IM Changes since mid 2009

Hi all,

Just wondering if someone would be kind enough to update me or point me in the direction of any significant changes in the IM world since mid 2009.

I was actively involved in the IM scene around that time, but left to take up a day job which was very time consuming and I haven't touched IM since then (just in case you were wondering, having a "real job" still sucks ;-)). I'm ready to get involved again but just want a quick refresher as to what major changes (if any) have occured since '09.

When I was last marketing I was using SEO techniques for page ranking (market samurai to rank for short and longtail keywords, creating backlinks on various high PR blogs and .edu sites, linkwheels, CPC on adwords and yahoo, as well as promoting some CPA offers on various blogs and review sites.

Has there been any major changes with algorithm updates? tecnhiques updated/outdated since then? That kind of stuff.

    The major article directories died in Google in March of 2011.

    Since 09, Google has changed a whole lot. Do a quick search for panda slap and you'll see plenty of sites that were hurt with the changes introduced.

    SEO has changed a bunch since then. And I mean a bunch. Today you need to focus more and more on your on-page SEO and provide great content.

    If you have more than five minutes you'll find this page by SEOmoz on the history of Google Algo changes quite informative.

    Speaking strictly off-page techniques? High PR Homepage Backlinks are all the craze now, with several new "networks" seemingly popping every month. Most are pricey, but work well for medium to low competition keywords.

    Xrumer is still around and is a mixed bag of whatever-the-hell you get that month. Google seems to have picked up on these links as it will send your site dancing uncontrollably until you flesh out your link profile.

    Speaking of that, Press Releases are a good way to generate links from popular and well-trusted sites. I use this for every new site to stabilize my dance. Guest posting is another favorite of mine, especially when you can find dofollow sources that have some serious page rank.

    .edu and .gov links are still the holy grail of the SEO building community, and even then, you'll find plenty of people shilling craptacular "blog comments" on .edu or .gov pages. Score yourself a contextual link (it can be done!) on a high PR .edu or .gov page and you'll be at the top of the mountain. Not cheap, but damn... powerful.

      Awesome post BloggingPro. Wow things do move fast when you step away for a while!

      Did we ever resolve the debate on the nofollow backlinks not counting towards ranking? Last time I remember reading a multitude of posts from people on both sides of the camp, some said don't bother with nofollow as they don't count, some said bother with them to get a more complete link profile. Some even said that google will follow them anyway and you can rank well with them.

      This Panda thing sounds like a bit of a nightmare for a few sites. I still do see a lot of article sites ranking when doing normal searches.

      Are marketers not really bothering with article marketing for backlinks and click-thrus anymore?
