I had white smoke and it brought a nasty little virus with it... When I searched I found loads of people had the same problem. It was really hard to get rid of too.

so be careful what you download... I found a woman on fiverr that proof reads and edits and does 2500 words for $5, she is great. Let me know if you want her contact details

You can use paperrater.c0m to check your grammar, you can check your entire article, unlike white smoke it is only accepting 250 characters at a time.

Also paperrater.c0m Find out if your paper contains plagiarized text

I think the answer depends on your needs. If you're a native English speaker, then I've yet to find a grammar checker that is more effective than proofreading the text myself.
If you're not a native English speaker, you need to find an application that will also explain why you're making the mistake: much harder to find. I always feel the better solution is to have your work proofread by a native English speaker with editing experience. Have a look on Fiverr. There are lots of people offering the service.
Also try searching for online sites offering to pass your work to a human rather than run it through an app.
You could always look for someone on this site and offer to share expertise. If they proofread for you, you'll share some knowledge you have in return.

I am a proofreader and editor as well as a writer and I recommend MY services above the software ones. I only say that because I have used a few of them and they often produce faults. The human touch is the best if you have the right human.

I used Whitesmoke for over a year with no virus problems. It works better than any other program I tried.

Always interested to hear about such programs though.

Since I have it already, I just use Word. A lot of the suggestions it gives are just garbage, but a lot of them are good too. If a person doesn't have a basic use of the language they might be difficult to tell apart.

Even though I am quite experienced and have an honors degree in English lit, the Word suggestions often help something out.

Chess is very simple compared to a language. Computers have now beaten grand masters at chess, but it is going to take longer for them to be able to cover a language completely.

I'm sure I'm getting ready to blasted here. But if you're a native English speaker all you need is the checker in MS Word.

People don't care about grammar. If fact, many of the highest paid writers in the world break tons of grammar "rules." (think copywriters).

If you just write like you talk, you'll have a much better chance of connecting with your audience. Use small words. Write short sentences. Focus on the message, not the mechanics.

      Merry Christmas everyone!

The best grammar checker is my mother - unfortunately she's not available for general download.
There's rarely a sentence I can get out without her wailing at me, 'It's sit, not sat, won't you ever learn'. 'When I was at school, bla bla bla..."
I'd happily package her up and send her if anyone's interested.
She'd be handy for tidying your house between grammar checking sessions.

Love this reply! You sure we can't download your mom? :p I would also definitely be keeping her for housework too. lol

I have always proofread my own work, but some of my author friends have given me a couple of the following recommendations.

Pro Writing Aid - Writing Improvement & Editing Software - it has some free tools. One of my author friends swears by this software: StyleWriter 4 - Professional Plain English Proofreading and Editing Software

I agree with Peejaydee and Laurencewins. There's nothing like written work proofread and edited by a live dude who knows what he's doing. These programs/software are based on Microsoft Word's F7 function, which checks grammar and spelling. Oooh I hate how it checks my documents LOL.

  • There are many tools that do basic grammar check.. however I recommend for high quality you go with the ultimate tool - 'the human mind'..

..and I don't mean do it yourself - your time as a marketer/entrepreneur is far too valuable..

..instead outsource it through sites like ODesk, Freelancer or even Fiverr so someone to check through the grammar - this is an effective and cheap way.

    Hope this helps

Online English grammar checkers/tools are predominantly used by professionals as well as amateurs. Without specifically labeling the use base it draws, it is safe to say that using such tools makes learning English all the more better. In fact, it wouldn't wrong to state that such checker tools have made life easier for many through their convenience that aids in feasibly saving time and efforts that would otherwise be spent on proofreading.

I see this has been necroposted twice, but since it's back in the land of the living, I'll throw in my two cents.

Nothing replaces a skilled human editor, but if you're looking for something automated, Grammarly really is an excellent product. The free version is pretty good on its own. The paid version is exceptional.

Hemingway Editor is another interesting one. I alternate between how I feel about it. It's quirky to be sure, and imperfect, but it takes a unique approach to the task. At the very least it provides some food for thought that the other's don't.
