Why You need to take Twitter a lot more seriously

You know, for a long time, I have not really thought too much about Twitter. At present I have about 150 followers and I am on 5 separate lists i.e. 5 lists are following me.

Sure I have it as a part of my marketing mix. My blog posts get automatically tweeted and I have a 'follow me' link on my blog. But that's it. I have not given it much extra thought.

I have read one or two Twitter WSOs just to see if someone else has got the thing cracked and could help me see where it would best fit into what I am doing and, perhaps more to the point, why I should be concerned about it.

None of the information I gathered from the web and the WSOs really explained the power of the platform and many of the systems consisted of following as many people as you could in order to get reciprocal following. Apparently there are tools that do this kind of thing and you can ditch people after they follow you etc etc. None of that appeals to me.

But today, as sometimes happens to me, I relalised exactly why I need to take Twitter a lot more seriously.

I was doing a bit of keyword research. By the way, this is not my most favourite of tasks and if anyone knows of a good service, I would love to hear of it. However, I realised that my site has a number #2 position on page #1 for a 'time management' related term. So I decided to actually type 'time management' into Ms G.

I wasn't on page #1 for that term, but scanning the page I noticed something very interesting. The company I used to work for were on page #1 of Google!

Now, I genuinely was just about to draft a congratulatory email to my old colleague, the marketing manager, because that company, as good as it was (and still is) at what it does, actually normally has crap rankings in Google. I initially thought what a great job that he must have done.

But then ... it hit me!

The reason that the company was on page #1 was nothing to do with how well their SEO was getting at all. It was for the following two reasons:

1. I was logged into my Google account
2. I follow that company on Twitter

Now stay with me here, because this may not have struck you before either.

Sure you need pages that are optimised for the relevant terms, but you can get Twitter traffic without backlinks because you can clearly get page #1 listings in the SERPS for those people who follow you.

OK, now I know there will be people who might want to chip in and say stuff like: yeah, well that's only if they are logged into Google and that's true. But do you know something, with Google+ and the +1 button plus gMail, Adsense and a whole host of other reasons, my view is that more and more people ARE going to be logged into Google when they use the search engine in the future.

So, let it sink in if it hasn't already, and before today it simply hadn't for me, you need to work on getting a huge Twitter following because, in the future, the SERPS results for YOUR Twitter followers will be heavily influenced in YOUR favour.

But I digress.. While i think its great and all, i dont think it is that important. Let me explain my standing and to create a discussion here Will.

First, if we look at it, selling and marketing has much greater reach if we focus on people not in our usual reach.. As those who already are probably knows about it already, are already sold to. From my personal experience, going out and market out of my network has brought me the most amount of money.

I joined Twitter when DrMani first told about it when it was just in its infancy years ago and i am not exaggerating when i say that until this very day, i have not got any scaleable result using it.. In fact, even the founders have not got the right formula to make money out of it yet.. It has reach, it has people yes, but no concrete monetization plan.

Twitter is nothing more than a linkfarm IMHO if you look at it today.. and i am saying this even though i have a huge network in there.. Its not something that i focus on for my digital product business.

It's always good to hear alternative views. However, when I get a Twitter follower, it means that I potentially move up (actually not just move up, but move up considerably) in every search they make for a term for which I have a page - wow!

Granted I have a large site, but - still - wow!

Sounds like a great tip. I seem to have given up on Twitter lately because I never seemed to be getting any traffic and it seemed to just be a whole load of randomness and I suspected that no one was even reading my tweets anwyay...I can't say that I read anyone else's either!

I suppose with a good strategy like you said above it may just work out.

        Thanks

          Hi Nathan

The beauty of it is that your traffic will come from the SERPS and, as for monetisation, if you are using Adsense (for example), the more traffic you get the more you will bank - simple numbers.

Having used it since April 2007, I'm an 'early adopter' of Twitter.

And while I've not tweeted for SEO advantages before, but for human networking,
there's no ignoring the major role Twitter is having as an SEO tool today - and
ignoring it could be a costly mistake from that angle alone.

I will not be elaborating on this, however. Merely taking advantage

      All success

Twitter is a place to have direct communication with targeted customers. It is definitely not something to be taken for granted in my opinion.

I am up and down with twitter. It truly depends on who your followers are and how much attention you give them. If you send a @username will they respond and can you have a true conversation or are they just 'followers' and not interactors. Followers do nothing, unless they care about the company they follow.

As far as SERP is concerned, it definitely moves the company up when someone follows them and has them +1, but for the millions of people that don't follow them, there SERP ranking is the same where it had been before.

I definitely feel no matter what Social Media network you are in, you need to be Social. Unless a company is social, there is no reason to think twice about them again.

Will - I think you have a very valid point. Yet - I find it terrifying. I am not thrilled about the way we are being plugged into everything as we are.

Do you have the Better Privacy pluggin for your FF? Clear the LSO cookies (the ones that are planted on your machine and follow you around anywhere you go) - ditch all your history and run your crap cleaner. Now loggin to google and facebook. Then hit a few keywords in your search bar and browse without clicking on anything -- now go to shut your browser and look at the amount of LSO cookies that were planted just from 15 or twenty minutes of surfing. Spooky isn't it?

We might get linked into our friends all over the net and in ways it might enhance our marketing efforts. But I, for one, don't like it the least bit. I am not a fan of social engineering and I definitely don't like having my "browsing enhanced" or having records kept about what I am doing and looking at online. There are way to many liberties taken with my info and too much control being exhibited for my taste.

Yes, I agree that it is getting a bit like Big Brother, but as marketers, this is something we can certainly use to our advantage as I have tried to illustrate above. I can see that you 'get it', but even some of the responses above show that many still don't.

This realisation was my epiphany. I can now see not only why I need to take Twitter a lot more seriously, but also the power of the platform as a viral tool - something that had previously escaped me.

Good post, but I didn't understand how following that company on Twitter made it page one for you? I didn't think Twitter sent any information like that to Google, nor Google reading information like that from Twitter? I would understand it if you had visited that company's website on your Google account but I don't think following a company on Twitter influences its page rank to you when logged into Google+. Correct me if I'm wrong?

      Hi Matt

I have never heard anyone else talk of this, but yes from the above, I can say with confidence that the only reason that my previous company appeared on page #1 of G for that term was because of the combination of two factors: I was logged into my Google account and I was following that person on Twitter.

So, the lesson is that as people will, in the future, actually be logged into their Google accounts more often i.e. it is likely to be the way people will work, Google will be presenting SERPS that are more relevant to that individuals preferences and we can be sure from what I have illustrated that Twitter will definitely be a factor.

Now, if you can think about the viral effect of retweets and (inferred) Facebook likes, you should be able to see that you will be gaining more and more traffic based upon the social reaction to your site/posts/articles etc.

      Cheers,

      Will

I find Twitter works great for building relationships. I connect with strategic partners and clients through it.

It also lets me find people looking for help that I can provide.

hey great post.. it's gotten me thinking. i generally use twitter just to help others and building relationships.. i put out occasional tips and tricks they could implement with their accounts (twitter & FB).. i dont try selling anything through twitter (although i am an internet marketer) but if anyone has ideas on how to use the following that i have (currently a measly 32 ) to generate income or a free, ethical way to increase followers in a targetted manner, i'm all ears.. or rather all eyes as the case may be
