Hi all,
I am going to set up a few niche sites, but cannot decide which would be best a website or blog.
It seems that Google likes wordpress blogs, and rewards bloggers with high rankings and fast indexing.
What do you think?
Regards
Jeff.

How about using something like Wordpress as a CMS instead of just a Blog...

Hey Jeff, I agree with Jon above if you are selling your own product. For marketing affiliate products, I'd go with WP blogs or Squidoo lenses. You can throw them up fast and get them on "G" in a couple days--if not hours.

When I do this my goal is to get on the front page of Google and hold my position for 2 weeks just to leech off the buzz of a new product launch. After that time I don't consider it worth juicing the blog or lens--time is more profitably spent promoting the next new product launch.

This is probably the best way to go about it. Get yourself a landing page first, then build up a structure of blogs and mini-sites (such as Squidoo and HubPages) around it to help support it. There's no reason not to have all the tools you possibly can at your disposal. It all equals traffic, and thus sales, in the end.

    Hi Jeff

Both have their merits, and IMO it all depends on what you're trying to do. Are you trying to sell ebooks or some other product, or are you concentrating on getting adsense or Clickbank AdRotator clicks, for example? How are you planning to get traffic to your website or blog? Some methods work better for a blog, and some for a website.

Blogs are great because you can get indexed very quickly, and people seem to generally 'like' blogs (providing you give useful content of course!) Websites are better for sales pages, opt-ins, etc (although it can work on a blog as well)

You could do both. Link one to the other.

    Hope that helps a little.

    Hi Jeff,

If you aren't going to update the sites very often I'd tend to lean more towards static sites ( keep it simple ). If you want user interaction and updating content regularly then go for blogs. The truth is both can work so incorporate both into your overall strategy as they both have merits. Static sites break less and cause less headaches...

    FYI:

I'm a long time Web programmer and I always stuck my position that I can develop a site from scratch that does everything I need and I can do it much better than using a "canned" (read: blog site) approach.

    Well, I've dumped that philosophy.

I'm now a Wordpress convert. All my new sites are being set up in Wordpress with hosting at Hostgator. I can find a great-looking theme and have everything I need up and running in a matter of minutes. And to be honest with you, there are sufficient plug-ins and theme choices for WP that, so far, I haven't found anything that I COULDN'T do within the WP framework.

Now, I may encounter something in the future that has me back to hand coding and programming from the ground up. But right now, I'm loving Wordpress and I'm enjoying the Google love I'm getting from those sites.

For me, it's now "can I do this with Wordpress?" first, then everything else later.

Oh, and WP can do static pages, too, so a WP-based site doesn't have to be strictly a blog-entry type site.

Steve, yes, things changed for me drastically in 2006 when I switched to WordPress. I am blown away by the SE love I get not just from Google but Yahoo too!

WordPress is bar none the easiest way to get noticed especially if your content is original and you post consistently.

WP is a simplified version of CMS and when they added in more widget and plugin, it bacome a full-CMS.

    So, Blog = website.

I've asked a couple of questions today in other people's threads. I hate doing that but I can't find an answer using the 'search' function. So, when anyone here is talking about WP, they mean the one from .org, the one that needs to be self hosted? Someone on another thread said WP might remove an account that seems to be commercial. I suppose they meant the .com, freely hosted one. I don't want to ask again there in case I'm seen as an interloper.

Thanks, Sridhar. I hope the 'yes' wasn't in agreement to me being an interloper. Smiley thing should go here but I don't know how to find them to put them in. That's not a question. No need for an answer.

If you're looking at marketing affiliate products, I'd use a wordpress blog or a squidoo lens. Both of these sources are very easy to set up within a couple days or hours.
In my experience, both are quite effective in getting to the front page of Google very quickly. Then try starting to promote your new product and give it maximum coverage on both of your sources. Hope this assists!

When using a wp blog even though they have plugins for spamming it seems you have to do a lot of work keeping the blog going. You have to monitor comments, watch for spam, worry about having your blog hijacked,ect...
