Do you need permission to link to another site's page?

Do you have to get permission to link to a page? I am interested in linking my articles to a couple of niche sites do I need to ask them? Can anyone deny you the right to link to them.

I have been told by some people, if you link to someone and they ask you to remove their link, then it is polite to do so.

Link to them. If they have any sense, they'll appreciate it.

You would have thought so, but American Express were at one time preventing people from linking to them without permission.

There is a difference between linking to someones site (as in referring) and hot linking to a sites images (which takes up their bandwidth and resources)

I don't know the particulars for AMX but perhaps they were preventing hotlinking.

I've had to prevent hotlinking on several of my stores. People selling the same product as I am would just use my images but instead of stealing them by copying and hosting on their own server they were hotlinking directly to my images.

I know of no logical reason why someone wouldn't want you to link to their site if its a typical referral type link.

When was this? 1993? (To the OP)

Hotlinking is frowned upon 99% of the time. Perhaps they were hotlinkign the image of the american express logo

2002 A long a time ago agreed but I just wanted to check anyway. Thanks Debbie for the hotlinking insight I was not aware of this.

It's professional to ask if you can link to someone but generally just link to them and if they ask you to remove it, kindly do so.

Some websites may not have budgeted for the extra traffic. This can increase their costs which they may not want to do.

Have you been sniffing glue? LOL

Seriously - NONE of my clients has ever told me that they don't want anyone linking to them because they can't handle the extra work.

          Oh good grief...
I don't know anyone complaining about too much traffic!

Asking someone if you can link to their site is ridiculous.

I have seen weirdos who want to have control over who links to them (saw one at NicheBot I believe) - but other than those misfits, no-one would have any objection!
