First $100 day with affiliate sales! Here is how you do it.

Back when I started this last November, my goal was to make $100/day. Yesterday, I hit that goal for the first time, selling 24 products through Amazon for a total of $102 in commissions earned. I’ve had a lot of days around $70-80, but this was the first time I hit $100 – and I’m very happy.

The best part is that I didn’t do anything work-related at all yesterday. I took the Saturday off, and I was playing video games all day and made $100 for it.

I'm not writing this to sell you something. I'm writing it as motivation for people that were in my shoes last year. This forum has been the basis for all of the success I've had, and I want to share a little information back.

If you read my earlier posts on the Warrior Forum, in March of this year I made a similar post about how I got my first Amazon cheque… which was for about $100 for an entire month. You can read that post here. 6 months later, I have made that amount in a single day. This is with one single income stream, too. I can't even imagine the possibilities when I branch out into things like list building, which I know I should have been doing long ago. There are also things like AdSense, ClickBank, and a million other ways to make money online.

Want to know how I did it? No matter which method you go with, the basics are the same. Here's how:

  1. Provide value: At first I just wanted to sell items. If you work in a way that you’re providing valuable info to people, you will see the benefits.
  2. Work hard: You aren’t going to make money overnight unless you’re extremely lucky. It took me an entire month of work to make my first sale and commission of 97 cents. If you want to make a good, steady income online, you have to tread it like a real job. You have to be willing to put in the work every single day. I am sitting here 8+ hours a day working, researching, etc. If you aren't willing to do that, you're going to have trouble.
  3. Be okay with making mistakes: I’ve had a lot of missteps in getting to this point. You’re probably going to make mistakes all the time, and that’s okay! If you learn from them, it was not a mistake at all; it was a learning experience that you can apply to to future work.
  4. Disregard the "make money overnight" sellers!: I can almost guarantee that anyone selling a product that guarantees you quick/easy/overnight cash is outright lying to you, or their method relies on something that will not work long term. Making money online takes actual work and effort, and it's a long-term thing yo u should work toward.
Once you apply these things, you will see results. My income figuratively exploded when I started to work hard at providing value to my visitors. It’s easy to throw up a trashy, 1-5 page thin affiliate site. You’ll probably make a few dollars, but is this really a long-term income stream? Are you really providing any kind of value to your visitors?

If you set out with a goal of providing great info, you will go far as an affiliate marketer. I’m sure this will apply to those that are creating their own products, as well. If you are providing information, or a good answer to a problem someone has, you’re 75% of the way there. The other 25% is working hard in the correct direction.

On "taking action": People in the internet marketing world often say that “taking action” is the most important part of making money on the internet. While I don’t entirely disagree with this, it is a complete waste of time to take action in the wrong direction. While it’s important to avoid the “paralysis of analysis” trap that almost all new internet marketers fall into, it’s equally important to make sure you understand what you’re getting into before you start railroading down a track. It would be incredibly demoralizing to work on a website for 3 months only to find out that you were trying to sell freezers to Eskimos, or had never heard of Search Engine Optimization before. Taking action is extremely important, but you have to strike a balance between that and making sure you know what you're doing, first.

There are so many people that come here with questions like "I need to make $1000 this month to pay my mortgage! Tell me how!" - this is impossible. This isn't how making money online works if you have never made a cent before. The lucky might be able to pull it off, but the real dough is made over time, and you build yourself up to that point. There are no "get rich quick" schemes to make money online. The sooner you understand this, the better.

I’m posting this not only as a future reminder to myself to how far I’ve come, but also as a motivator for others. Work hard, and provide value, and you’re 3/4 of the way there. I wish everyone here success, and I hope that I continue to have it, as well.

      It's very simple, really.

No matter what your marketing strategy is, there are ways to provide info.

If you're writing an eBook to sell (or any other type of product creation), you need to answer the questions someone might be looking for an answer to.

If you're selling products as an affiliate, you have to give them all the information they need to make a well-informed purchase. If you're selling "beat making" software, is it actually good software? Is it something people would want to use? Are you giving them valid, objective information on the product?

I have only experience in affiliate sales, so I can't speak much about the other methods of making an income online, but to me it basically boils down to supplying the information I think people would be looking for when they're on my website.

Thank you, mattward, for these really sensible pointers. I totally agree that there is no overnight money maker online, and that you should simply 'unsubscribe' every email that tries to promise that. I have no problem these days writing what I think is good content, and I am slowly seeing results. But we need to keep stressing to all newbies that this business is like any other - it takes hard work and dedication over years to see real results. Your words are spot on!

Wise words for sure, very good advice. How do you get your traffic? I'm assuming all thru Google search? How do you pick your products that you sell on Amazon? I'm looking to branch out into Amazon a bit.

Some excellent advice there Matt, thanks. It's nice to be reminded that the key lies in providing value. It's all about reciprocation, or the 'God Father Method' as coined by Frank Kern. Help those around you as much as you can and they will feel compelled to help you in return.

And if they don't, the universe somehow will.

When I started with AdSense I read that it is prohibited to lead the buyer into clicking the ads. In affiliate marketing, is it ok to talk your way into selling the linked products to your visitors? How do you do an effective affiliate marketing campaign without breaking the terms?

Of course. When you become an affiliate of a product, you're free to promote it in any manner you like, as long as it's ethical. Affiliate marketers earn thousands by "asking" people to buy from their link. That's what it's all about. I suggest you get a good affiliate marketing course to help you get started in the right direction. I'd recommend Sean Donahoe's, or Andrew Hansen's stuff. Search around. It's worth the investment.

@OP, thanks for the motivational post! I'm yet to hit the $100/day milestone, but I'm sure I will achieve it very soon. I used to keep dreaming and dreaming, and when I did start taking actions, I went in the wrong directions. Heck, I had even started doing unethical stuff. Needless to say, I regret it. But now I have very clear and specific goals and know exactly what and how I want to go about affiliate marketing. I bookmarked this post and I'll read it whenever failure strikes me in future. Thanks a lot.

Also, it's interesting to know Amazon is your major platform. I haven't considered it much. The payouts are pretty low, but the products are so good and seem easy to promote... I wanna jump into that too. So I'm just wondering, what kind of products are you selling? Like, are they REALLY expensive ones? For example, washing machines worth hundreds of dollars... computer servers worth thousands, etc. Obviously, you can't really make a living easily by selling books off Amazon as affiliate. :/ I'd be quite thankful if you could point me in the right direction here - I'm quite a newbie when it comes to Amazon. The "$0 commissions" when I log into Amazon keeps mocking me, LOL.

Matt, thank you so much for your honest post. You are giving me hope again! I too pluck away at it every day (though I don't have 8 hours available for this) at affiliate sites, and its slow going. The learning curve is high, and I am not seeing results yet. But either way, I approach this thing with enthusiasm each day, and I believe it will pay off eventually, and I'll get better at it and quicker. I am learning new things all the time and I love it. Thanks for the reality check that I have to put in the time first. That's just how it works.

That is really awesome Matt. I know my first day over twenty dollars was a milestone. With effort I know I'll get up to 100 and beyond. I have some of the same questions as others on here. What sort of products are you involved with at Amazon? and how are you doing that? I've not had any success with Amazon. my income is pretty much all from adsense on my sites. I've written some product reviews and linked to amazon, but no bites. could you share a link to a product review or a page where you have amazon links? Thanks! and again congrats on passing the daily Benjamin plateau!

I've had a number of questions here and via PM asking about specifics. Unfortunately, I don't want to identify any of my websites or niches, and really don't have time to respond individually to everyone; I hope that's understandable. Also, I'm not quite in a position to be able to mentor people: I'm still insanely busy with my own stuff so far. On top of that, I am by no means an expert at all, and certainly don't claim to be. Every day is a learning experience. You can read my first posts on this forum from last November, and I had almost no idea of what I was doing. I know infinitely more today than I did last year, that's for sure, but there are millions of things I know I need to learn, and a million things I need to learn that I don't even know about yet. Just learn a little at a time; don't try to learn it all at once. I am very excited about the future possibilities when I reach the level of knowledge/experience that some of the really successful people on this forum have.

Find a need -> fill it

That's all there is to it. As an example: look at all of the successful IM products like Market Samurai, ScrapeBox, Article Marketing Robot, etc. Each of these are successful because they fill a need that existed. If you can identify a niche/need that doesn't have a solution/answer online, and then create the best solution/answer to it that you can (with some way of monetizing it, of course) you'll make money and be helping people in the process. You don't have to create a solution (product creation) but you can create a resource that points the user to the solution (affiliate marketing). There is obviously a lot more money to be made in product creation, but you gotta go with what suits your strengths and abilities.

Of course, you need traffic to your site, or affiliates to sell your product, etc. That's a whole different ball game that you could read about all day. There is a ton of info to learn in order to be successful. Don't try to learn it all at once. Learn enough to get started, and then learn along the way. Hell, I'm learning new things every single day, and I guarantee you everyone else that makes money online is learning daily, too.

There are probably successful people here that read what I've said and find it laughably stupid. Again, I'm no expert at all, but what I've outlined here has worked for me. I'm sure there are people making a great income online in ways that I haven't even though of.

Motivational posts like this were extremely encouraging to me when I started in IM, so I'm glad that this post seems to be helping encourage others, too.

Anyway, I really should be getting back to work.

Honestly, I get what I consider to be very few visitors. It's just that it's very targeted traffic. My CTR (site -> Amazon) on the $100 day was 50%, to put it in perspective. I know there are people that are doing much better than that (or so I've read here, anyway), so there is always something better to strive for.

I think everyone is overlooking the fact that there is 2 powerful word in OP's post.

      "WORK HARD"

      Yes!

You knew i was going to say that didnt you!

      But unfortunatly it is true!!!

Even met a rich business tycoon or a millionaire who got rich by sitting on their fat arse all day. (Paris hilton is not included )

      Hard work, will pay off.

When you work smarter and harder, that is how you can create yourself a multimillion dollar empire. Just make sure you are hanging out with people that have already gotten there. chances are their success will rub off on you. Actually its almost imopossible for it not too.

Yes, that is absolutely the key. I was making some money every month when I was half-assing everything, but when I buckled down and worked hard for an entire month (8+ hours every single day), my online income multiplied, literally. $100 weeks became $100 days. I can see even $1000 days being possible now; it's all just a matter of putting in the work.

Another thing that really helped me was to set small goals and keep track of every success. My first goal that I made and was really excited to meet was to make $100 in one week. Of course, that's very little, but that was an attainable goal made at the very beginning when I was still figuring things out. After you meet your first small goal, make one bigger and better but still attainable.

There's definitely something to be said about the old "work smarter, not harder" cliche, but that doesn't mean you don't have to work hard, too. It's especially important when you are new to IM and aren't making much money yet. I've been doing absolutely everything myself, and I'm excited about having the income now to be able to outsource things.

(btw, I think I said this before, but celente was one of my inspirations when I first joined this forum. I hope I, in turn, can inspire someone else. :p )

I'm so glad for your success. Really a $100 day in less than a year of internet marketing s pretty good (I think). My only $100 day would be a single $500 commission. I've had a couple that might have been $70 or $80 days, but don't think I've hit $100. That is my goal.

Today I've been going through some training videos on a new concept. It's building on a conept hat I've had some success with. It's kind of boring going through the videos alone. There was some live training but I missed the last part of it.

I'm going to go take a quick walk with our dogs, but then I'll come back and I'll remember your point and your example that this is possible with hard work and persistence.

i would also like to know how many amazon sites you have set up since november if you dont mind me asking

im not trying to find out the niches you used or see your sites.
im just curious how many sites that number is spread over

To be totally honest, the number of websites you run isn't an important factor. It's all about driving traffic to what you have: for example, you could have 100 sites that get 10 visitors a day, or 1 site that gets 1000 visitors a day: no difference. But, yes, the vast majority of my traffic comes from being all over Google page 1 for various keywords, but I also am making a half-assed attempt at driving direct traffic through various outlets (forums, etc). Almost all of the traffic is SEO traffic, so yeah, that's a big part of it.

I want to stress that Amazon is not really the important factor here. I wouldn't recommend anyone build their entire online business around a single thing (Amazon, SEO, whatever).

So... yesterday I smashed that $100, especially since I barely squeeked into a higher pay bracket on Amazon. I almost went into shock when I looked at my stats this morning.

Don't give up, guys. I started my first website 11 months ago, and it's taken me this long, but I'm finally making some nice income. I didn't expect to have fast success, and I didn't, and neither will you. Once you can crack the egg and make your first legitimate $20 in a method that isn't sketchy, understand EXACTLY how you did it. Understand exactly how you got the person to your website, and sold that affiliate product, or got the lead that hired you to build them a website, or whatever it may be that made you the $20. When you know exactly how you did it, run with it. Do it 100x over, because if you can make $20, you can make $200, $2000, etc.

There are tons of ways to make money online, and you don't even have to touch things like Amazon or other affiliate programs. There was another newbie on the forum that started around the same time I did, and was struggling with affiliate sales: they started to build websites for other people and made a killing with it. There is a ton of money in providing services for people if you have a skill like web design, writing, graphic design, or anything like that. That would be a super quick way to make money today. I would avoid sites like fiverr, though: advertise on a place like this website where you'll get much more money for your time and skills. I've made a bit of money providing services for others, but found it's not really my thing. It definitely could be for you, though; if you have a marketable skill like the ones I mentioned, I guarantee you can make money with it today.

My main goal right now is to separate myself from Google and build an authority site with e-mail list, etc. A lot of the successful people here keep talking about the absolute necessity of building a list, so I probably should have done that long ago. Better late then never, right? I will probably be kicking myself for not building a list sooner, but oh well.

I'm sorry for rambling on... this website is responsible for almost all of my success so far, and I still consider myself a newbie at this. There is always something new to learn, and I'm learning from this website every single day. I want other newbies to know that it's definitely possible to make great money on this stupid internet thing. :p The thing is, it takes work - and LOTS of it. There aren't any push button solutions. You have to put your nose to the grindstone at first, and be prepared to do a lot of work without knowing that it's going to pay off or not.

My problem is getting consistent sales. I have had a $200 day and several $100 days, but most days it is much lower. I track conversions which, doing organic SEO, tend to be much larger numbers than perhaps PPC would yield (eg 500, 600 or even 700 clicks per sale) but am not sure how to improve things. Slightly off-topic, I know, but I would welcome any suggestions.

Thanks Matt this is very motivational.

I've been dabbling with affiliate marketing here and there and I've made fistfuls of sales.

Its only in the recent weeks that I've created traffic generation systems that runs on it own (traffic is way important).

In fact it was less than 3 hours ago that I gave my outsourcer the green light to take hold of the traffic generation system I created.

    We'll see how it goes!

    Thanks again Matt.

P.S.: $100/day with affiliate products, that's my first level goal too.

Originally Posted by Matt Ward View Post

Back when I started this last November, my goal was to make $100/day. Yesterday, I hit that goal for the first time, selling 24 products through Amazon for a total of $102 in commissions earned. I've had a lot of days around $70-80, but this was the first time I hit $100 - and I'm very happy.

The best part is that I didn't do anything work-related at all yesterday. I took the Saturday off, and I was playing video games all day and made $100 for it.

I'm not writing this to sell you something. I'm writing it as motivation for people that were in my shoes last year. This forum has been the basis for all of the success I've had, and I want to share a little information back.

If you read my earlier posts on the Warrior Forum, in March of this year I made a similar post about how I got my first Amazon cheque... which was for about $100 for an entire month.

If you work in a way that you're providing valuable info to people, you will see the benefits.
    2. Work hard: You aren't going to make money overnight unless you're extremely lucky.
    3. Be okay with making mistakes: I've had a lot of missteps in getting to this point. You're probably going to make mistakes all the time, and that's okay!
It's easy to throw up a trashy, 1-5 page thin affiliate site. You'll probably make a few dollars, but is this really a long-term income stream? Are you really providing any kind of value to your visitors?

If you set out with a goal of providing great info, you will go far as an affiliate marketer. I'm sure this will apply to those that are creating their own products, as well. If you are providing information, or a good answer to a problem someone has, you're 75% of the way there. The other 25% is working hard in the correct direction.

On "taking action": People in the internet marketing world often say that "taking action" is the most important part of making money on the internet. While I don't entirely disagree with this, it is a complete waste of time to take action in the wrong direction. While it's important to avoid the "paralysis of analysis" trap that almost all new internet marketers fall into, it's equally important to make sure you understand what you're getting into before you start railroading down a track.

I'm posting this not only as a future reminder to myself to how far I've come, but also as a motivator for others. Work hard, and provide value, and you're 3/4 of the way there. I wish everyone here success, and I hope that I continue to have it, as well.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[4886549].message }}
    • Thank you, Matt. It's incredibly motivating to hear someone become successful in such short order.

You know what I love about this post.... HARD WORK!

If there was an easy button we'd all line up to press it. My only recommendation is that you seriously think about improving the profit margin per product. It took you 27 people saying yes to a product to make $100. Ouch! And 6 months is a long time to get to $100 per day.

Dude you have some friggin' persistence.

A lot of affiliate products are garbage and once you sell a garbage product you've lost a customer for life so be careful.

My hat goes off to you, but I'll be upset if you aren't making $200/day in the next month or so. Honestly, take it to the next level brother!

AND CONGRATS to your success! I love that feeling when you win and when other people win.

    Winning.
