DAMN! It's Hard To Explain To People That Your An Internet Marketer

Hey Guys,

I'm sure you all have a similar problem, but don't you find it difficult to explain to people what you actually do for a living?

Maybe it's worse over here in Australia but when I talk about what I do no one has a clue what I'm going on about.

This can get especially annoying when you meet a lot of new people and whenever you meet someone new the 2nd or 3rd question they ask you is: "So what do you do?" and when I reply I'm an Internet Marketer they look at me as if I'm high or something.

It doesn't have a simple title to it as most other jobs do.

I'm a doctor, I'm a lawyer, I'm a garbage man, I'm a student etc.

I've just noticed it recently in conversations with people that the question what do you do is really just small talk but I have to spend 15 minutes explaining to them what that actually means and by the end of it they think im running some sort of Internet ponzi scam anyway lol.

I went to the post office the other day and was filling out a form and for occupation I put down Internet Marketer and then I had to sit there and explain to the guy behind the desk what that actually was.

I'm not complaining I just find it interesting that something so simple as "What do you do for a living?" can become so complicated when your an Internet Marketer.

I have an on-going joke with my offline friends about how they have no idea of what I actually do, they just know that somehow I make a lot of money on the Internet and since I'm 21 and my friends are all around that age they just naturally assume I must run a lot of porn sites lol

But anyway I just thought I would share this with other people who would probably go through the same thing and if you have any tips or call yourself something other than an Internet Marketer I would love to hear about it.

Cheers,
Tristan

Haha tell me about it. I told my father to stop telling people what I do at family social events we are both attending cos people always come over, sit down next to me and ask me to explain this website thingee I do. So I say internet marketing specialist strategist. They usually look bewildered or confused at this point and stop asking. I know how you feel!

I told 3 close friends just as I was becoming aware of this whole world all about how I was going to conquer the world. I quickly decided never again. Whether I was successful or not they just couldn't even grasp the concept. Amazing to me. Most people are dedicated to the small worlds they live in.

When answering that question I sometimes find that people think I'm doing something dodgy or underhanded coz you're selling stuff on the internet. I suppose we do operate in a space which many 'normal' people are not used to.

Thankfully (or painfully) at the moment my main source of income is not from the internet. I do have a day-job which provides cover for my online activities. Hope to change this throughout 2009

I had a similar problem explaining what search engine optimization is.

I settled for a term that wouldn't frighten off my prospective clients:

    Frederick Internet Advertising

    I've in Frederick Maryland
and sell web sites to small businesses in Frederick Maryland

if I stray from that moniker just a tiny bit, people's eyes glaze over and they wonder what's wrong with me that I don't just go get a *real* job like every other *normal person*

If your niche is not the people you see in line at the local Walmart you can probably describe your self as "the man behind the curtain in the Wizard of Oz"

I see my clients at the shopping mall, at Sams Club, at the local vetranarian...

The only people I need to really explain to are my parents: "What are you doing on your computer? You've been in there since this morning!"

I've told them that I'm doing Internet Marketing..."Y'know, selling stuff online". And they say "well OK, just do well in school so you can get a job."

It's funny how they listen but they don't hear.

As for other people in my life, they assume that at my age (19), I don't do anything except study, work part-time, and hang out with friends. I don't study or hang out with friends nearly enough, but being a student is a great cover because everybody assumes its a very time consuming occupation. So for now, nobody needs to know

Tim Ferris doesn't like the question for two reasons:

    1) The people asking usually don't care.
    2) Its a stupid question that has been ingrained into us from society. Its stupid because people judge you on what you 'do' and if you answer anything other than the norm of "accountant" or "mananger" people will look at you funny.

Accordingly, he tells people that he is a drug dealer because it puts an end to any meaningless conversations while still accurately describing his lifestyle of no-work and lots of money.

This is a recurring question and everyone has different answers. I believe it simply stems from the fact that 'Internet Marketer' is a relatively new term, not known outside of its own area and, if you really consider it, is not that accurate.

If I had an offline business selling used cars and one of the main ways I got my business in was to advertise in the local paper, I wouldn't call myself a 'Newspaper Marketer', I'm a Used Car Dealer.

If I had a number of offline businesses, selling all kinds of stuff that weren't related, I'm not a serial marketer, I'm a business person with many interests, you might call me an entrepreneur.

If you're mainly an affiliate marketer, you advertise other people's products for a commission or flat fee, not unlike the 'conventional' advertising industry. Maybe you'd like to call yourself an Ad Man - you're in advertising.

If you sell your own stuff, then you can describe yourself as the seller of that product or service, or better still, tell them that you make peoples' lives easier, happier, more fulfilled by helping them control their weight, make money online, grow better tomatoes etc.

Internet Marketing is HOW you do your business, not WHAT you do.

In the end, it doesn't really matter. Don't lose sleep over it and just be comfortable with what you do. The friends and family that care about you might be willing for you to explain the details, but those that don't get it and refuse to... sod 'em!

This one is my favorite so far...and so true!

"Internet Marketing is HOW you do your business, not WHAT you do".

For me, since I have not arrived yet...I just say I'm a student of Affiliate Marketing. And they always say, huh?! Then I just chuckle and keep quiet unless they press on about it.

I think when people ask that (stupid) question, as one warrior put it, I think what they really want to know is how much money are you worth...

I'm personally looking forward to the day when people ask me that question so I can say I make a great living working online as long as I have my laptop and an Internet connection.

Tristan, count your lucky stars! I know, I know, you're were not complaining. And that's great. But my friends and family (and they do care about me, too) still think I'm dreaming. They think, as if I'm going to make a living working online. It bothers me sometimes, but then again, I cannot wait to rub their noses in it, really!

I guess once I'm making good money, I will have the creditability factor.

For now, they just keep saying, well Mirza, I sure hope it works out for you! (with that tone in their voice, you know, the one where they're thinking call the men with the little white coats)

      I could just scream...

      Ahh...go suck an egg!:p

Forget about strangers, my close relatives still don't get it. I had a conversation with a cousin who recently graduated from a business degree. It went like this:

"So what do you sell on your websites?"
"Well I don't sell any of my own products. I do affiliate marketing."
          "What's that?"
"Well you've heard of Clickbank right?"
          "No"

Needless to say the conversation got a lot worse when it came to CPA

"What? As in Chartered Practicing Accountant?"

How can a business graduate have no idea what clickbank is? Of course this cousin will be lucky to earn $50K p/a in the next 5 years, whilst I'll be earning that a month.

Yeh I have used entrepreneur before but that usually leads to follow up questions of what I ACTUALLY do.

Ive also said online advertising and make websites.

It's not that big of a deal but it is something that happens to come up a fair bit.

Ive also said i'm just a student since I'm young and if I get a follow up questions I just say i'm studying IT.

I think the confusion is due to the term Internet Marketer, think about it:

It sounds like you're "Marketing the internet"...doesn't it?

What you mean is, you run an online business that sells "X".
Or, my favourite is..."I own my own online marketing company".

    Simple. Move on!

    P.S

My point is, Internet Marketing is not a business and Internet Marketer is not
a true description of your occupation. In reality, Internet Marketing is a method
to create business for yourself and you're not an Internet Marketer, you are a
business owner that markets their business online.

    See the difference?

It's almost like a direct response copywriter saying he's a writer and a postman. Sure,
he writes, and he uses the postal service...but he's a copywriter when all is said and
    done.

Yeah, so true...I have started noticing it more and more very recently.

But I find it so fun, I 'm actually watching for people's reaction...and I get everything from blank stares to interested looks or worried eyes (especially from adults and parents)

It's true that many people believe that working on the internet means you're either a spammer or a porn seller, and more often than not both

However, my friends seem to understand what I do (I have started telling them about 1 year ago so it's becoming easier for them to grasp the concept lol) and many are actually really interested in helping me out...everything is fine!

What I love to do is, while at parties, give different answers to different people...so at the end of the night, some think I'm a drug dealer (thanks Tim Ferriss for this one!), others a professional porn star or a published author and professional speaker
By the time they get together they all know I'm a professional LIAR

Anyway, on a more serious note, I think many Internet Marketers let these type of reactions get under their skins and annoy them. It was a big problem for me at the begining, especially with my parents , but now that I understand better the big picture of IM, I don't let it get to me...

I think it comes down to not needing other peoples approval, loving and understanding what you do.
Let's not forget that every time you talk to people is an opportunity to promote your business...so while I sometimes have fun with people, I try to get the word out there. If you're young and go out a lot (like I tend to do these times) it's a HUGE opportunity: the word can spread out quite rapidly, especially if your stuff is worthy of some word of mouth (and if you're directly selling to college students or a young target market, it's even better!)

So, guys, please stop letting it annoy you and start selling!...and have some Fun too

      Have a great day

    Tristan,

This is something that I cover in one of my eBooks for "newbies". I advise them to basically NOT tell their friends or family about their new endeavors with IM and to only tell their spouse when you are prepared to take an onslaught of questions and concerns from all of your loved ones.

I don't recommend lying of course, but your loved ones simply are trying to protect you from scams and they don't know what they don't know right? So...long story short, I recommend telling only your spouse at first and actually show them and explain thoroughly. If the spouse isn't "interested" in hearing or seeing it...I believe that you don't owe them an explanation.

I told my wife and she wasn't "interested" but suddenly became interested when I started making some money. She was supportive though all along. She just didn't want to hear about it.

So I agree, it IS hard to explain to people what we do. They have to see it and get a good explanation or they'll never "get it". Good post Tristan...

    Sincerely,

    Craig Raphael

Most of the time, when people ask what you do, they don't really care. It's like when you run into someone and they say, "Hi. How are you?" They don't care. They don't want to hear a rundown of all of your recent aches and pains. They just want to hear, "Fine. And you?"

If the person asking is someone whose opinion you value, someone you'd like to get to know, someone you think is interesting, then I'd give them one of the great options already mentioned here, like saying you're in Internet marketing. Or prepare a little bit more detailed elevator speech and share that.

But if it's someone of the "Hi. How are you?" persuasion and you don't really want to get into it or spend the next 30 minutes expaining, go with you're a coach, a consultant, an entrepreneur.

I've found it's often enough to say, "I work from home online."

As i'm a Chartered Accountant by trade i say:

'By profession i'm a CA but by trade i own my own online marketing company'

If they try and ask more i will happily oblige if they are a business owner who may need my services but will just brush over it most of the time and turn the questions back to their profession. If they just don't stop i simply hand them a business card.

Just as an added perspective, it's a GOOD thing they don't know what it means.

When it comes to IM, the less people understand it, the less competition you have...

That and marketing works better when people don't see HOW they're being 'sold something'.

Even my brothers don't understand what I do. They often introduce me and say I am "into" computers. Then of course the person asks me to troubleshoot their virus problem. While I have decent computer skills, I am NOT a computer tech.

I have started to describe myself recently as an Internet Entrepreneur and Speaker rather than the old ways I used to introduce myself.

This sometimes lets me off the hook for people looking for free Internet coaching. I can just tell them to have whatever organization they are members of contact me if they would like me to come to speak to their group. That way I can see many people at a time, earn my speaking fee and make my products available at the end.

However once I do take the plunge full-time i'll just tell them i'm a Web Designer. If they ask what company I work for i'll let them know I work for myself.

If they keep badgering me i'll just tell them i'm an online underwear model...that will probably get them to divert the convo.

When people ask me...I tell them that I run an online cult worshipping a supreme being everyone knows about.

What they don't know is that my 'cult' is my mailing list.
And the 'supreme being' is the almighty dollar.

They worship it by always wanting to learn more about 'making' it, and being rich.
The 'collection plate' is the affiliate links I drive them to. They can either put money in or not.

I'm 'self employed' with an off-line business, so I have an office downtown, not in my home. that makes it a bit easier to hide in IM land while being in plain view and looking like I'm gainfully employed.

I tell people that I do a lot of my work with current customers on the internet. I've also said that I do online research, or that I do freelance work for others in my field. Well, technically, all of it's true. I wish that I had the tech skills to say web designer or software developer, though, because that doesn't really need a follow up answer. With my luck, I'd have someone asking me for the tech help & then I'd be stuck!

I found out a long time ago that no-one 'gets it' and it's a waste of time to try to justify your existence to someone who's looking at you through a sneer.

When I tell them I'm an internet marketer, they'll say, "Oh, so you're running a computer shop" or "Oh, so you're selling computers."

Since they don't understand "internet marketer" anyway, I sometimes make the title more mysterious, like "Online Traffic Strategist."

And after all explanation, they still can't get it. So I'll just say, "I'm a copywriter." Then they'll say, "Oh, so you're doing work with patents and trademarks (copyrighting)."

    Never mind.

Wow Tristan. Do I ever hear you on this one!

I have told my family about Internet Marketing and because I have made no real money from it, they get on my case about getting a real job.

I DO have what they call a "REAL JOB" right now and do this in my spare time. I work cooking in camps. Working 3 weeks on the job and then one week home. During that one week home I try to do as much with my IM business as I possibly can, working on it from the time I wake up around 7am until midnight with FEW breaks. Still having troubles making it work but that is another thread.

Anyway, over the Christmas holidays I got into an argument with my sister about it and I literally had to tell her to back off. Then when I was talking with my buddy yesterday the same thing! I told him to back off and drop the subject. They just don't see the big picture. Maybe if I just started bringing in 2000 to 5000 per month they will all just shut up and leave me alone!

One thing I can be greatful for is that my 73 year old mother understands better than anyone else. lol

    Dude,
This is the same story everywhere!!! You have explained the story of my life from word to word. It is so damn hard to make people realize that internet can be used for legitimate means of earning money that most of the time, I just tell them that I am a writer. This shuts them up to an extent. I get so angry that people still can't see internet as a part of our lives and treat it as a place where people just go to rob others or watch porn.

But I think slowly things will change.

I'm really fed up explaining it to people too. I've tried wording it so many different ways, most of which are met with blank stares, or, oh okay... My hairdresser who has known me a couple of years told me last week she still doesn't understand what I do. I explained it to her a few months ago, but oh well. I usually say I do Internet marketing selling digital products from web sites. Sounds simple enough to me, but since it's not one of those, I'm a nurse, I'm an accountant things, people get confused. My neighbors just think I'm some lazy woman that stays at home and tinkers on the computer. Puleaze.... if they knew the hours I put in this business! LOL.

I have a several answers dependent upon who is asking.

#1 I'm retired. This is semi-true although I think I actually work harder now than when I ran my full time off-line business.

#2 Me, "I'm a writer." "Oh, what kind?", is the typical response from the interrogator. Me, "Boring business stuff." That, usually accompanied with a pitying look, ends the conversation. [Thanks to Paul Myers for #2]

#3 On the rare occasion someone really, truly wishes to know--and I think they'll actually understand--I'll explain it fully.

#4 To the non-technical, non-computer literate, I'm-just-making-conversation, type questioners I say I sell computer software. [True, I do] Eyes glaze over and a "silent nerd alert" rings in their heads as they gracefully and very quickly retreat.

#5 If all else fails or doesn't seem appropriate I tell them I sell Amway. Runs 'em off in droves.

If it really bothers you just tell people you run a business or that you're an entrepreneur. If they ask for details just say you provide training programs ... like training for online marketing, whatever it is you're doing.

I guess I don't feel like your an internet marketer unless you work for a company and your title is 'internet marketer' like if you work for mercedes and promote their website or something.

If you're doing this on your own for your own company then you are a business owner and you do a lot more than internet marketing ... unless you have employees you're running your business, looking at financials, keeping things running, dealing with technical aspects, etc...

    Cheers,
    Tristan

Maybe it's just me, but I've actually never had a problem trying to get people to understand what I do. Here is what a typical conversation looks like when I get asked what I do:

Person A: "So, what do you do for a living?"
Me: "I work from home doing Affiliate Marketing."
Person A: "Oh really? What's that?"
Me: "It's where I send traffic to a merchants website, and I get a percentage of the sale if they buy something."

At this point the conversation can shift depending on if the person needs more clarification or not. But for the most part they understand, and they go on to talk about something else, or ask more details about how I do it. A lot of times it will end like this:

Person A: "Wow, and you can make decent money doing that?"
Me: "I make more now doing this than when I worked at a day job."

At this point I'm usually smiling, and they seemed to be impressed. I've even had an offer at one point where the guy wanted to hire me as an affiliate for his new website he was building. I told him I'd think about it as I had enough on my plate at the time

As I got more knowledgeable about what I was doing, explaining it clearly and concisely to other people became more and more easy to do. If people are having a hard time understanding what you do, maybe you need to look at how you're explaining yourself.

When someone asks me what I do for a living, I just say, "Mind your own business", and hand them my business card. My business card says "How to Mind Your Own Business", a short blurb about my services, and phone and website. It's all in good fun, breaks the ice, and I get a lot of leads that way. It seems many of you may be turning away business that could be profitable. Everyone is either a prospect, or in a position to know of someone that could be a prospect. Such a waste not to tap those offline resources.

Don't worry about it. Nowadays there are many jobs that are not the traditional jobs of the past e.g. doctor, teacher, nurse, fireman etc. It's the way of the world. Use the opportunity to educate people and you never know it may also be an opportunity to get them involved if you are in that type of Internet Marketing. Good Luck and enjoy!

I can understand how it might be difficult to explain to an uneducated Joe Beerbelly. (I've worked as a billing supervisor in a call center and have been constantly amazed at the lack of intelligence in so many people. I had to constantly remind myself "These are the bottom 20% of our customers.... These are the bottom 20% of our customers...." It's the old 80/20 rule, but very difficult to deal with when you're dealing with ONLY those 20% all day, every day. Grrr!)

But overall, I agree with Paul Uhl. If you can't explain it in simple terms to the average (intelligent) person, then how will you get offline business? To me, a business owner is a reasonably intelligent person. (After all, they had enough intelligence and ambition to start a business, didn't they? It's not something your average Joe Beerbelly will do.) So it's up to us to find a way to explain it in simple, understandable terms.

Just say "marketing." Most people, business owner or not, understands "marketing." If you just briefly explain that you market products/services on the Internet, it might go over better. (Yes, I know "Internet marketer" means the same thing, but I wonder if "Internet marketer" doesn't sound more "techie" and intimidating?) Now, your average man on the street, like your co workers, might not understand, but business owners and college graduates should.

And nobody else really matters anyway...

    Cheers,
    Tristan
