Creating Wordpress Blog and Website

I am trying to figure out if I have to install Wordpress Blog each for my blog and website that will be on the same domain name.

I have just registered a domain name. I want to use it for a website and a blog as well using Wordpress platform. Will I install wordpress twice for the blog and website separately?

The confused mind needs clarification. Thank you

You don't have to install it for each, it can all be one in the same.

Wordpress lets you have a "static" home page, which would be your "normal' web site and then you can have a 'blog' page too.

WP is powerful and can be set up almost anyway you want.

In my understanding of what the OP is trying to do, wouldn't they have to install WP two times??

First time, on the domain where they would like to use WP as their actual web site...then a 2nd time, even if on the same domain, under a different sub-folder?

    For example:

    * WP 'web site' is installed on primary domain = www.your-site.com
    * WP "blog" is then installed under either blog.your-site.com OR www.your-site.com/blog

Is this right, or am I confused as well? :-)

I too was under the impression that WP would be installed twice.

First under the root domain directory then second in a sub-folder.

    Hey Don,

Check out 'Wordpress for Dummies' (part of the 'For Dummies' series of books)--it explains the differences b.t. the .org and .com versions of WP, plus, how you can use Wordpress MU (which may not at all fit your needs.)

Your library likely has a copy of this, but you can get it at the online/offline bookstore for about $24.00.

    Cheers.

The question is a bit vague, as mentioned there are two ways of doing this.

Method 1 is a single install of Wordpress at "yoursite.com", with a Blog at "yoursite.com/blog". Use Fantastco or install the latest version of WordPress by FTP or SFTP to the root of your site. Set the Home page to use a Static page, this is the home page for "yoursite.com"
Create a page in WordPress called "blog" and set your posts to post to that page - thi sis yur blog site.

This is really easy, only issue might be that you will be using the same theme for your blog and your main site.

Method 2 is to do two separate installs, one at "yoursite.com", the other at "yoursite.com/blog". You can set "yoursite.com" to use either a static or posts page as the home page, your choice . Keep the settings on the second WordPress site at default, so the posts page is the first page. You can now use separate Themes and Plugins for both installations.

    Hope this is clear.

Installing Wp twice on a site is not the best way to do this. That would require TWICE the amount of work as you would have to add by hand all the interactive links between the two and deal with 2 sites.

You can install it once and accomplish everything you need to.

      Hi W Don

      Your question intrigues me.

I have one more for you - actually more than one. Why do you want two sites (especially if they are blogs on the one domain)

For example which is going to be the money making site - the blog on the root or on the subfolder?

Perhaps I would focus on what the money making site will be and put that on the root

Or why not just have the blog on the one domain and look what you can integrate. I think you are going to have a lot of unnecessary duplication here.

I think if you can somehow keep to the KISS principal you are going to have less headaches down the road.

      Regards

      Peter

Sounds to me like you want your website to be the landing page and the blog to be the main component. I have set something up like this similar to what you are talking about where http://videomarketingseries.com is the content and blog component and http://videomarketingseries.com/join is the landing page or "money page."

Basically what I did here is created a new page template and built the "Join" page using html and installed it on my wordpress domain as a new page. This one is kinda tricky and you will need some advanced Wordpress skills to pull it off.

If this looks like the solution you are looking for, let me know if I can help.

Totally agree with VegasGreg. I would think the best method is a single install of Wordpress at your designated website and with a Blog at your web page/blog. Use the latest version of WordPress by FTP or SFTP to the root of your site. Then set your home page to use a "static" page, then this would be your home page for yoururl.com. Then create a page in WordPress called blog and set your posts to post to that page - I would think this would be your blog page. Hope this helps!

This is almost precisely what I'm trying to do right now. Can someone help me out with it?

Someone else designed and installed WP for me, but we're having a devil of a time making it do what I want it to.

I have just four questions and would LOVE it if someone could help me out with this:

      1. How do I set the home page to be static and NOT allow posts. As of right now, that's the page that allows posts...

      2. Can I edit the sidebar so that what the sidebar contains is unique to each page?

      3. Can I take out the sidebar entirely on each page -- leaving it only on the blog page -- so that it looks more like a web site than a blog?

      4. Can I have a different header image for the blog page than for the rest of the site? As of right now, my designer says she doesn't know how to do that.

I keep thinking how everyone says how easy WP is supposed to be but I'm not finding it easy at all! In fact, it's got me seriously frustrated. I just need a few simple things done, but am finding it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to get straight answers or find out how to do what I want. But I'm not willing to compromise on them because they're necessary for marketing purposes.

I FINALLY have a blog and site design that I like -- LOVE in fact! But the little details are driving me INSANE!

If someone can pleas help me, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I'm completely new to WP so it's a learning curve for me. I have WP 2.7, if that helps!

      Sincerely,
      Michelle

Everything you are asking about here is possible, but you will need some advanced skills to pull it off. If you are new to wordpress, I would suggest that you hire someone to do these tasks if you need it now because they will take a lot of time to learn. You are going to need a big time investment to learn these skills. Once you get them though, you will love what wordpress has to offer.

    one last suggestion....

if you want to have a real static feel for the "site" blog, get the flexi-pages widget

it allows you to create "parent and child pages". making it much easier to manage your content. there are also plugins to create columns inside the post area to break away from the typical "blog look"
