I'm feeling generous today.

Keyword: 'Hot Pink Dress'

Check out the (lack of) competition for this keyword:

Can you say TOTAL DOMINATION with a little bit of work?

Here's the search volume for that keyword and it's long tails:

HotPinkDress.org is available RIGHT NOW for someone smart enough to scoop it up.

That's all I have for you.

GOOD LUCK!

Brendon

Simply change the color and your options become literally endless. Add in the word Cocktail and things get even more interesting.

Perfect example of taking a lemon... and making lemonade.

Maybe a little off topic, but how do you use Market Samurai to decide if a niche is suitable. How did you interpret the data you presented and come to the conclusion that this was an under served niche?

        Cru,

I use Market Samurai almost exclusively for the SEO competition function it comes with, which is the screenshot I posted above. Combined with using GAKT, it's all I really need to get started finding niches.

I took one look at the top ten and the number of backlinks that each site has, along with the page rank, and then I made my decision. I try to keep it simple.

I concluded that if I were to get that site up and running with excellent content and a lot of great backlinks, I can hit the top three in a few months. I'm not always right with my timing, but my persistence always pays off.

That's a pretty sweet idea. Thanks for the share.

dhigler - It's always interesting to see this kind of keyword and surprising levels of competition. I have stumbled across numerous similar examples over the years.

As a side note though... just curious as to what software and or systems you feel provide the best tool for evaluating keyword demand and competition? I have used many myself but am always interested to hear if other professional marketers and SEO experts have a strong opinion about it (and why).

    Cheers!

Something to keep in mind about ecommerce like keywords (such as this). Many times the competition will be low, and as shocking as that is its true. The reason is that many ecommerce sites, unless laser targeted into certain niches simply do not have the time to properly optimize each one of their product pages for the search engines.

This is why you'll find many sites ranked for certain keywords with very little on-page optimization. Many stores will simply copy and paste the product description from the manufacturer catalog which doesn't help matters.

So for those who arrive with an EMD, correctly optimized title, h1 and meta desc tags, along with great original content will have a fighting chance. Of course this isn't a hard rule and every keyword is different, but it is something to keep in mind.

I don't suppose this is going to change drastically anytime soon, either.

Even still, you couldn't possibly target every single long tail keyword that exists. That wouldn't make very good use of your time-speaking from the vantage point of the ecommerce site.

      Mike,

I am far from an expert, but here you go:

The best tool in existence is the free one, IMO. It's the Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

You don't need Market Samurai to get the data I pulled in the screenshot above, I believe the SEO Toolbar Firefox Plugin will get you the same data, but Market Samurai gets it faster for me.

Again, no secret formula. I use Market Samurai and I like the program, if for nothing more than it speeds my research up. Sometimes I'll spend an entire day doing research which isn't necessary. Then again I love that part of the process.
