You can do the article marketing first but at the same time you will need the SEO technical aspect especially the keyword observation for monthly demand and competition in search engines and also the anchor text.. You will need all these and a lot more to optimize your site..

Let's check what other `oldtimers' here say about them..

Actually, I don't think it's that unusual to put out an ebook while you are still learning. Fake it 'til you make it, right?

Then you will get fake results...

Why bother when there are a bunch of others

I'm not saying there will be good results. I just think a lot of people do this when they start out.

Ya, you don't have to spend years or become an experienced marketer to write an ebook. But I said you should write about subjects or niches that you know at least a little about.

If you write an ebook about IM when you don't know anything about IM, that will be worthless both for the reader and the writer.

Good advice. That's how most of us started (even if we don't say )

Article Marketing is quite effective, but takes a LOT of time and also takes ages before you'll start seeing results. Effective SEO is the best way to go, takes quite a bit of time to learn the advanced strategies but once you have that down you're good.

Focus on On-page SEO for now, get a few posts up and leave the article marketing for a bit later, that should not be in the "first 10 steps to take as a newbie".

Your approach depends on your ultimate objective. If you are building a list to send offers of affiliate products and that's all, a full blown blog may not be necessary, providing you are well versed in paid traffic, article marketing, and video marketing.

Just posting content to your blog will not drive traffic, you will have to do lots of link building and research work to select your keywords.

Do one thing. Write 2 versions of every article you write. Submit one to your blog and link the resource box to your squeeze page. Submit the second version to article directories, link networks, blog networks to boost your incoming links.

On your squeeze page have a small link to your blog at the bottom, just to get the search engines thru your blog. Make sure the link is not very visible to your visitors or else your squeeze page conversion will suffer. Hope this helps...

About driving traffic, you may use PPC or media buys if you do not want to make a blog. Just send people directly to your squeeze page. This may be an expensive way though, depending on your target niche.

However, seriously consider making a blog/site and do some good SEO...if just for the future.

Article Marketing is the way to go(for some guys out there, no it is not dead) and SEO would also be a good idea(outsourced, unless you have your own SEO team which then is great).
