Global or Local site optimization?

So the keyword has 20,000 global searches, but local (US) has about 8000.

I estimate I get about 2000 visits from the 8000 local. I assume that as I have my site set to preferred country as US.

I'm just thinking I should change it to preferred to nothing or global and try to get same percentage but from 20,000 not 8000 searches???

I dunno really why I selected US as target location, it is just a hobby site with some adsesne ads..Maybe it might be better?

Any experience on this topic, anyone?

For getting the perfect traffic per day or per month, you need to check the exact searches per month for that particular keyword.

To get about 2000 visits from 8000, your site has to be on 3rd or 4th position for that keyword or else it is difficult to reach 2000 traffic.

If your planning is to just monetize it from Adsense, then you should not limit it to just US traffic, it should go global and take a larger share of the market.

Global optimization uses the all the general SEO techniques discussed throughout this forum. Whereas the local optimization requires little effort in terms of on page optimization where you need to add Google map, local address and phone numbers for the site plus need to work on the off page techniques.

Go local at first, the global ranking will come naturally with time.

It really depends on the target audience of your product, if you have have global audience, you need to worry about the global searches.. ANd 8000 is a good local search.. is this exact match searches or broad match??

Keyuria, yes I'm about 3,4,5th position to get the 2000 hits from the 8000. Also yes I think I should go global.

omy123, yes this is 8K exact match, but my point is that global will be 20K and if I was in 3,4,5th position then maybe I will get say 5K visits each month, potentially doubling my adsense maybe, I don't know.

I just went to google UK, Australia, Tonga, Greenland and a whole stack more. My target phrase seems to be even in pos. 2 in some of these country specific google searches. It shows the - United States bit on the end.

Go global. You need as many visitors as possible. More traffic more clicks on ads. You need to find out whats more important for you at the moment. The quantity of the traffic or quality. If you are promoting a high commission product, you should go for quality and targeted campaigns. but if you are getting paid just for clicks on ads then try to get as many visitors as possible.

    IMO

Okay I might select in google webmasters the all countries box. Guess I will have to see what happens then.
