A new list building strategy. My first attempt at thinking like a Marketer.

Hello Everyone,

So I'm a noob, and I just put up a thread about my first bit of success which surprised me by getting a lot of views and a lot of replies.

Okay so I'm putting together my second website, and this one is not designed to last long term. It is a review site for a product launch in October.

I want to give a bonus to people who purchase from my link to encourage them to buy from me.

Pretty standard so far, right?

Now, I'll only give away a bonus that I've created myself. Why? Because if the product is good, it makes me look awesome and builds my name as a brand.

Here's where it gets original...

What if I gave away my bonus to EVERYONE who buys the product, not just to people who buy the product from me?

Try to follow me here. If I publish on my site that anyone who buys product xxxx gets a bonus, it adds some credibility to the product because it must be good and I must really support it if I'm giving folks a bonus for buying it, even I didn't profit from their purchase.

The actual plan

So I tell people that once they've purchased product xxxx
  1. they'll have to opt-in to my bonus list.
  2. Once they've confirmed their subscription, they'll receive an email address to which they'll send their receipt.
  3. Most importantly I'll let everyone know that unless they actually send their receipt, they'll never be bothered by a single email from me, and they also won't receive the bonus.
Guess what I've just done... I've just built a list of BUYERS!

So what do you think? Please don't pull any punches.

Thanks,
Evan.

Sounds like a great idea! Be careful when it comes to emotions though because I've found that you can talk yourself into thinking it will work brilliantly, and when it is put into action, it fails.

Sort of like that cliche, "it works in theory". Not saying it won't work, just don't get too excited until it starts!

P.S. Is this for the iPhone?

    Hey Evan,

First off, this is a very doable concept. The thing is, you have to consider that the early part of your marketing funnel channels authority to the product owner and not to you personally.

    My point is:
You would need to build trust when you actually get subscribers in.

Also, make sure its a no-brainer for everyone who sees what you are offering. Im assuming the launch is a REALLY good product.

With everything is said and done, your biggest hurdle would be... Traffic. Once you get it, monetization would be an easier task.

    Hope this helps you out.

      Hi Reebdoog,

Guess what I've just done... I've just built a list of BUYERS!
No, you've built a list of people who are buyers of someone elses product, but in terms of their relationship with you, they are freebie-seekers.

So for example, whatever product you give them is the one that forms their relationship with you.

Their perception of you is framed by that product and also framed by the fact that you gave it to them for nothing.

Their perception of the person they bought off is framed by that product and the fact that they trusted them enough to hand over money before getting the product.

Those two perceptions are going to be different and that difference is important.

Once they've confirmed their subscription, they'll receive an email address to which they'll send their receipt.
There may be trust issues with this (when you get something for nothing, you have to question the motives of the giver and what they are getting out of it and whether you are being set up) plus there may also be legal privacy issues.

      Please don't pull any punches.
It's the only way I know.

Watch out here, this may also take away some credibility of your bonus material, you may think that you will gain some but if the bonus material ain't good enough, it may have the other impact.

    Hi

Depending on the product, if you contacted the author and let him know you were doing this he might send your offer to his list of buyers that bought it through other channels and are not aware of your bonus.

"Hey I just got an email from Joe Smith and he is offering a great bonus package he put together for people who bought my Product X.

The cool thing is, he'll give you the bonus no matter where you you purchased Product X!

So head over to his site and pick up your bonus [link]"

You get traffic and he gets a free "added value" bonus for his buyers list.

    Aren't you both swell guys?

As has been stated above- you would need a bang on product or bonus to gain trust.

Although this isn't a list of "buyers" for you, it is a list of people who have "actually pulled out the credit card and ordered a digital product online", which is a bit more than a freebie seeker, I think.

    Evan - well done!

You are one of the few to have done a bit of original thinking.

Now, make that a habit and who knows where it will end?

    Good luck to you.
