Can I legally add Clickbank customers emails to Aweber?... or do I need them to opt in after purchase?

Aweber do not allow you to add email addresses yourself. Subscribers must opt-in to your list voluntarily.

I was just looking at their site and it said that you could import list.

"Legal" is one issue (and as Istvan rightly comments above, not something about which you should try to inform yourself in a forum).

"In compliance with Aweber's terms of service" is a different issue, in the sense that some things which are perfectly legal are still disallowed by them.

You can, under some circumstances (and you need to discuss those circumstances with Aweber, since it's ultimately their decision), but "importing a list" isn't the same as "adding people yourself".

"Importing a list" refers to the facility to use Aweber's service to contact people who have previously opted in to be on your list. And even then, Aweber will typically require you to send such people, in the first instance, only an email requesting confirmation that they want to be on your list.

Agreed, under certain circumstances they may allow you to import a list you have built with another company, but they will insist you run that list through their opt-in process. In other words, they will send an email to each address on the list and invite each person to opt-in once more.

It is not a simple case of you providing Aweber with a list of names to be added to your account.

On Awebers website it said that they would manually verify the list.

So when you add a list, the list has to go through the opt-in process?

What if you are importing a list from another company such as Icontact or Get Response. Will your entire list that has already opted in have to re opt in for Aweber?

Yes, the send emails to everyone on the list you wish to import and they have to re-optin again.

Some folks DO do this, and as a customer, I will tell you that it turns me off IMMENSELY and I will purposely UNsubscribed since I wasn't clearly asked for permission.

Not a good business ethic, IMHO

Since they are already your customers, i.e. they bought from you... you can contact them because you have a business relation. This is how most of the time the "spam laws" are explained here by experts.

Technically, some scripts can add buyers automatically to your aweber list (with or without double optin). You can also ask them on your download page to subscribe for updates - in my experience over 90% do subscribe.

Thanks, I will be setting up an op-tin after purchase for all future customers. I just wanted to make sure that I would be able to add my extensive list of past customers.

After starting this thread I ended up contacting Aweber to see what they had to say on the subject, so I will post that information when I get it.

So to all the Clickbank vendors and product sellers out there. Do you add your customers to your list without having them opt-in?.. or do you have them opt-in?

Its totally fine and aweber does allow you to import your list. The only thing is that your subscribers will have to opt in to the list. So, it is not like you will be putting them on the list without their consent.

I don't mind it as long as I am a customer of you and not some other person. I have also noticed that my email is added to more than just one list from the provider which I don't think is ok. I pay for x product and get on that list, but then I am added to product xz list as well. At that point I opt out of the list.
