2 things confusing me about selling a website

Hi

I've got a website that i think i want to get rid of in the coming weeks. The usually reasons, lost interest in it, not a niche I'm very knowledgeable in, need the money etc.

Was most probably going to put it on flippa, but there are a couple of issue's (pretty elementary stuff) holding me back.

1. I don't know how you move the website (wordpress)... How do you actually give the buyer their new website?

2. I don't know how to move/push a domain over to them. How is it done? is it easy?

I know this is really basic 101 stuff, but it's something I've always managed to somehow avoid learning or doing.

    Yes, I can answer that:

Regarding moving a web site: I just reviewed a WSO that offers a solution for that. Basically a plugin that backups a web site easily and you can then give it to the buyer.

    Other than that:
    1. download all the files to your computer
    2. download a backup of the database to your computer

You can then give the buyer the 2 files.

But as you sell the domain with the web site you just have to change ownership of the web site.
The process depends on your hosting company. It is very easy. There is eitehr some kind of button that you push or you have to submit a support ticket for that.

      thanks.

When you say "download all the files to you computer" - can that be done by just clicking the "Export" button in wordpress admin? would that inlcude the images too?

My domains are mostly hosted with godaddy, DNS pointing at hostgator.

that's fine, but most buyers want the seller to install the website to their web hosting.

To OP, you can also hire someone from freelancer.com for very cheap to do the task.

I think they use Escrow account or so for fund transfer. This Escrow is a neutral or middleman that closes the deal when your site has gotten a real buyer that deposit money with them. Normally, you are suppose to add some widget to prove you are the owner of the site before the sale closes thou not a must.

When the site is sold, its all about handing out the username and password to the new owner and talking to your hosting company to help do the transfer.

I've sold dozens of sites so I'm relatively experienced in this area. The EASIEST way to handle both is to give the new owner access to the registrar account & hosting account and have them change the billing details. Then there's no need to move anything at all. Obviously this is only an option if the website is the only one in both accounts.

To move the website files just compress everything in the public_html folder and then download the zip file to your desktop. You can export the database from phpmyadmin in your cpanel and save that to your desktop as well. Then just give both files to the buyer.

As for the domain name, the process is a bit different with each registrar. Usually it's easiest to have them get an account with the same registrar and then the push is easy. You can click on the domain within your registrar account and just click on account change or push domain to another account.

This wouldn't be acceptable for me as a buyer. I have two hosting accounts and do not want any more. The site would have to be transferred to my existing hosting.

Your questions have been answered, but a word of advice: dont give them your domain registrar account, its easy enough to transfer.

Also you will be making things overcomplicated by using escrow. If your site is not making any money, you wont be able to sell it for much so paypal will be fine. Sure you can still get burnt, but not everyone is a scumbag. I've done some pretty big deals with paypal alone.

I'm always looking to buy/sell sites so PM me some details
