Hey Guys,

I feel like my mom back in the early 1990s when she went to buy the Oingo Boingo CD at the "record store" (they were places where people bought music in the "old days" before iTunes, Napster and MP3s ...

And when the clerk asked whether she needed help, she said, "I'm looking for 'Oinkity Boinkity'". ;-)

I've gone to Twitter because I know it's very popular. And I signed up for an account there.

And I made one micro-blog post.

Yet, I don't get it!

I've followed some people I respect on Twitter, and I don't understand the culture.

Can you enlighten me to what it is and how to become part of that world?

The idea of short posts is fun, and the easiness and quickness of it all appeals to me, too.

I just feel like there's some language translation or missing key somewhere that I'm hoping you can give me.

Thanks,
Dan

    Hi Dan,
Try to think of it as a way to say hello to friends and business associates in passing, along the way you can give short tidbits of whats happening in your life.

Even though many people use it to try to attract new clients and visitors to their blogs and websites. it is pretty much an informal atmosphere.

when "tweeting" just be yourself and try not to be too aggressive in promoting anything, otherwise you wont get anywhere with twitter.

make a few posts aday and eventually you will find others that you will want to know what is going on with you and vice versa.

I am sure there are other views on twitter and I am sure someone will be around to let you know theirs.

I can sympathize Dan! I had looked at twitter and thought it looked silly. Then I ran across a $7 WSO about Twitter and it helped explain a little bit about the members and how to best use it for networking. You might want to look into the WSO.

Once you understand it can get kind of fun...lol

Twitter is certainly different. You can't approach it like you would something like myspace. I think that getting in there and doing it for a bit will help you see and better understand how it works. Just be active and see where it leads you.

Wild...You've got some "Bob Proctor" dealy in your sig...and you're asking about Twitter.

Did you know that there's some dickhead trolling Twitter lately signing up dozens of accounts like _Bob_Proctor__, _Bob_Proctor, __Bob_Proctor___, Etc. and spamming the Fu*K out of everyone?

    That's not you, is it...?

    Jeez, I hope not.

    Thanks guys.

Maybe it's my background from 10 years in newspapers, where to me Twitter seemed like the stereotype of the weekly papers, along the lines of:

: Mabel had Sue-Ann over for today

I suppose my reaction was that of anyone catching just one sentence in a conversation and not getting it in context.

Maybe that's the key thing - it's just Person A and Person B talking back and forth to each other, with three or four or more conversations going on within theirs, and everyone just keeps track of their conversation and has fun with it.

I think like Matt said, just do it for a while and it'll start becoming familiar.

Glenn, no. My sum total experience with Twitter was trying to set up my name, DanKlatt, seeing it was taken and thinking that may have been me at some earlier point, not finding the right login combination; registering as DanielKlatt, making one post or Tweet I think they're called... and visiting about 3 others' (not sure of the "correct" word)... Twitters.

Although thanks for pointing out that Bob Proctor may be active on Twitter. He would be a good one for me to model, because we teach similar things.

    Warmly,
    Dan

      Dan ...

I mainly see Twitter as a way to build relationships with your "followers" with what I call:

      "Quantum Relationship Posts"

Basically ... (as was said before) ... you just post topics about your life, business, day and "stuff", and people will get to know more about you in little bites instead of drowning them in a biography.

The more you do this, the more your followers will feel they know you. And if you are a marketer, that is KEY.

People want to work with or buy from people that they KNOW. And with Twitter, they get to know you a little bit at a time and you build a "long term relationship" with them.

NOW ... that being said ... I also don't have the time to keep "tweeting" everyone, everytime I do something. Yes, there are scripts, SMS things for phone ... but I never get around to setting them up :p

One of my goals this year is to make better use of Twitter. Maybe I'll see you out there!

Twitter is a lot of things but to me mainly it is a place where I can find like minded people in Internet Marketing as well as people in each of my nuiches that I can easily learn from.

I have not been using Twitter to market to people at all but instead have used it as a sounding board as well as a place to find great content on blogs and sites.

And yes there is also a lot of background noise that has nothing to do with anything.

Try following a lot of people and see if you can pinpoint conversations that are interesting and learn from Twitter as well.

    Hi Bob,

Thank you, that helps me feel like I get it now.

I must say, it's nice seeing you at the forum. I think I've been a subscriber of yours maybe since the late '90s.

Your post helps me see the value in the non-focused tweets. I think of myself as a personal growth teacher where the things I say have to help people learn and grow and become a better person. And I can appreciate how limited that would be in connecting with people and letting them get to know me.

    Great stuff, thanks!

Thanks Billnad, I can appreciate what you're saying, too. Almost everyday I'm copying down things to blog about or write articles on.

I had not thought to use Twitter for that.

Actually, that reminds me of why I went to Twitter in the first place, because I think it was a forum post where someone said you can get great headlines by looking up which Tweets were most popular.

    Point well taken.

I don't think twitter is that easy to get traffic or make money from. The followers have already know me and visit my sites so twitter is just another referrer when I post something new on my sites and update.

I use Twitter like I would use a forum. Ask questions. Answer questions. Make observations. Respond to other's observation. I have twice the twitter followers as I do blog subscribers and I can join a conversation just about every minute of the day.

Thanks, guys. That gives me a more well-rounded education on Twitter.

And just doing it twice tonight, it is pretty fun

Curious to see only maybe a little more than half the people responding to my question have their Twitter in their Warrior Forum profile. I think I'm ready to do that myself and start letting my subscribers know to follow me on Twitter.

Oh and by the way... I think it's called @Billnad - just a friendly FYI - your Warrior Forum sig refers to a 2008 goal. Just thought you might appreciate knowing that

    Hi Dan,

Just join this thread late but thought you might find the free Twitter Handbook (you do have to sign up though) in Sandy Hall's thread helpful. It's in post #2 in this thread http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...found-you.html

There's also a free "Mastering Twitter" ebook in Kevin Riley's Product Creation Labs latest. You'll find it about half way down the article Product Creation Labs -- Issue 103

    Hi Nigel,

Thank you for digging up those links. I read the Twitteroid report and made many improvements to both my understanding of Twitter, and my Twitter page!

Dan, try to read some of the posts by Dana W here on the forum.

From everything I have seen, she really knows what she is talking about.

Personally, I've found twitter to be too labor intensive as goofy as that might sound. At this point, I just use it for "fun" and nothing else

    Hi Jeremy,

I think doing anything like Twitter or Web 2.0 stuff for fun is the right way too approach it. Because then you enjoy it and it's not work. (And that comes across in what you do.)

    Hi Kim,

After Glenn mentioned it, I went to twitter.com/BobProctor and saw it was suspended. Same with another variation that came up.

I was looking forward to seeing what the real person known as Bob Proctor was saying with Twitter, because I appreciate the message he speaks.

Well Dan. There is actually a short video on Twitter that really does make everything clear. Just visit the website and before even you sign in, go to "WATCH A VIDEO". The exact thing happened to me, I didn't understand what the point of Twitter was but after I watched that video it all made sense. Basically, you are meant to post short comments so people who are following you know what you are up to all the time. I hope that helped.

You know the "status" or "what am I doing" thing on sites
    like Facebook and Myspace?

Twitter is just an application which focuses on that, with
the additional feature of allowing you to interact with
other people like in a chatroom.

    Thanks, guys.

Pete that video really helped me see the light - how all these sites work together and how to think of your blog.

That should be mandatory viewing for anyone entering the new social era.
