What if you had 20K to invest?

What if you had 20K to invest - what would you do?

I have been looking to buy sites at flippa. Another thing is that I just don't have time and energy to start (and invest in) something on my own.

What would you do if you were me?

thanks

If you have the cash up front. You can outsource article writers to write articles for a website. Then outsource web builders to build you attractive web pages.

Put the articles on the web pages, then add google adsense.

I wonder why you wouldn't do that for yourself all day? Really? I am not trying to be rude or anything. But I see these claims all the time and always wonder if you really think it will work then instead of doing it for other people why you wouldn't do that for yourself? In few months you will have bunch of websites making automated money.

I was just joking around. I wouldn't actually take your money when there are a thousand sites on flippa already made. I don't really do that kind of thing, I usually outsource my site creation. I focus more on product creation. You have a good point though, there are a lot of people on here who say that who probably can't deliver or they would already be doing it themselves. Good luck with whatever you find!

    I would suggest the following.

    - study the market

    - Find what product the market need

    - Create an original product (Hire a company or programmer team).

    - Create a huge part of that budget for SEO and advertising.

I agree with the above... find something that people need and create products around it. Outsource if you have money to invest or don't know how to do it yourself.

With those products you can then start building a list of buyers, which in the long run is where the money is...

    WOW - $20k where would I start?

If your planning on going down the domaining route (aka buying and selling sites)...

Then YES, the process of buying, then refurbishing existing sites is the way to go.

Find sites that are converting and poorly monetized - use your savvy internet marketing judgement - to decide how you can increase the traffic and conversions - design, SEO, content, ect!

Implement the changes increase the earnings and FLIP!

...and, YES - this is what I do and have been doing!

All the best - splashing that cash!

    Colin

P.S - but by no means is this necessarily the fastest mode of ROI - IMO!

I'll probably catch some flack for this but whatever... if I had $20k to invest... I would invest it in real estate. Yeah, go figure.

    But hear me out...

First of all, you don't NEED $20k to be successful online so why throw it at the wall and hope it sticks. I know this isn't a real estate forum so I'll make it quick...

Real estate is one of the few (if not the only) places that has shown a gain over a ten year period of time for the last... well, as far as I can recall!

I would probably take a few thousand of that, pay a few programmers to write me an awesome piece of software that I can sell forever but the rest I would take elsewhere.

Just my opinion (which you asked for :-))

I looked into realestate, but this is what I am looking at. I can buy a nice website for around 20K and make about 1000/month. I cannot buy a realestate property for 20K and still make 1000/month. ROI is better here.

Yes the ROI is much better on the internet, but the risk can also be higher.

4 years ago I bought a site for 10k and put in 3k more... and got very little out of it for the 1st 6 months (about 2k in income total) THEN it made about 30k the following 6 months and now makes about 20k a year in income.

It was a very thin line between a loss and a huge gain.

Oh and if I had 20k to invest, I would invest it in making software to resell forever.

No, you can't buy a 20k property and net 1k a month... but you can leverage that 20k into a much larger property and net 1k a month.

You have an interest in flipping sites. Many people make a good living flipping sites and if you take the time to learn, you can be successful. Think of it as an opportunity to go back to (virtual) school, learn as much as you can and be prepared to make some mistakes. Hopefully your mistakes will not be too costly, but you will learn from them.

I wish you the best. - Lori
Many people make an EXTREMELY good living owning multi-family apartment buildings that provide them with a passive monthly cash flow each and every month without having to lift a finger after the deal is closed. I just don't think flipping sites is a good business. If you decide to take a day off, you make no money.

Not true... properties are sold EVERY DAY for $0... real, cash-flowing properties with owners that just want to retire. It's called owner financing. With $20k, you have MANY choices.

Don't limit yourself based on what you think you know. Invest in a real business, a business that runs with or without you. And yes, there are REAL online businesses.

I have no doubt there are people making a good living owning real property. If the numbers work, hiring a professional property management company, concessions made to compensate for vacancy factors, etc., it very well could be a lucrative business. Better have some cushion for those vacancy allowances, loan costs, etc. and an exit strategy.

I posted that no way would I invest in real estate. And I have been a real estate investor for more than 15 years. I have a pessimistic outlook on the future of the housing market and it is my opinion that values will decline. If I were looking to invest, I would want the security of an appreciation rate that was similar to the market a decade ago and I don't see that happening in the next 5+ years.

Properties are sold for $0? Owner financing usually requires a substantial downpayment. In addition, interest rates are usually higher than a formal lending institution, and that's assuming a formal lending institution would lend money.

Any investment or business venture has its risks. A prudent business person knows the risks and takes them into consideration before embarking on any new business.

I like a big product launch.

Others have touched on this. And you can farm out all of the work and sit back and manage, which is oh so sweet.

    1. Get research done (pick something you like so you intuitively know what the hell is going on in the mind of the market)

    2. Get a product created (video, guides, etc.)

    3. Have a sick launch (part 1). Partner with or hire a good copywriter, launch manager, jv broker, etc...

    4. Have a sick launch (part 2). Kick off with a blast and build a huge buyers list with whom you maintain a good relationship and continue to profit from.

I think one could profit off 20k, or even less, this way if they knew (and worked with) ppl who knew what they were doing.

I would buy 3-4 adsense websites on flippa making over $500 month for less then 10K. Then see if you like that approach and keep doing that. There are lots of adsense sites on flippa making over $200 a month. As I am looking to buy to.

If I had $20K, I would use about $1500 to get the domains I am interested in and at least one more software application. The rest I would live on while I built up my IM career to the point of being the only career I needed. I am well versed in the technical aspects of building websites, with or without WordPress, and would build my own, instead of buying pre-built sites.

I would invest the money in property or put it in a bond or check out buying up some gold and silver at the minute. I know this is NOT investing it online but these threads always throw me.

Each to their own but I have NEVER invested $20,000 online and made A LOT more so more profit.

Albeit I did the work myself and built it up overtime and in my experience there is no quick solution where you can invest $20,000 and get a guaranteed return.

If I HAD to invest it online I would go into product creation, but would not just invest $20,000 for a product that I had no idea would sell.

I would do my sums, invest as little as possible and aim for the biggest return.

If I had $20,000, I would invest them in producing some very good youtube videos to promote products.

I would also invest them in banner ads on highly targetted sites with good traffic.

Ensure that whatever product you are promoting has a high conversion rate.

By the time used spent $10,000, you should be raking in lots of cash.

Not stuff like Flippa, banners, YouTube videos, etc., which for me, seem to work only for the moment.

I think the main problem here is asking strangers how THEY would invest 20k.

        Who are you?

        What are your interests?

What have you done in the past?

        What are your dreams?

What do YOU think you should do with the money?

What do your close friends and family say you are good at?

Not being harsh, just not sure what you expect to find?

"Invest 20K here and you will make $xxxxxx" is not likely to happen!

What I would do if you REALLY don't know is pop down to YOUR local bank and INVEST the money into a financial advisor or consultant and pick their brains.

They will find out more about YOU and give you a better idea of what to do.

        Just my 2 pence.

        All the best,

To me, this is a brain storming session. As I listen (or read) to all these people, I am making my own plans and trying to come up with strategies. I am trying to see pros and cons of each idea that is being given here.

It is like, sitting with several of your friends and talking to them and see if something comes out of it.

I would just hire people to build my sites and just spend my time finding new niches and doing SEO. Having money speeds up the process by far for whatever way you are trying to make money on the internet.

You could buy a huge email like and a site related to a niche you want to be in and then hire someone to write an ebook for you and then release the ebook and you already have people to buy it.

There is so much you can do. You can buy adsense sites that are doing well but that you think you can make better and then start making money from that.

I'd be careful on Flippa, I've seen some sellers try to game buyers there. That being said, being a semi-busted site there and optimizing it yourself is what I did. I did not spend 20k or even close to it. Still, it's been a lot of fun and the hard work is slowly paying off!

To be perfectly honest I would probably take about $800, someone Else's product (that I support) and mail it to someone Else's list. Take the profits from that and do it all over again next week/month depending on how much I wanted to make. Depending on the product it might very well be a $3,500+ ROI.

Hire a team of outsourcers and let them SEO a whole bunch of web sites, this includes some of my own sites but also new sites and some which got acquired on forums/flippa cheap. There would still be enough money left to look around on flippa and buy a bunch of sites with potential - they would also work on those sites.

in my opinion,u must create a gud product and market it at 5k and then add the listing on clickbank and provide bonuses to affiliates and make some gud cash....this will work as adam hortwitz done so and sold local mobile monopoly making $2.3 million and he is just 19 now...so think upon it....u can take help of some marketers for product creation....

Well if ya dont have the time, it might be wroth it to just "BUY" an income, like you can in Flippa, just make sure you are well educated about your decision before you fork over the cash. Get a few second opinions before you make your final decision.

I would personally go on a massive media buying campaign and maybe even some solo ads and drive enormous amounts of traffic to a free offer, with a sales page on the backend.

Build a big list this way and make a killing. Win-Win

No way would I invest in real estate. Not in the US. Property values will continue to decline and when the commercial market takes a hit, loans adjust, it will get worse.

        Lots of good ideas here.

There is nothing wrong with starting with an inexpensive site first. Get your feet wet so to speak.

I like Michael's idea. It is a good idea to spend some money to make more money. A consultation with a successful IMer would be well worth the money.

It is important to do something you like. How many of us worked (or work) at jobs we hated and dreaded getting up the next day? I would guess the majority of people in this country are not happy, and worse, broke and unhappy. And with news coming out today poverty levels at their worst in 50 years. Ugh. Working your butt off at that 9-5, and for what? A gold watch at retirement with no benefits, no social security, no healthcare. No thanks.

Life is too short to do something you don't enjoy doing. Take your money and turn it into not only a profitable venture, but one that is rewarding and makes you happy.

      Ditto.

But not really. See, I'd find a really good shovel (such as a Forex product that had a high commission payout) and then proceed to market that shovel (Forex course or tool) using paid advertising methods to the gold diggers who are daytrading and/or otherwise into Forex.

The commissions on some of those Forex products are really high . . .

And that probably wouldn't take anywhere near the full $20k. Probably wouldn't even take half.

I know you won't listen, but, you need someone to manage and form your outsourcing for you so that you can do nothing but see results. though, this means you have to give up control because noone likes being micromanaged once assigned a job to do. You cant have it both ways.

With all due respect - you start off the thread with:

"Another thing is that I just don't have time and energy to start (and invest in) something on my own."

People are dropping suggestions and you are replying with one sentence replies.

I am not knocking you truly I am trying to help.

However if you want REAL feedback and you are talking about $20,000 to invest how about YOU tell US what you CAN do.

Your interests, what you have done in the past, what you are THINKING about doing with the money.

Starting a thread saying I have 20K to invest but don't have the time or energy to start is...well no-one can help you there.

Give us a bit more information man!

If I were starting over and wanted to short-cut about 10 years business building experience...and had 20K to invest in internet marketing....

      I would:
Make a list of what I'm really good at, what intrigues me, my natural gifts, who I would like to work with, what my perfect day would be, how much money I want to make now and the next five years, my resources, assets, liabilities, time limitations, connections...

      Hold on to 10k.

Get one of the following on the phone or in person for an intensive 2 hour consultation:

      Chet Holmes
      Rich Schefren
      Jay Abraham

There are others whom could help quite a bit, but if you want someone to tell you how to turn 10k into x millions, these guys have done it countless times for many people.

They could and there are a few valid entrepreneur courses out there but I'm not sure I would be taking business advice from a professor who gets paid to teach.

That degree that they hand you when the course is over doesn't magically turn into a business. Action and implementation is required.

I'm not saying college is bad... for some people it's necessary, I just feel business owners will gain more by learning from other business owners.

I know plenty of folks who are still making a lot of money selling drop shipped products on eBay.

With 20K to invest, I think I would dabble in selling products there - especially with the holidays coming up.

I wouldn't put ALL my invest capital there, but I would allot some of that cash to seeing if I could make eBay listings profitable.

You say you've already got some mobile aps. Put some money into promoting those, maybe pay a programmer to create upsell versions of those. Create videos or teaser versions, anything easy & fun or really useful.

With that kind of funding you could also hire a programmer & create a penny auction site then use part of the money for promotion. Or hire out copywriters to create really good content for a paid membership site. Build either option with the intent of creating an active passionate user base.

Whatever route you go, I'd look for something that's intended to be a long term income stream rather with a little maintenance.

I will assume that you want to invest your money in creating an online business.

I would seriously consider buying / mailing co-registration lists. This is a business that takes money to make money, but the return on investment is HUGE! Once you make back your initial investment on a given list, then all the traffic you generate from it is free, less your monthly costs of server(s)/IPs to send the lists.

Don't listen to anyone that tells you don't buy a list(s), because either that is what they have been told and believed it or they have done it and didn't know what the process was to do it profitably and lost money.

This is all I have been doing for the past 12 years and never lost a dime on any list I have ever purchased and I've probably bought $100K worth of lists.

The type of investment you do depends on what you want out of it. I am partnered with an investment fund and I am always looking for investments.

I look for the big score... minimal investment with the largest payout. You would think that means bigger risk, but it comes down to how you structure the deal.

For example, just invested $150k into a pre-paid debit card company, but the payout can easily be $50 million because of the crazy valuations these companies are getting.

But for smaller investments, just met with a company that has a patent on Apple products... its one of those ways to personalize your iPhone, etc... investment will only be $10k at a time and they need to hit certain numbers to get another $10k.

The investments are out there, really depends on what you want out of it. If you want to run the company yourself or if you want to run it with someone else, etc...

Either way, good luck... but there are always ways to make money even in a bad economy. All a bad economy does is make the distance between the rich and poor bigger and its harder for middle class to make more money.

The rich will always keep making money no matter what and take advantage of bad economies and the poor will always struggle to get by no matter what.

You don't need a lot of money though to do any investment, it's more in how you structure deals and what you can turn $1 into.

Im investing something like 10 to 30k euros for every new product I sell. (I started with 50x less, but more money speeds things up). Let me explain. Im selling physical products on local markets. I make a good sales page, buy the product and then advertise it on PPC networks etc.

    With that 20k you could:
    - Buy a decent quantity of interesting product. Preferably in health and beauty category. $5000

    - Get someone to write a nice copy and make a compelling sales page. $1000 should do for simple but good quality page. Or you can do that yourself, if you know how (there are tons of guides on copywriting and there are always cheap templates available).

    - Spend the rest of your money on online advertising. Not all in one go, but you could start with 200, 300 per day, carefully measure results and then increase budget as long as your ROI is positive.

It sounds like you want to develop a nice passive income stream by investing in established sites. I might suggest starting small with a site averaging around $50-$100/month for the last 6 months. You'll learn a ton on this smaller deal and be much better prepared to continue buying sites. I'd probably shoot for a portfolio of around 5-10 sites which means buying sites around the $2,000-$4,000 range.

You'll have 2 way income source from that. 1 You can sell links and offer blogpost memberships, 2. Use the network for your own sites to develop passive income.
