Impossible to fail in IM if you keep trying. Period.

That's absolutely FALSE. If you just "keep on trying" things that don't work(as many in IM do), you will fail indefinitely.

The key is to find a solid, actionable plan and give it a real shot. If that doesn't work, move onto another plan.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no point in being a damn fool about it.

Well, if you keep trying and don't learn from your mistakes, maybe not...

But if you play it smart, I feel like eventually everyone will find at least some success.

There are many reasons that people give up on IM, but I think the MAIN one is a lack of action.

People do not THINK what they are doing will make them money and there is always the lure an EASIER method. I think there is a general consensus that working online can make you rich overnight and that it is not a REAL business.

If you treat it like a REAL business then you will get better results.

A lot also is down to all the push button solutions that promise $xxxx in 10 minutes.

I have been working online for about 6 years and it has ALWAYS been taking action to grow my business that has worked for me.

    All the best,

    Chris

People are giving up because society is all about instant gratification. When the figure out the push button course they bought does not create money effortlessly they give up.

Agree with you 100%. People have the idea that they can get online and make a ton of money without putting in any work. Once they see it doesn't work that way they either give up all together or go look for another product in hopes of finding the "secret method" that will make them rich quick.

I have a public announcement. THERE ARE NO GET RICH QUICK SCHEMES THAT WORK...The only way you will make money online is if you put in the time and effort. PERIOD!!

In my opinion, internet marketing is THE best business model. - It takes a VERY little startup cost, and can potentially have HUGE benefits.

Not to mention, you are not bound by location, or time, as it is all internet based and you can outsource as much as you like.

    Cheers,

It's hardly the 'best' business model. Far from it. I won't even bother substantiating what I'm arguing here because this is pretty much fact, but take Web Design for example - exactly the same in every respect (ie not bound by location/time, all internet based, can outsource as much as you like) - except the profits are greater, it is easier to scale, and generally is a more formidable business model.

Actually, what the hell, I WILL substantiate what I said. It is absolutely NOT the 'best' business model - and if you don't believe me, go take your 'Internet Marketing' business model to ANY bank in the world and ask for a business loan. Present your 'best' business model to them, and watch them laugh at you.

It shows how little you know about this, and other, business models to make such a ridiculous claim like that one.

Perhaps you mean it is the 'best' business model for YOU, as it is laid back. But in terms of the real world, in terms of profits, in terms of return over investment (investment of time), in terms of scalability (often can be difficult or impossible in some sectors), it definitely is not even a 'good' business model.

People are in love with the model because of the following:
      a) 90% of Internet Marketers are unskilled and unqualified, so it is an easy business model to use, and an easy business to enter
(look how many new people register on the forums with 'MarketerJohn' or 'TrafficKingGuyPerson', yet are clearly new to the industry, and show this by asking newbie questions...)
      b) Internet Marketing requires little investment
      c) Internet Marketing can be done at one's own pace

If you never give up and you keep seeking out new knowledge on IM then you are bound to be successful eventually. It takes time like everything else.

I look at it this way, If I was in college, it would take me 4-6 years to get a degree in something that would probably make me $60-100k/year. I believe I will be making much more than 100k/year in 4-6 years

I think it's down to lots of things but two things spring to mind.

      1. They want an automated income, they want to lie on a beach and not have to worry as the cash rolls in - The problem is it takes a shed load of blood, sweat and tears to get there. No magic bullets.

      2. It's a business. Whether you like it or not, most businesses fail. This is a business and if you think this is some easy way to make cash from the get go, it's going to hurt.

There are bags of other reasons like lack of action, getting upset you don't earn cash in an instant and, as one guy I tried to mentor said "WHAT? I'm going to have to spend a month learning before I make cash???? No way!"

Yes way, go away and don't come back was my response. Incidentally he's still here months later with no idea how to get traffic let alone money in the bank.

      You said it all.

Internet marketing takes time and effort.

If you ask me, another name for IM is the school of hard knocks.

Unless you are prepared to apply yourself and be unperturbed about failure, then your hope of making it online is very high.

The more you apply yourself, the more you learn and with knowledge and further action comes income- whether in school or in IM

I also would disagree that people who gives up on the Internet Marketing business was because he/she doesn't have the sufficient knowledge and expertise. This is what an acquaintance in the IM world once told me to be a factor, but I don't really agree on this. Before a person becomes an expert on something, he/she has to start from the beginning of it. There are no shortcuts to being an expert or attain success. We all have to undergo the process of learning, either in a short span of time or the longer. We cannot really say that the only reason why people give up is the lack of knowledge and expertise, since there are a lot of factors that we have to consider.
First, we have to consider the person's determination and his/her motivation to do IM business, since I really believe that the IM business is not for everyone. If he/she will only "try" to make the IM business as his "instant money making sources", then I think that person has to think again. The will power of a person depends on how much does he/she really wants to learn and at the same time earn from the business that he/she is interested to do.
Second, I would say that it really takes some time to really learn and absorbs all the necessary information that the people need in order to fully familiarize the field that he/she wants to be. Being impatient is also a factor why people gives up on the business, since they have this in their mind that IM business is "instant money" for them, and are expecting results a day or after a month of work.
And most probably the common reasons why they give up is that they are only good at the start. Excitement is a factor why people are really determined to do something what they want, but consistency and frequency are not maintained and that when their impatience overwhelms them, they would just quit and most of them are "sour-grapping" what had happen to them in the IM world.

Keep a positive mind, always remember: In the IM business, this is not for everyone.

To be perfectly honest I don't think it's merely just Internet Marketing, those of us who are successful here know that success is a habit, formed by continually learning, pushing, failing and growing.

IM is not an easy ticket ride like many believe it is, but then again nothing worth having in life is. How many people do you know set goals to lose weight or get fit but don't want to put the time and effort in going to the gym and adjusting their nutrition and lifestyles?? Same with smoking, making money, becoming more confident etc.

We are of an age where the majority of people are very comfortable in their everyday lives, it's too easy to lie in because you don't want to get up and hit the gym, it's too convenient to catch up on TV than learn about how to drive traffic through PPC. Most people will never have the success they want, in any area of their lives, simply because they don't want it bad enough.

      Totally agree here!

Also I feel that people see and focus on the finish line only (making $xxxxxx per month) - because that is what is pushed in our faces all the time, rather than what really is required to get there. So people start with high hopes thinking doing a bit of everything will work. They spread themselves out thinly by learning and trying all the elements of IM (blog, SEO, PPC, viral, articles etc etc), the thinner they spread themselves, the more focus, momentum, and success they lose. And they end up saying it doesn't work, it's too hard etc. Where as each element has proven to be a successful element... if we stick to one and become the "guru" in it, we can have success.

A lot of people say it's information overload also... I disagree.... it's not a matter of "too much" information (we are constantly absorbing information via tv, radio, news, books, videos, advertisement, conversations with friends etc). It's a matter of too much DIFFERENT ANGLE information, so the person gets confused as to which one is better, so they keep changing paths, getting confused and feeling overwhelmed (blaming it on information overload).

      I could go on hahaha...

Last point... it's Internet Marketing... most people who jump onto this business have zero knowledge about marketing, so they have a lot to learn from day one, and it's a business, there are a lot of elements and systems to learn and manage for it to all work out.... most people have no idea about this when they start, and throw their hands up in the air after they realise it all takes time, effort and work to get there, rather than just plugging in and checking their bank account for all that money that surely came in automatically overnight.

      Anyway, they are my thoughts

Internet marketing isn't a business model; it's a medium in which you can do business. It takes hard work, and dedication - and that fact is always left off the colourful sale pages of products x-y-z.

        Why do people give up?

        - They think it's going to be way easier than it is
        - They spend a little money on traffic and decide they can't 'lose' anymore
        - They believe that if they work hard enough they will find success. Hard work is a big component, but SMART work is just as important. If you are failing over and over TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT. The 100th campaign you build the exact same way as the previous 99 probably isn't going to do any better.
        - Jumping around to much. PPC, PPV, FB, SEO, WSO's, etc, etc, etc. People jump around so much they really don't give themselves a chance to get good at anything. Pick one traffic source and one niche you know people are having success with and learn it inside and out.

I don't see it. I am being contacted every day by more and more people who are keen to move along in the IM business and not one of them has a clue what a shiny button is. They are all prepared to work and study hard and have no thoughts of quitting or that it will be easy nor are they looking for instant gratification. Internet Marketing takes someone who is a SELF starter and disciplined. We are in the age of immediate gratification and reward. The internet is like any other type of employment in that It takes hard work and determination to make it pay. You have to give a little every day to reap the rewards. Love the quote by WC Fields above, but I prefer to live by Walt Disney's life. He FAILED and went bankrupt more times than he chose to remember. However, he stood back up and started again and I think he would definite be one of this century's GREATS. I read a post earlier today which I believe could help someone be a SUCCESS with internet marketing. Aim high and add one to two zero's to your $ goal of where you want to be. Try it you will be truly surprised at your rewards.

It's not just about lack of action. There are many people who put in a ton of effort. The only problem is that they have either been misled, mis informed or just do not really know what they are doing and the reasons behind that action.

Education is the key. Not just knowing that something needs to be done, but also knowing WHY it needs to be done and how it helps your overall project.

I think people multi tasking is also a major problem leading to inefficiency. Take one task at a time and get it done well and completely. Only then move on to your next task. If there are simple tasks that you do not have the time to do outsource them, but only small jobs until you can trust the worker.

Yes looking at one program, not giving it a real go then something else comes along it looks quicker and better and money in an hour. I'm not doubting there may be programs out there like that(make money quickly) but there a lot of scams.
I think you have to have discipline and perseverance and just go for it and yes you learn more and quicker down the road, if you get great support - helps and definitely have fun with it.

I think a lot of people forget that marketing is only one part of a successful business. There are lots of people blogging and tweeting that don't really have anything to sell - they just think you create a website and magically money appears in your bank account.

    ii) i promote my site with free host site and not accepted by the ones that have main domain (for link exchange purposes);

There are a number of reasons people give up IM.

    Easy Riches
Just like any other industry, there will always be people chasing dreams, without the staying power to WORK to achieve it. When it doesn't fall into their lap straight away, they simply give up. Unfortunately for the newcomer, there are messages everywhere telling them they can be wealthy virtually overnight. Without a miracle, we know that isn't the case.

    Strange Terminology and New Jargon.

This industry is fuul of terms which have to be learned and understood. It seems as soon as you've 'mastered' on, there's another one to get to grips with. This can be very disparaging for newcomers.

    Information Overload.
In the pursuit of the ideal way to wealth, many (probably most) newcomers buy product after product, trying to find the one that works. Regrettably they end up with a pile of products they don't have time to research, an email inbox that's out of control and a dwindling bank balance. There's just too much false information in the IM industry, and too many false prophets after their money.

    Focus
We are constantly told that you need to select one thing and one method, and stick with it. Only then can you prove it works - or doesn't. You need to understand that by putting all your effort into one thing, and taking reference with helpful people in places such as The WF, you will eventually see a result and return. But not today, and maybe not even tomorrow.
It was almost a year to the day before I saw my first sale, but a month later that had multiplied nine fold.
I didn't have the Forum, and I had to make my own mistakes along the way. But I'm still here whether you like it or not.

Why we can't all start together with holding hand starting with our little knowledge,, What i mean by that,, just start with what already we know.. It can be some thing very simple..

Take Actions what all we know... Please don't give up friends...

I'm not entirely sure I understand what you mean here. There are people starting out al the time, and every day. The hand holding can be achieved by participating in places like the Forum, and applying the valuable information here, and by connecting with other people in a similar niche of market, maybe even just by blog commenting etc.

    Coaching and Mentoring

My best recommendation to any newbie who can afford it, is to find a trusted mentor or coaching course. They are out there.
By taking this one step, you can save yourself a fortune by not buying naff product after product; and considerable time avoiding many of the mistakes. You will still have to work, but you'll achieve results much much faster.
But the Catch 22 here is . . . who can you trust to recommend a trusted mentor?

Here's a tip for newbies (and us oldies too).
If you find a name or WSO (product) whcih you think you can trust in your business, Don't Take Anybody's Word For It - Even Mine.
Google is a tool for finding information, that's what the IM industry depends on. So research the name or product before you buy. A ggod place to check out IM products and even vendors/gurus, is IM Report Card. You can pick up some useful unbiased evaluations of IM products, without the worry of affiliate interests.

Now you're here just try to weather the storm, and focus, concentrate, learn and be prepared to work. Be one of the minority who have made a success of earning an independent income online, unreliant on others.

Give up, and you'll hate yourself. Stay and succeed, and your self esteem will skyrocket.

    To your Success

Wow there are some GOLD nuggets in this post. Quite uplifting to read through them all.

Here are my key take aways for anyone new to IM or business in general:

    1. Be prepared to work harder than you ever have before.

    2. Research a variety of methods. I know this goes against the grain but I feel the education you can get from WSO's is loads cheaper than most Uni courses and you need to learn from somewhere. Do due diligence on the WSO vendors though don't just buy random products.

    3. Form a business plan and write up a costs sheet. Just record what you are spending and this will help curb the habit that emerges from the research phase. Its truly amazing what seeing a rising total will do to your spending habits.

    4. EXECUTE on your plan. At this point you are standing at a cliff unsure of how deep the water really is. Your research has shown you that you will survive the fall but still you have yet to experience it. JUST JUMP IN!

    5. Track the IMO the three most important figures. Incoming Leads, Incoming Sales and Outgoing expenses. A simple spreadsheet will do. Note down at the end of each day and start finding the rhythm of your business.

    6. After you've seen some sales. Analyze why those people bought your product or service and the zero in on it.

    Hope that helps
    TC

Biggest issue for me was always that I was "overwhelmed", not really the taking action part!

You have PPC, SEO, PPV, Facebook, Twitter, Forum and hudnreds of other techniques to get money that can make your brain literally go "pop"

Success came when I decided to focus on one strategy (which is SEO). Thats It!

Impossible to fail at anything if you keep trying and learning.

99% of IM is mindset, if you don't believe you can do it you never will. You need to work out what you want, do you want to make $3000 a month or $100,000 a month. Then make a plan to get there and ignore all other information that comes your way about X opportunity etc.

Overwhelm is the single biggest problem and leads to analysis paralysis.

I would also recommend a mentor, find someone that has already achieved what you want and then COPY the crap out of what made them a success. Don't try and reinvent the wheel or work it all out for yourself that is a sure road to the poor house.

Here's a fresh perspective. Though this may not apply to everyone, I believe IM is like learning another language, and most people would find it "boring". Lets be honest here, those looking for a "get-rich-through-internet" are not techno geeks, and if they were, would have sufficient background knowledge and the drive. Hence, its simply not where most peoples' interest lies, and they are unable to focus their energy into learning all the concepts, let alone keep up with it.

I think the main problem is that in the beginning people don't know what to do. They don't understand everything and to explain everything at once is difficult to understand. When I explain the whole thing to my husband he is really puzzled . He doesn't get anything. Even if I explain stuff to my mom she really gets confused.

So this actually means that people take less action because of their lack of IM marketing knowledge.

I cannot speak for all but IMO people who give up before they actually start is due to the analysis paralysis stated by a previous poster. There are sooo many definitions to comprehend and by trying grasp the context of posters comments, with a whole new language to understand, one can lose focus on the objective on what they are trying to achieve. Worse still, perhaps not even be able to form one at all.

I have not seen this anywhere, I apologise if this is already exists, but a board on WF that shows different business models would be very useful. I am not suggesting people reveal the 'core secrets' of the functions they perform to stay one step ahead of the game, but an overview of the differing income streams so users can get a better feel for direction that suits their own skill sets or business objectives.

Some posters may argue this is not a business forum and this 'heresy' should not be posted here, the reality is that the function 99% of people serve by visiting WF is to gain an education or grasp/share a new concept for us to implement that helps us refine our business so please put the crosses away you were planning to burn me upon.

If you get a handle of differing models, implement one that is a realistic initial objective, put the blinkers on and stick with it to make it the best that you possibly can, you will stand a greater chance of success rather than diluting your efforts over multiple weaker concepts. Following this thought process and seeing something through will show if you have the skill set to stick with IM as a career path for the future. If at first you don't succeed have another go but with many failures behind you whilst working with a clear objective and IM is probably not for you.

A suggestion of tools required for the choice of model would also be very useful. Brands/manufactures are not relevant, but the function they serve is. For example if your planned venture is article related you may need some article submission or grammar checking software. Discussions related to preferred choice would be best left to the product review forum for a free for all but the underlying message of need would still be listed.

There may be some who feel that if people are indeed failing before they have started then this offers more scope for others to succeed. I must confess I do not agree with this thought. This just means what is left is a weaker pool. There are lots of people using discussion boards like WF who come from non techie backgrounds that have a lot to offer by way of business skills, acumen, financial analysis, resource management etc. (these are all core business skills) that IM will lose out from because these newbies simply could not see the wood for the trees in IM.

I have always found that by educating those around me in a similar field I have always got back more than I have put in. From the initial seed of direction the fresh eyes have shown me a different perspective that has helped with my own objectives.

I'll put the soap box away now.

Well, in all honesty, IM is not as easy to understand/profit from as people make it out to be.

Also, those internet marketers who sell push button AMAZING SOFTWARES which will earn their customers tons of cash seem to be contributing towards creating more confusion.

In order to be successful in IM, you NEED to understand:

    1. SEO
    2. Link building
    3. Copywriting
    4. Marketing.

This is a lot to take in for any newbie, especially for people looking for quick money.

    what a valuable post ....

I often think many people jump into IM hopeful yet deep down they really do not even believe success is possible. So kind of like a self fulfilling prophecy .. they never see results & quit. Just my thought ...

Also I know many people working their asses off doing what they are told to do ... and still getting nowhere. So I can see that being frustrating & they start to believe it is all a scam & give up too. But if they had just stopped learning all the new techniques and stuck with something then put their own spin on it ... then they started to see results.

Following others teaching is great & necessary up to a point and then you need to take what you know and make it yours . I found that to be true for myself anyhow ...

My little boy wanted a bicycle... it looked easy enough and it must be pretty fun also, he had to be thinking to himself, "everyone is having such a great time riding them on TV, in my neighborhood and according to my best friend Jared at school."

So, off to the local Target store we went to pick out a new bicycle - his grandfather had sent some money for his birthday for him to get one.

"Look at all of the cool bicycles!" he exclaimed...

He sat on a couple, we looked at the cool colors and checked the features and quality of the bicycles, then purchased the one he liked best.

He was so excited... I was a proud father, my son was growing up.

We got home, he ran inside and grabbed his Mom by the hand, nearly breaking off her arm dragging her outside to see his new bicycle.

    We strapped on the helmet and adjusted the seat, covered the mechanics of how to ride the bicycle;

~ these are the handlebars, this is how you steer.
~ this is the front break, this is the rear brake - this is how you stop.
~ these are peddles, push these and the wheels go faster.
~ balance, that's the key son, balance. Also, remember this - it's almost impossible to balance a bicycle when you are sitting on it and your feet are on the peddles if it's not moving. Keep it moving and you'll actually find it easier to balance - momentum is the key.

I pointed him down the driveway which gently sloped down so he didn't have to work too hard at getting started... gave him a gently push, training wheels "clickety-clicking" as we moved faster and faster...

Then, I let go - and so did he.

He looked back, the driveway ended and into the ditch on the other side of the road he flew.

"Turn, turn, turn - hit the brakes, stop, Michael!"

Over the years of raising my three children I've come to understand some basic truths, one of which is that with a little encouragement, you can get most children to try almost anything if they trust you - and some children, with a little discouragement, it's very, very difficult to get them to try new things or things they've failed at again.

The Crash caused a few bruises and bumps, sure... even scratched his shiny new bicycle but most of all, the fall hurt Michael's pride...

He had two choices... stop right there and quit riding his bicycle because he fell off one time or pick it up, get back on, learn from his mistakes and ride again, and again, and again and again until he was having fun like all of those other kids riding their bicycles.

Michael is a great kid and my wife and I are blessed with some incredible children, to be sure.

He refused to give up - had the courage to ask for my help and feedback, we went over a few things, did some smaller trials of the functions of brakes and handlebars, and then - he was heading down the driveway again.

This time, he ran into the mailbox.

Michael's comment after running into the mailbox?

    "Dad! I turned, I turned!"

Internet marketing isn't a business - there really isn't any such thing as internet marketing but I suppose that is just semantics.

I could say that the internet is just a media, a way to promote and sell what your business offers; products, programs or services, but arguing about definitions won't help you get any closer to your goals.

What would help a lot of new entrepreneurs is a clear understanding that building a business isn't like a job.

You don't get paid just because you show up. You don't get paid just because you have a degree.

And, nobody else can ride the bicycle for you if you want to get all of the rewards and have all of the fun.

That takes some falling down, probably some training wheels (you should have seen Michael the day we took off his training wheels! I'm so proud of that boy.), and if you are smart - some guidance and help from others who can help you.

Persistence helps also... if you give up before you can ride the bicycle and put it in the garage never to try again, is it the bicycles fault?

Failure is not what happens to someone who falls off of his bicycle, it's what happens to someone who never gets back on his bicycle.

Set realistic goals, know that in all likelihood you will run off the road or hit a mailbox now and then and don't expect to be riding trick bicycles and entering bicycle racing competitions your first year.

Enjoy the learning, the falling, the experience and keep getting back on the bicycle. To me, if you want to ride a bicycle bad enough, what other choice do you have?

They expect things to happen overnight and they are not consistent in what they are told to do, in the same time They depend on invalid or outdated information.
They do not know their limits (abilities) and they do not do their own independent research on IM models.

In short they come to conclusions without reading the whole book.

    Faiz,

Yeah! It is true that many are giving up from internet marketing and the reason for this they think is no result while the actual reason is that put less effort and that too in wrong way. Even I am in the IM field but I haven't got/felt anything like that because when you are in marketing then your each step should be targeted and well taken.

Why people quit? Well because they haven't got a paper like I do, near their computer, saying the following:

"A winner never quits and a quitter never wins" from Napoleon Hills. I had many pissed and frustrating days, where I didn't feel like doing squat. The only thing that kept me together was reading that affirmation.

IM isn't easy but it ins't impossible and many people make it sound like a huge monster. I just stopped hearing what others say and took action.

Anyway, people expect fast results and when they don't get them, they simply quit. Besides they waste too much time hearing everyone else. Who cares if John Doe took 5 years to start doing money. It doesn't mean you will. The more action you take the better results you will achieve.

However, less people means less competition and that is good for me
