SEO considerations for Multiple URL's?

Hi everyone,

Quick question.

I am in a position where I have content and keyword rich url's.

I will have several url's pointing at one website. The site is run off wordpress.

Now, how will search engines handle the multiple url's? Will they index the more relevant keyword based on searches? Meaning, if someone types in a keyword string that is similar to url 1 vs url 2, will url 1 be displayed (obviously keeping in mind that if the content isn't good, most of this won't matter.)

I ask because if the search engines won't distinguish when it comes to multiple domains for 1 url, then is there really any point in having more than 1 domain, as long as you pick the domain that has the majority of search queries vs. lower competition?

Thanks very much!

You don't want multiple domain names pointing to the same site. It will not help your rankings at all and might even hurt your rankings. You would be much better off taking each of these domains and building a separate site with unique content for your niche. This way you might even be able to own multiple rankings on the SERPs.

In fact, WordPress will redirect your visitor to the domain that it is configured for. This means that the GoogleBot would be redirected as well when trying to crawl your multiple domains an would only end up indexing whatever it got redirected to, which would be the domain that you configured in WordPress.

    Hope this helps.

Wilson, that helps immensely, thank you. I was noticing the redirect to the original domain, that's why I asked. Well, at least I used the better domain right off the bat.

A keyword rich domain is gold when it comes to ranking quickly if its a 100% match to the search querie. So if they are all related to the same niche, its silly not trying to get them ranked.

Its fine to link to the one main domain if all the other domains are on dedicated IP addresses. If you have multiple domains on the one hosting account, you will probably find they are on a shared IP address. This is a red flag to Google that you may be manipulating your backlinks and you will get penalized for it. They wont be able to tell you own all the domains if each one is on a dedicated IP.

Once the domains are ranked, a simple 301 redirect to your main domain will do the trick.
