an exact search refers to the results you would see when you type something into google with " " around it.

meaning when you type iphone repair into google, you get results for iphone repair, iphone, and repair. with the top results usually being closer to your exact search which was iphone repair.

but if you type in "iphone repair" google will only give you results for the exact phrase (iphone repair). all of their keyword tools work the same way as far as i know.

so anything you put in "xxx" will give you only exact matches and traffic estimates.

Yes, with MOST of my Google Adwords campaigns I only use phrase and exact. You can make sales with broad and also spot more keywords that you should be bidding on but it can also cost you a lot of money so it pays to know the difference.

another important thing to note about broad vs exact phrases is that unless you use the negative keyword options or always use only exact keywords, you will be recieveing clicks from user who searched for (free iphone repair)

so they want something for free. in most cases, you need to use negative keywords to let google know that you dont want your ad to be shown to people who search for (free iphone repair)

    hope that makes sense.

To make thing simplier here's how it is:
BROAD: the keywords searched don't have an exact order and can be searched with other terms in it.
example for your case: iphone repair services in london ; how to repair iphone london; iphone broke need to repair london ; etc

Phrase: your keyword is used in a phrase
example: iphone repair london cheap ; best iphone repair london ; cheap iphone repair london etc.

Exact: your exact keyword is searched no extra words, the exact same order
this includes only 1 keyword which is your mentioned one: iphone repair london

So you can see that the exact keyword is obviously searched less, when the broad one is searched more and the phrase one is somewhere in the middle.

When doing keyword research it's important to target exact terms that get traffic. I did the mistake once to target a broad keyword that was getting 500 daily searches but the exact version of it was getting 3... so I was wondering why the hell I get no traffic even though I'm ranking first ... Anyway, lesson learned for me.

As for your question, the best answer is that you can only make an informed guess. That's why you use keyword generation tools. The good ones will generate a list of keywords based on your original keyword. You can then go through that list and look at search numbers for the other permutations of your original keywords.

You should use both the exact and the phrase methods. To start out I would also try the broad match but you need to set up some tracking to make sure it is worth keeping.

Just keep monitoring the campaigns to see which work the best for you.

  • While selecting your keyword you should check the exact search of your keyword. "phone repair london" this is your exact keyword,so you actually want to know how many people type this phrase in Google exactly like this. Just 720 persons are interested in your keywords. And this is too low number, I guess . If you use the broad search numbers, you won't get an idea does this keyword worse to make a site and waste your time.
