I'm German today and PayPal won't like it!

I'm in a hotel today (in the UK) and I'm using their in-room wifi service. Very good it is too.

It's with T-Mobile which is a German company.

When I visit the PayPal home page, PayPal must think I'm in Germany and is showing me the German version of the page.

I'm definitely not going to log in because last year when I was in Spain PayPal put my account on hold until I got back home and could confirm my identity from my office phone number. Their system flagged up the difference with the ip address I use to log in normally. I guess they don't take holidays there!

Anyway, just a heads up for travellers.

Cheers,

Neil

I always leave my computer on at home, then use logmein so it looks as though I'm working from home when I need to login to paypal etc

Works fine because you are logging in from your own computer

That's a good idea Kim and another step along this never-ending road of user-friendly remote access.

Based on last year's experience when I was in Spain, I'm definitely doing to get it this year before I head off again.

Apart from anything else, it gets round the problem of having to transfer essential files such as Outlook data etc to my laptop which is always a bit of a pain.

      Cheers,

Kim could you run through that again with a little more detail?

Do I have to buy a PC (as opposed to the Macs I use) to do this?

Lucky you. It was very, very annoying when it did happen and PayPal simply would not budge until I got home and could call them from my registered phone number.

This is one these "I smoked all my life and I didn't get ill" situations.

Well if you setup remote desktop on your Windows PC please do not use the standard port 3389 since all port scanners scan common ports like these.
I always prefer to setup a vpn connection and go to my laptop/pc from there.

I assumed Kim's recommendation was a VPN solution.

Anyway, I will look into it when I get back.

I just went to the webpage of logmein and saw it was free
Cant acutally tell if the software is ok since I've never used it.
Since I'm a network- / system engineer I (most times) use solutions
that are already implemented. (if it's Microsoft based)

So what I would do is:

-Get a router with the option to setup a VPN connection to it.
      If you don't have already.
-Enable Remote Desktop (Windows XP Pro only!) and perhaps some vista versions.
-Give your pc a static ip address and you're done

But maybe Kim's option is more simple...
If you need help or more explenation just PM me.

      Have a great vacation!

      Dennis

P.S. - If you think about buying a new router, please look at the WOL (Wake On LAN) function.
This option allows you to remotely turn on your computer so you can shut it down when you are going on vacation!

    Neil,

Is this a common thing with PayPal?

Tina and I have been working together for a couple of years now with no problems.

I live in the UK. and Tina's in the US. and we both access the same account regularly.

    Dave.

      Hello Dave

I live in the UK. and Tina's in the US. and we both access the same account regularly.
From what they told me last year, their systems would not flag this because it's your regular pattern of use. Their systems pick up unusual activity. For example, they told me that they had put my account on hold because they suspected a 3rd party had accessed my account. And on further questioning, they told me that this was because of the IP address used to access the account while I was in Spain - a Vodafone Spain mobile broadband account.

    Neil,

I traveled a lot in 2008, different countries. before I travel, I always sent a help ticket from my paypal account, and told them that I would travel to this&that countries, and I would check my account from hotels, please do not hold/suspend my accounts during this period. I also told them that please leave a notes in my account, so all operators can see it and will not make trouble with my account.

I do not know whether it does matter or not, but until now, I never had any problems with my account.

maybe you can try it too.

      Hi David

I asked them about that last year and they would not guarantee it would stop them putting a hold on the account, probably because it happens automatically and they have a defined and inflexible procedure for getting the account off hold.

It is still a good idea though.

I don't blame them for any of this - it's obvious why they need this sort of protection.

      Cheers,
