A Typical Day In The Life Of A Newbie

Looking back to when I first started in IM I was wonderering what took me so long to crack the code. The scenario below is probably what my typical day would look like in the early years. If your typical days is anything like the one below stop what you are doing now, get of the Internet and go away and have a think. You are trying to build a business hold yourself accountable for your actions.

Today's the day your gonna make your mark. You have decided that you really need to put all those years of struggling and learning behind you. You have been doing this for over 2 years now the only trouble is.........Is this your typical day?

9.30am - Up a bit late this morning as I was working late into the early hours of the morning scanning ebay for bargains & playing poker. Switch the computer on whilst I make a cup of coffee and watch the news to see what's happening in the world.

10.15am - Make my second cup of coffee and sit down in front of the computer. I am really excited today, "This is the day I get my breakthrough and start earning some cash" Decide to start on my emails to see if I have any "You've got Funds" from paypal.

10.20am - No good news from paypal but I am on about 20 Guru's lists, surely one of them have sent me the answers to all my prayers. Then I see it in the subject heading " Click a few buttons and make $10,000 a month" Gotta check this out right away!

10.30am - I am on the sales page, it sure looks good there are loads of screenshots of his clickbank and paypal account. Mind you I am not daft I have been told they can be faked but look at all the testimonials from people making money with this. Anyhow if I buy it today it will only cost me $47 instead of the usual $97 so I am saving $50.

10.45am - Just been directed back to the members area from paypal having spent $247. But hey, they told me if I bought the upsells I would make money faster. Ok I need to go and make a cup of coffee then I can sit down and study this lot in comfort.

11.05am - Back at the computer a bit late as the wife wanted to talk to me ( doesn't she realise I am working hard providing for our future here) Anyhow I promised her I would go shopping after lunch.

11.10am - Decide I need to get the rest of the emails out of the way so I can concentrate on my new product so back into my emails I've still got loads to go through. See an email from my domain provider saying one of my 40 domains is going to expire and to renew it. What should I do? I decide to let it slide I abandoned that idea 11 months ago it'll never work.

11.45am - Finished with the emails, Got a bit distracted with a couple of them. One of them seemed a good deal from Groupon that I had a look at, I flagged a couple more that came from my Guru's that looked good and will check later and I joined someone's list because he was giving away a free squeeze page.

11.50am - Wife comes in to tell me she's making lunch, better check the members area later I'll go on facebook for a bit.

12.30am - Finished lunch, time to take the wife shopping I will be back in a bit.

3.00pm - Took longer than expected, when I got back decided to cut the grass whilst I had the time. Can't spend all day on the computer the wife will go mad.

3.05pm - Better check if any new emails have come in I might have made a sale from my blog. See an interesting WSO that leads me to the forum. OK, it's about list building and may come in handy with the squeeze page I got earlier. Sign up to the list and make the $7 purchase.

4.30pm - Where's the day gone. Got a bit lost on the forum for a minute checking the new posts and the new WSO's. Also see if anyone had replied to my own post for help making money online. Time to take a break and help the wife get dinner ready.

7.00pm - The wife has settled down in the front room, time to take a look at the new members area I signed up for and test out my new push button software.

7.05pm - Ever hopeful check my emails again. The guy I purchased the WSO from as sent me one saying that because I purchased his WSO I can get his greatest set of Video Squeeze pages at a special price of $27. Ok I know I shouldn't but I take a look at his sales page....looks good. It could come in handy with the list building product and I know sooner than later I need to start concentrating on list building (I have tried half heartedly in the past without much success) but that's because I didn't have the proper tools, I can't fail this time.

7.15pm - On the download page for the Video Squeeze pages there are some special offers and freebies. One if for a facebook fan page template that I know I need to get so I sign up for the list and download it.

7.30pm- Ok I am now in my new members area and start watching the videos. There are 4 videos in total that show you how to download and install the software and how to use it. Plus another 6 traffic videos and some bonus videos.

7.45pm - Downloaded the software and on my second video. This is about using the software to submit articles. I had that on my to do list so will come in handy all I need now is some good articles. Ok I have been around long enough now to know that I cant just submit plr articles and I need to rewrite them. It's been a long day and I can do that in the morning when I am fresh so I will leave that for now and come back tomorrow.

7.50pm- Just had a brainwave I remember the book on outsourcing I purchased the other day so off I go to fiverr to order some articles. Ordered 6 articles for $20 but they wont be ready until next week so I will put my new software on hold for now.

8.10pm- Go back to the members area and start looking at everything that is there. Start watching the videos on traffic. Pause the video and make a coffee for me and the wife.

8.20pm- Take the wife the coffee and start to tell her all about my new software and how much money I am gonna make. She doesn't seem that excited and she says in the nicest possible way " But love you have been trying for 2 years why is this any different"

8.30pm - Got a bit of a sulk on so back to the warrior forum for some inspiration. See a post that from a newbie asking what he is doing wrong. I've been on here for 2 years now so surely I am qualified to tell him what he needs to do.

I remember the best piece of advice I had. I tell him he needs to write out a plan of action and follow it. To be consistent in what he does and not to let things distract him from his goals. Not to jump from one product to another and also whatever niche he chooses to start building a list within that niche right away. Each day he should write down a list of jobs he needs to do and to be accountable for completing those tasks. Once he his earning money in a niche he can then just rinse and repeat in any niche he chooses.

9.00pm - Ok just come off the forum feeling good about myself for helping someone out. Going to call it a day now as I have had a long day and achieved a lot. I wonder what tomorrow will bring?

Good post. I feel that this is applicable to most Internet Marketers here. People here need to start realizing that there are NO get rich quick schemes - or everyone would be rich and the world wouldn't turn.

Wealth is exactly that - more money than many others. Not everyone can have it, by definition.

I run two successful and separate online businesses, ChinaStore (electronics retailer) and ClerkWorks (web design) and THEN I arrived on here to create extra income and support these sites during my free time.

"IMers" need to realize that you need a sustainable business model, and buying a domain and putting ads on it or putting out a weekly blog in some niche just won't work. It may have worked for a small minority, but I bet it isn't giving you any more money than a minimum wage job would give you.

Think up a business. Write a full business plan, with a marketing plan. DO MARKET RESEARCH. Put $10,000 to $100,000 into it, or take out a business loan or find an angel investor.
Stop with this get rich quick mentality, and soon you'll find that you're getting rich very quickly.

      Yes,
Real thing this must applicable to all internet marketers, they are like a fish which moves in sea from top to bottom and search food and we internet marketers daily searches for unique and new thing which no body else have.
I am really happy to read this post. Keep it up - SEM.

        Great post you got there.
We should set schedule for our daily task everyday especially in the IM business. It is like going to a typical day in an office wherein we have our scheduled task to perform and should be implemented within that day. Internet Marketing business should be treated as the same, since it requires people to follow what is the task for each day and if necessary, to finish what is given to individual personnel in the office.
I don't have a schedule like what you have, but will really try to make a schedule to maximize and use my time wisely for it.

It took me a couple of years to learn that but that's when things started to change

    Awesome post mate!

It is like the Adrian Mole of Internet Marketing.

You have hit the nail on the head though.

If everyone who had ideas carried them out there would be a lot of rich people - unfortunately 90% think about it and the other 10% focus and do it.

you cant believe how accurately you just described what i did yesterday.

one difference, i have been at this many years and i made a little money doing that routine. but it is very easy to get into a pattern of doing that stuff.

every night i write down 3 things that i must get done tomorrow. not big things like finish a product, just 3 simple things that will get me closer to my goals.

Anton, your post is both funny and sad...

Funny because of your self-deprecating humor, coupled with an experience that many will identify with.

Sad because those most in need of the lessons it contains will smile at the humor and go on repeating their own version of that day, much like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day...

I suppose my defining moment was when I read somewhere about holding yourself accountable for your actions.

In a normal job you are held accountable for your days schedule by your bosses and if you acted anything like set out in the post you would soon be out of a job.

The best thing that I ever did was to buy myself a really BIG thermal mug. It has saved me hours waiting fro the kettle to boil and leaving half drunk mugs all over the show!

Now I make one cup that lasts me the morn and another for the afternoon!

Checking the emails is saved for first thing in the morn and last thing before I shut down.

This thread makes me a little bit sad. I hate to try and steer people from their dreams but realistically, if you haven't made much income over the two years of full time IM, I think it might actually be best to possibly find a more guaranteed method in making money.

If you are already loaded and have absolutely no financial problems then internet marketing is actually fun to do. But, otherwise it might be smart to move on and save the money that you have left. I mean $250 in one day is a significant investment in my eyes. Just my 2 cents.

    Wish you the best!

And don't forget the obligatory rant on a forum the next day that you've been 'working' 12 hours a day and this whole IM thing is just one big scam.

Then an hour later logging back into facebook, watching a bit of porn, reading a newspaper, checking out the latest product sales letters and spending another $200 on the next bag of magic beans.

Then wake up, forget you've bought a $200 product the day before, log into facebook, complain on forums............................AD INFINITUM.

I have been reading this post and this has been similar to what I have been doing, without the wife part. I think a white board is a good idea and going to be getting one on ebay. Focus is the main key and pursuing tasks through out the day. If you do not have any tasks set you will just waste the day checking emails. I realise this now and on Monday Morning I am going to get this sorted once and for all and be successful in my business that I create.
