This is an eternal debate. I make money of small niche sites and from larger "authority" sites.

There are pro's and con's for both.

If you have MANY small niche sites on different topics then if one suffers in Google then you still have the others to depend on. But it is hard to focus and maintain a large portfolio of niche websites.

If you have ONE large website it is easier to focus on in terms of content and getting links etc but should google decide to drop the website in the serps then your whole income is gone. Ask ezinearticles and squidoo....

But there is merit in both. I try to have a handfull of semi "authority" sites, mainly product reviews in 4 - 5 markets and try and focus on them and then I have a dozen or so niche websites focusing on just one or two products.

Building a large authority website like about.com does not suit my personality and my goals, so I do not do it. I like variety and working on new projects. If I had to work on just one website all the time I would die of boredom. So you have to consider your own personal goals / motivations and style also.
