Hello I was just wondering if i could get some insight on the truth about dup content.. I am making a site However it will share many qualites of other sites .. i ran some sort of program that supposively measured the percemt alike from other sites it was at about 25%.. Ive heard everything from getting your site deindexed to its a complete myth and everything in between.. However i did create 2 sites about 4 months ago that are very similar and ran the program they are about 78% alike..and not deindexed I was just wondering if anyone could enlighten me thanks

Well Google doesn't deindex sites for duplicate content - otherwise hundreds of genuine news sites that pretty much just republish press releases would be gone.

But Google does try to decide which was the 'original' version where there are multiple versions of the same thing on different sites. So it may not show any of the 'duplicates' in search results.

As to how much percentage wise means 'duplicate', I guess we need Google to answer that one :-)

After updating Google panda, you should take care about content. Always try to use fresh and unique content. I know it is impossible to always write unique content for very famous topics, in this case you can use canonical tags in your website to prevent from spamming.

Agree with Mills, i have never heard that a website got deindexed as it was using duplicate content but ranking may affect. Google tries to rank the original version higher among the multiple available versions of same content.

So what about the ranking of your both the websites. Are the both enjoying the same?

Google is very particular about duplicate content. It is better to show synonyms or fresh content to avoid duplicate content issue. After panda update Google is very conscious about unique content. Many authority sites lost top 10 rank after panda update.
