically a website in a box just install and you're up and running. Plus there are tons of plugins available for free, this makes it possible to put up a very high end website with virtually no technical skill what so ever. Also Wordpress is indeed very Google friendly, Google loves Wordpress

With WP you can use it as a blog and every entry you make to your blog is an individual page, that's an individual page that gets indexed by Google. That means every entry you make to your blog is another opportunity to take advantage of your keywords. However you can create "pages" that are not blog entries, in other words you can create content that isn't actually part of the "blog

For me the biggest advantage of WP is that I can put up a website in about 5 minutes and I'm talking about a site that has a lot of good stuff like a "contact Us" page complete with custom email form and builtin email system also because i got Socrates I can customize my themes and layout quickly and easily

It's really amazing how many websites are actually WP sites. WP just takes so much of the work out of building a site these days almost any site you go to anymore is a WP site. Well it may not be quite that prevalent but it is certainly wide spread.

Wordpress is awesome! A seriously good idea too. I use it for both as there are so many functions you can utlize wordpress for. The premium themes are often better if you want a website.
The main difference between a blog and website is a blog is for Content and a Website is for sales, there is a difference between how you structure them but at the end of the day you need to monetize both by list building and ad revenue, they just have two different approaches.

Like what most warriors said here, wordpress is a content management system (CMS)
used best as a blogging platform.

It is designed for multi-author access (that's the reason why the admin can add multiple users) and content collaboration.

However, these days you can see wordpress used/adapted in different ways. It's easy to see:

    1. Wordpress membership sites
    2. Wordpress article sites
    3. Wordpress Mobile site
    4. Wordpress Product Catalog sites
    5. etc, etc, etc.

It's also popular to internet marketers worldwide because it's easy to learn and use.

Hope that helped you understand wordpress better

WordPress is where blog and CMS meet. You can easily have a blog within a CMS style website. It's highly versatile and you can adjust your website to your needs as you go along.

One reason why I choose WordPress is because is allows you to rank fairly quickly. Google seems to prefer websites created on top of WordPress because search engine optimization is already built in to a certain extent. And with all the great, easy to use plugins available, you can really dig into SEO. It's a godsend if you're not familiar with that side of webmastering.

Yes, you need a domain and hosting.

The "free" blogs at wordpress.COM are not worth mentioning in this context.

        You need:
        - a domain
        - hosting
        - the downloaded WP package from wordpress.ORG

WordPress is an awesome blogging platform.

Sadly many people use it just for everything. I've seen so many sites that have 50 + plugins installed. Seriously, that is just *******izing WordPress.

These pages take 7 seconds or more to load, need an update of a plugin every day, and are just a security and maintenance nightmare.

If you want a blog, use WordPress.
If you want a site, and all you know is WordPress, use it.

If you have to install more than 10-15 Plugins, you're maybe better off by starting with another system.

There are unlimited options. That's like asking "how do I make a business site"?

As the posts in this thread have outlined WP can be tweaked using themes and plugins to mold the standard look and feel of WP into something more useful for your use.

Or....if you know CSS you can make it look like any website you can think of.

If you don't know WP at all I would suggest installing it on a website to test it out. You can always go to WordPress.com — Get a Free Blog Here and create a free account to see how it works. Keep in mind that you are limited creating a free wordpress site on wordpress.com but at least you can jump in and see some of the buttons.

Here's a decent looking WP business website theme:

Wordpress is a great tool to create blogs without hosting them on external hosts that cost money. This is why it's also a great tool to create websites and not only blogs, as Wordpress gives you a lot of freedom and a very simple way to put up a site, in terms of design, content options, functionality etc.

Personally I use it for a couple of blogs and also a few websites.

The down side of Wordpress and the fact that it is free is that it's under the wordpress domain and not your own. i.e. "nameofsite.wordpress.com"
This has some SEO disadvantages, so it depends on how you promote your site.

If you are into blogging or making money online with a website, you definitely must have a wordpress website.

In the long run, wordpress websites will be the dominant website platform.

    Warmest Regards,

WordPress is an incredible content management system (CMS) that handles blogs as well as "normal" websites. It doesn't take much work to make a WP site look like a regular website.

In fact, they are one in the same. It really has more to do with display than function. A blog simply has pages and posts, posts being the central theme to a blog. Blog posts are chronicled from last to first.

A website, on the other hand, is focused on pages. These pages are displayed in a menu.

Changing from one display mechanism to another is a simple matter of modifying one setting in WordPress. There is nothing complicated about it.

Unless you're running a very complex ecommerce website, WordPress should be suitable for nearly any website, blog or not.

    Hey,

It's really not that difficult to install Wordpress, if your with any of the mainstream hosting companies (bluehost, hostgator, ect)... just login to your cPanel and click on SimpleScripts (or Fantastico as suggested by #Suzanne) and it should be straight forward from then on.

If your still finding it difficult or have any questions, a simply search on YouTube "set up wordpress" will suffice and will take you through the entire process.

    Hope this helps,

    Colin

P.S - nothing is too hard when you put your mind to it.

It started out as a simple blogging platform and has grown.

Between the newest layouts and the plugins that are now available, you can use it for almost everything.

I have built blogs and business sites on it. You can also create simple landing pages, member sites, and more.

If you can think of it, there is probably a way to do it with WordPress.
