By mistake one time i left the broadcast page in my arp3 account and sent out a message that said: click here to unsubscribe, and it had my link...

I found out that "Put Subject Here" for a headline has a HUGE open rate.

try it but be sure and actually send them something... I think i lost about 350 subscribers from that mistake

I agree with the other posters. Perhaps you could re-title the thread "How to quickly get your list to disappear!" Then the suggestions in the thread would be a great learning experience for new email marketers.

Gotta say though, Matt, your present title could go in a "How to write effective email subject lines" thread - it's getting people to read this thread!

Oh my ... don't you love some of those subject lines?

One of my ALL TIME favorites is ...

      "Personal message for {firstname} ..."

I guess if my firstname was {firstname} I would be REALLY interested in opening it ... otherwise ... DELETE!

I guess we kind of have the message here that what we need to do is setup the header so that there is a reason for someone to click - I once sent out an email to a list that said "Really Important Information" But that does not really hook the reader.

I think Yanik Silver has an old ebook called Million Dollar Emails where he talked a lot about this....have to look that book up again.

      Hi Matt,

Want a quick email tip to make your list respond?

      "You've got funds".
Yep, and that headline is probably the one with the most reliable response - as has already been mentioned.

      Hi Mike,

Gotta say though, Matt, your present title could go in a "How to write effective email subject lines" thread - it's getting people to read this thread!
Yep, but the thread has the same effect as the email. It gets a response, but not one that's beneficial to the OP. You go to all that effort to click and open the thread, but only leave with disappointment.

It's not about just getting any response, it's about getting the right type of response. And if someone uses that headline in an email, they demonstrate that they are lacking the ability to get the right type of response. Not a good show if you run an email list that purports to help others learn about successful IM.

Don't let yourself get caught in that trap.

"A response is a response" can kill your business.

Let's look at two possible responses to that subject line:

Response 1: Your reader gets irritated and unsubscribes.

Response 2: Your reader takes the desired action.

This sort of subject line will definitely get their attention. But from there, my bet is that they are either going to simply delete the email or go with Response 1. Very few are going to go for Response 2.

You won't want just any old response. You want the RIGHT response. You want them to take action that helps your goal.

Too many people going with Response 1 and before long you won't have a list to mail to.

I wouldn't get cute with subscribers about something
as serious as money normally. Serious people will stop
    taking you seriously.

With safelists and other junk marketing methods perhaps
this would be a good strategy since you actually have no
relationship with the subscriber other than permission
    to spam.

This past weekend, there was a thread about Burger King offering free whoppers to anyone who could prove (via a widget they supplied) that they terminated 10 friends in Facebook.

I think it'd be kinda funny to see someone develop an email campaign similar to that - "A free Whatever to anyone that unsubscribes from 'your competitor's' email list"

Food for thought - (pun intended)

      Hi Jglover,
Perry has a pretty good video on this topic.... Id post a link, but i am one post shy of being able to do that, so guess what? you get another post in just a second.
I just watched the first part of it, but the site then decided to load something further down the page, and it refreshed and sent the video back to the start. If you try and move the slider to advance, it doesn't work. And there's no fast forward. hrrrmphh.

Anyway, the bit I saw was discussing using Digg to find headlines that work. The one example I saw was 'killed for not sharing karaoke mike'.

I don't know if the video goes on to discuss using 'you've got funds' (reasons why above) as a title, but if not, it's worth pointing out that a 'you've got funds' title is a special case. Why?

Because it's more than likely only going to be sent to internet marketers, in order to replicate a sale email or an affiliate sale email from a vendor.

And in that case, many of them will be upset that it's a trick, and to add insult to injury, if the email then goes on to try and sell....

Whereas, I see it as a different kettle if one where to take the karaoke headline and use it, then concoct a story that relates the headline to the topic of the regular newsletter, then to a pitch. As long as it's done in a clever, professional way - great idea.

One of my marketing buddies (who's pretty well known) tried such a subject line and banked in 4 figures in one day from his list.

Shows that what people say and what they do is very different, don't you think?

It's all in how you word the email after using such an audacious subject line.

      1) Why are you so sure that she/he really got what you claim? I'm not saying that it's impossible, I'm just asking you why are you so sure that is real?

      2) Misleading customers is against FTC and other countries advertising rules. If you break the rules and laws, at least go for something bigger so that to worth the risk. Rob a bank!

      1) Don't be so sure that the subscribers will go that far (reading more than the misleading subject line)!

      2) Here's what happened to me (not stories other people told me )

About one year ago, one of my repeated customers asked me to send a solo ad that had the subject line "Notification of Payment Received"

I accepted to send that solo ad because that guy was a repeated customer and that solo ad started something like this: "Are you not sick of misleading solo ads having the subject line Notification of Payment Received?".

Result: total failure for the customer and ... a lot of unsubscriptions from my subscribers who didn't actually read the solo ad but only the subject line.

I never called anyone a loser, you used that word not me.
I was talking about the tactic described by the guy who opened this thread.
I just think junky-type emails are not going to yield a high conversion rate, if your defending that method as a good method of internet marketing, well, good luck to you.
Of course opt in listbuilding is another matter and is highly targetted.
I can see the confusion must have come from the fact I used the term "Email marketing, rather than "junk email marketing"

I think I learned this from Frank Kern (so I think credit goes out to him) but if you title your email "Bad news..." it GETS OPENED. So if you can mold your offer or whatever it is your email is trying to accomplish around "bad news" then you're going to make quite a bit of money off it.

The "bad news" angle I usually take it to limit supply. It's bad news because there are only XYZ number of spots available. Limiting supply increases impulse buys, etc.

Anyway, I've used this angle in non-internet marketing related niches and it works amazingly.

      "You've got funds".

      "order confirmation"

      "Your cheque is still waiting"

or any email that suggests I'm already an "affiliate..."

      gets me unsubscribed.

When these messages started coming in a short while ago, they were easy to just delete and move on. I never looked to see whether I was a subscriber. But when marketers who "seemed" to be legit started doing it - it finally triggered a more direct response - I unsubscribed. And these were lists I'd been on for awhile. Why they would suddenly take this tack is beyond me. It's sheer deception.

Of course, there's always the stupid, assinine first sentence inside, "I thought that would make you open this email" or something similar. Well, duh! Lesson or no. I'm not ready to be fooled by honest marketers any more than I am with spammers.

Another one that is really irritating is the multiple emails that come from big-name marketers (gurus, if you like) all promoting the same freakin' product launch. The latest for n blueprint triggered an influx of around 15 emails all with the same subject. I'm tempted to unsubscribe, but since they are knowledgeable people, I might stick around a little while longer. But tolerance is wearing thin, since most of their emails no longer offer anything of value - just promotions.
