Best Way To Increase Members On Targeted Forum?

I have started a forum for my website that has been growing daily but have noticed no new members due to the lack of posts and member count. I know there is already a few forums related to my category online but I am going to offer a few different things that the others are not, so I am hoping that makes it more appealing. I am trying to find a way to get more members to register.

Should I create a few accounts myself and start posting threads to fill up the forum? Or should I leave it and just wait for people to sign up?

I am going to add a point system for the forum which will allow members to receive points for posting. The points will give them the option to buy custom nicknames, custom avatars, virtual gifts, and can even spend the points on real prizes related to boating, fishing, and water sports.

What do you think of this point system idea?

    you can try to ask those members to refer their friends etc...and give out the prize to whoever referred the most friend..this is just a small suggestion

    you can also hang out in forum to interact to promote your forum...

    You should look into facebook marketing. Using facebook can get your site loads of traffic, but of course it will take time to build up. Also look into getting your site ranked in google and pay per click. Any targeted traffic to your site would be great.

    Also, you can offer prizes for top posters, but you should wait tell you have a decent amount of members before you do this. Offer something that is in the same niche of your website and it will motivate people more.
