You don't say which country you are in. If you are in the UK, then Business Link provide advise for start up businesses. There might be something similar in your country. The things I would add are:

Make sure you have the correct insurances for running your business - home (running a business from), car (using for business) and any professional insurances you might need.

Make sure you are registered to pay National Insurance as a self-employed person (or whatever the equivalent is in your country) and you have notified your Tax Office that you are starting this business so they can advise you on any forms, etc you need to fill in.

I have created a couple products based on what you are looking for tonight.

I will tell you that the goal of "increasing brand awareness" is a fine goal, but not one that will work so much with small companies.

Corporations worry about "increasing brand awareness", while small businesses in your local community are more concerned with trackable sales results.

You can achieve the latter for your clients, if you know what to do to get the job done.

Building a website and doing SEO should be nothing more than a "get your foot in the door offer". Then you should look at processes that are more profitable for you and your client.

The local business owner is willing to give you 3-4 months to show them that you are putting dollars back into their business, or they will leave you without malice.

So the challenge is to provide your clients evidence that you are adding dollars to their bottom line as quickly as possible.

A website with local SEO will generally only satisfy your client's ego, until which time your client starts looking for the proof that you are bringing new dollars into their business.

You need to figure out how you can put dollars into your client's cash register within the first 3-4 months, or you will lose their business and you will find that bad news travels faster than good news.

But if you can deliver dollars to your client's cash register, then you could very well have a client for life.

Figure out how to provide your services AND to show your clients the real money, and you will rock as a local marketing consultant. Fail to prove to your clients that your service is a good investment, and your business will die on the vine.

Fortunately for you, both outcomes are within your control, if only you do what it takes to do what needs to be done.
