Wanting to write about the news related to my niche

How would I go about this? Can you do it or will you get slapped by copyright claims etc. My website is drug related niche to do with addiction, harm reduction and drug knowledge. There are always plenty of news stories on these topics how would you put these on your website?

This is not legal advice at all - but I think as long as you use the generic names of the drugs you should be safe.

Congratulations - you just won today's bimbo button award.

DO NOT EVER STEAL your material.

You can re-write news, adding a few facts about an incident and then some background about the problem or the particular drug. As far as arrests, busts, etc - you can get those right off a police scanner or police records. Some states have lists of arrests right online - arrests are also listed in newspapers. Public facts about an incident are not copyrighted - the way the story is written, interviews, etc. are though - so just take the basic facts of an arrest, or of a problem and write your own story about them. You can also make calls to people and interview them about a story yourself. Police stations can only tell you so much - but what about a store owner who has been robbed once or more due to a local drug problem?

Simply put - if you want to write news - act like a journalist.

You're going to have to do a lot of reading on each thing you report. And like newman said, just use the generic or scientific name the the drug you're reporting on.

you could set up a google alert for the keywords you choose, and select news only. Then just rewrite the stories in your own way.

Rewrite the articles in your own words. Other than that, you could be sued for copyright infringement.
