Money site just dropped! What do I do?

Hi, I have been trolling around this forum for a couple weeks now and decided not to keep this a secret any longer.

About two months ago, I had my very first site indexed in Google and after a week being on the 2nd page it suddenly dropped to the 5th. A friend of mine told me about the Google dance and how this happens to every new site getting indexed. However, my site shot up to the fourth page instantly once I removed many junky backlinks linking to it. Can anybody explain any effective backlinking strategies that would help my rankings get to the top? I am fairly new to this seo stuff.

    Does your website have a lot of unique content? If not, I'd worry about that before anything relating to backlinks. The latest huge Google update put a huge emphasis on site design, content, and structure.

    If you don't have at least 2 paragraphs of unique content on each indexable page on your website, I'd start there!

      Well, two paragraphs sounds like a little on the low side.

      I suggest 500 to 800 words of excellent and 100% unique and helpful content per page.

        You see, the thing is, my website was not meant to be helpful. It is only a directory where I've listed flower shops located in nyc.

        Should I still add some pages on content on there, maybe about flowers or stuff? And once the content is there how do I go about promoting it?

    Just have to keep at it, there's several ways to get your site to the front page of google, it's really more about trial and experimentation and not giving up.
