Question about profiles for forums and links

Hey everyone.

I kept hearing things that in order to get backlinks one of the methods is to create forum profiles with your link and if possible signature.

My question is this though. When you register for a forum should you feel up the information about yourself, avatar, etc... ? If you do, is it OK to give some random information and some random pictures or it would be a better idea not to fill up those fields and avatar in the first place?

Also, correct me if I'm wrong. If I'm using in the signature field link to one of my pages in my blog, I'm supposedly should be getting a backlink from the forum, but not necessarily the keyword I'm targeting if I'm not using that keyword in the signature. Is that correct? I'm just confused with how to promote your keywords right now (if anyone could help me with how to promote my specific keyword would be greatly appreciated, as I'm stuck here right now).

I think I get what you're asking here!

Yes, backlinks from a forum would count as backlinks to your website. However, most feel that forum backlinks are fairly low value in Google's eyes nowadays.

Also note that you CAN use your keywords in your signature within a forum. Just don't expect the links from every page you post on to "count" as a "vote" for your website. 1,000 links from 1,000 pages on a domain is NOT the same as 1,000 links from 1,000 different websites.
