What is the difference between public & private domain registration

Please could someone explain what is the difference is between a public and private domain registration is? What are the benifits of going for a private registration?

    Private hides your personal details from general whois searches. It doesn't stop your details being released under copyright laws or anything, but it stopsregular traffic seeing your address and phone number for example.

    With a "public" registration, you permit all your contact information to be available to view if anyone does a WhoIs search on that domain. If you select "private" (this often involves a small fee), you contact information is hidden.
