Domain registering and hosting?

I need to register my first domain name for my WP site.
I'm thinking of using Host Gator for the hosting, but I don't believe
they offer the domain registration.
Anyway should I use different services for registration and hosting?
I've heard that this is a good idea, but don't know why.
Also anyone like another host better than HG and if so why?
They seem to be competitively priced and offer most of the features
one would need. Just don't know about the service till you've tried them,
unless you have a forum like this with members experienced in all the
phases of internet marketing and willing to share that information to
hopefully save me from a bad experience.

It is a good idea to separate the two IMHO. I do that on some of my sites and blogs. You can register with someone such as GoDaddy or Yahoo, and then host with Hostgator. It's just nice not to have all your eggs in the same basket so to speak. Many people do seprate the two, but then again many others don't. You'll probably find a pretty even split. The reasoning is that if you do have a problem with your host, you won't also have a problem with tho domain registrar.
    Hope that helps,

    elaway,

Godaddy.com is by the far the largest and most popular domain registrar on the web - you can't go wrong with them.

Do they have hosting services as well, but you'll get a much better deal with hostgator (which is a very established and well-liked host).

    Hope this helps,
    Liz

I use Hostgator and 1 and 1 for my domain. It's best to use separate companies for the same reason as someone else mentioned. If something were in dispute with the hosting company and you have your domain there they can freeze your account and you're done. If separate you just point your domain to another host if your host goes wacky.

Thanks to all for your tips and advice. I have decided to host with Host Gator and register the domain with Go Daddy.
The only problem I found with HG is they don't allow the use of java script
to place script on your site. And I like for instance stat counter which requires java script in order to place the hidden counter on the site.
    Maybe I'll find another solution.

      Thats interesting ...

I never heard that Hostgator didn't allow javascript (then again I have not used them in a while).

What kind of hosting did you get? A single account or a reseller account.

ALSO ... I'm very pleased with the services of LiquidWeb.com and their VPS (virtual private servers) to allow me to build TONS of websites on my server (about $60 for the smaller box).

In order to set the record straight. I just received another reply to the ticket I had logged at Host Gator. There was obviously a misunderstanding. The email answer is below. I will be using HG.

        Hello,

I have asked one of our server administrators about the script you provided. He informed me that it should run fine on the server, I was evidently misunderstanding the restrictions. It should run fine when put into your page, we just do not offer JSP/Java servers. I apologize for that information. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

        Best Regards,

Check out Namecheap, I used to use GoDaddy until the
first year ended and my PayPal account was charged $22
FOR THE SECOND YEAR. Also use the coupon code
"INTERFACE" for a $8.81 yearly regristration. It's also
very easy to change the DNS nameservers with Namecheap.

I've used Hostgator for a number of years with no problems at all. I find them to be very responsive if I have a question, and their new CPanel is very easy to use. I also use GoDaddy to purchase domains, and have had no problems. If you don't want to be automatically charged for a renewal, you can just check the box to "manual." You'll be notified when your domain is coming up for renewal, so you won't miss the date.

Go Daddy + DreamHost = less stress. I've been with go daddy for years, dreamhost for months. The user interface in both are spectacular.

I've found Hostgator to be very reliable and responsive if I have any questions relating to domains or hosting and their new CPanel is very easy to use. As far as just purchasing domains go, I always use GoDaddy - very cheap and easy to manage! They do have an auto renewal system, but you can disable it within their control panel though!:-)

Use NameCheap for WhoIs protection that comes with their pricing.
Don't forget to look for coupons. Those are really useful. You can search it up under "Name Cheap Coupons"

If you plan to do email marketing a lot, then stay away from GoDaddy because they have a Spam policy and they will take down your website if you violate or even if you unintentionally violate their spam act policy. They can charge you over $299 to reinstate your account. So be sure that when you send emails, you're not sending it to an unknown list that you bought and imported, less they click the "spam" button or "report" you for spam.

I've used GoDaddy and NameCheap with no problems. I like NameCheap better because there's less control panel "features"-which means it's simple and easy.

It takes more clicks to change NameServers on GoDaddy as compared to NameCheap.

For me, I've tried HostGator, while I'm still with them, they've had one crash that lasted for 2 hours. It was fine and they did get back to me as soon as they could. I think I waited 30 minutes for a ticket to be answered. So that's good.

The only choice for domain names should be NameCheap.

GoDaddy and others may shut your domain down if they receive some spam complaints. Even if you hate spam some people still report your domain as spam. So stick with namecheap.

For hosting I've used dreamhost without any problems. You can host unlimited sites, even you can run web applications. They don't bother or measure cpu usage or anything.

There are some dreamhost coupons out there with wihch you can buy their hosting for $25 for the first year ($100 or $120 per year (can't remember) for the following years).

Domain names from Netfirms (only $6.99 per name with no crazy up sells like they do over at Go Daddy).

Hosting through Host Gator (awesome hosting)
