Market to me but don't lie to me

I just found an email in my inbox that said that someone got banned from the warrior fourm.

They gave me a whole story about this and everything, then said check it out here.

At the very bottom, they said it was all a dream.

A very effective but stupid trick to get me to go to the product that they are affiliates for. I immediately unsubscribed.

I will do the same to anyone who LIES to me.

Another affiliate sent it again, with a different headline..I opened it and the thread was about someone who dreamed about a banning.

fine, but don't lie to me in an email.

Also, again, you send me the very first email ever after I sign up for your newsletter and it is a damn ad. You didn't give me information I can use, you didn't try to solve my problem. You shoved a product from clickbank down my throat that if you read the warriors forum has gotten rave reviews for being ****! So why are you surprised that you got unsubscribed from me.

If you are trying to sell to me, please don't do two things, decieve me and LIE To Me! Otherwise, Adios!

  • Yikes, I'd unsubscribe too. That's not a very clever marketing tactic. Dreaming about being banned? That's just weird.
  • That's a horrible tactic.. and I've seen some pretty lame ones in my day.
Unsubscribe and move on to the next unsuspecting poor soul.
  • I'd unsubscribed as well.

    • I probably would unsubscribe too.. that's the Bait and Switch move, in one degree or another. They basically wasted both theirs and your time with that one.
      Should be Banned for that...lol

At the same time, hey what can you do? (I guess unsubscribe)...By Any Means Necessary!!???
  • I truly dislike when people do that. What I think most people fail to realize is that you make more money when you actually help people. Not when you try to lie and play tricks to get them to click on your links. I have unsubscribed from so many lists because all they want to do is sell, sell, sell and never provide any valuable information. That is the worst marketing tactic you could ever do.

    • yes, but the said thing is, this is a WSO that starts out by a warrior dreaming that he had been banned. He admits that it is a dream. I thought that was so stupid, I didn't even finish reading it, even though I had read a lot of his WSO's before.

The affiliates in question, put that under the link, by their signature. If I hadn't seen that I would have actually thought they were telling the truth.

Hopefully, they will do this to enough people so that when they have no more list, they will wake up and smell the coffee.

I wonder how many marketers have seen a depletion to their lists and JUST DON'T GET IT??!!
  • I occasionally have dreams where I have to send a PM to Paul Myers asking him why he banned me.

In my dream, I am trying to figure out how to reason with him to get my account reinstated. :p

When I wake up, I log into the forum just to be sure it really was a dream. Because in that "just waking up" state, I am not sure if it was a dream, or I learned about it before bed.

I swear I have dreamed it at least 5 times...

I guess it may be my subconscious telling me that maybe I should quit being an asshole to the people who really deserve it.

  • Very effective......yes, a very effective way to lose subscribers on your list!

    • My first thought was, "I ought to make that man's dream come true."

My second thought was, "And every affiliate who sent that email."

But I don't know who actually wrote the email, and the copy on the WSO is fine. And the premise - what happens if you're too dependent on a single channel for traffic - is one that everyone should take seriously.

The email could have been a lot better done. There's a slight twist that would have made it more effective, and avoided the hard feelings. Example:

      Subject: BANNED? Now what?!

Body: I sat there in a fog. I couldn't believe I had been banned from the Warrior Forum. I couldn't figure out what I'd done wrong. Wait... Was it...?

Oh, no. How could I have screwed that up so badly. And now what do I do? That's a huge chunk of my income. Just...

      *POOF* ... Gone.

I sat there confused for a few moments and finally, as the fog lifted, realized I had dozed off in my chair. It was just a bad dream. I was relieved for a few seconds, and then panic started to set in again. What would I do if it really happened?

I felt like I was sitting on the edge of a cliff.

For the next three days, I dug through WSOs, examined the sales processes, and looked for a "safety valve" to prevent disaster if I ever really was banned. As the idea formed, I started testing. And I realized this would not only work, but it would help me add a ton of people to my customer list and bring in a lot of extra cash even if I never had a problem...

Then end with the sales copy about the product.

Anyone think that email would have driven people here to complain about having been deceived?

      Don't out-clever yourselves, folks.

  • What better way to start a relationship with a new prospect than to decieve and lie to them?

And to top it off... They shove an affiliate link in there for good measure

  • Honesty isn't a common good anymore. These people probably never thought about karma

What a lame ass line for an email. Geeesh. It's a wonder everyone on their lists doesn't unsubscribe.

    • Yet another in the continuing series "The Numb and the Witless". A tragic tale about wannabe marketers who don't know what they are doing, and end up using good tactics very badly. Looking on, you just know that this will not end well...

Then there's the movie spinoff "Blood on the Information Superhighway", about inexperienced marketers aping their more experienced counterparts, going out of control, and ending up with their reputations in tatters, their mistakes splattered across the Internet...

  • I've received a ton of emails from marketers who are blatantly mean, offensive, curse left and right and basically dare you to unsubscribe. Funny thing is, I don't unsubscribe because (as a student of psychology) I'm curious as to what lengths people will go to in attempting to make a sale.

  • Yea I have a big issue with some of the rubbish out there these days. It seems integrity has gone right out the window when it comes to the internet marketing niche. Guys just seem out to make money and will do whatever it takes to do it.
  • Marketing is every interaction we have with all our customers all the time!

Blatant stuffing of products down peoples throats is not the way to go about making any sort of living, on or offline!

Remember people like to buy, and they like to buy form folks they like and trust!

    Build that rapport!!
  • Just unsubscribed a few more of those emails
  • Ethical marketing in the long run is so much more profitable and productive, to everyone involved. Deceit is nothing more than a wannabe easy button.
  • Getting attention in the internet marketing realm is becoming
more and more challenging and it's easy to be tempted to sell
your integrity to get more attention. But LYING is being lazy.

The easiest thing to do is lie to get attention. There are are
other creative ways to get noticed than tricking people.

Attention gotten by ill means leads to decreased means.
