Hello,

Yes, I am back on the forum... That may be a blessing or a curse to some of you... but I am here, and have tried to start with a post, that even Bill Platt (TPW) would be proud of... Did I do well? I don't know, does he still do those funky posts about title's? Those particularly interested me, but I'm getting off topic here..

As many of you know... I am a big fan of Blackberry, and I recently switched back to a Blackberry from Android... And decided, to take a vacation for 8 days in August...

And well, I went to one of those places, still on earth, that didn't have an internet connection... So I decided to take 8 days off from running my business...

Oh boy!

See, what I forgot to do, was keep my list up to date with things going on while I was there... I wasn't prepared with pre loaded affiliate links for launches... So when I went through my daily routine of mailing, I realized... That "oh crap", the Aweber website isn't going to let me mail this from my phone...

So, what ended up happening is that I didn't mail my list for 8 Days... Which brings me to the so-called "List Disconnect"... You see, the Internet Marketing niche, among other niches - is a fast pace niche, people in this niche.... Forget you.

What I mean by that, is they are being flooded by e-mails by A, B, C, D, E, F (you get the picture) marketers... Every single day... I know, I get at least 5-10 e-mails within a few hours... And I don't subscribe to many lists...

So, if you say take an 8 or whatever day break... They begin to forget WHO YOU ARE, when you mail... EX, there are certain people that I ALWAYS open their e-mails... You all will know that P.M. is someone that I will always open his mailing list e-mails.... But if PM didn't mail me as he usually does (once a week)... and say he took a 10 week break, I would almost forget who he is, and not open the e-mail...

That's why it's important to make sure your list, is getting the e-mails as usual... Otherwise you create a disconnect... And to be honest, you lose people... People lose interest fast in this niche.

So, the lesson... If your going somewhere, on vacation... The Aweber follow up feature is useful...

Dang Caleb....d'oh!

Yeah...it's a lot to remember but you always have to try and take care of any loose ends before you go off the grid otherwise it'll be hard to enjoy your vacay.

Sorry Caleb, you don't get a list disconnect after just 8 days. It takes a lot longer than that to forget someone who was sending you emails on a regular basis.

Why do you say that you had a disconnect anyways. Did a response to a mailing drop lower than usual?

Most people on a list are on a ton of lists and wouldn't even notice that you haven't sent an email to them in 8 days.

I know a week is a long time in politics, but is 8 days really so much with your lists? Mine are always loaded up well in advance anyway, I admit ... but an 8-day break wouldn't bother me. I think. How often are you mailing these lists, may I ask?

Not sure about the 8 days thing. Actually (with my list) my emails tend to be a little
more valuable when I don't mail as much.

George Brown only mails out to his list like once every 1-2 months and I open every
one of them, because he usually has something important to say. So it depends on how you treat the list. If they like ya, they won't forget about you after 8 days.

So who are you?

Yes I think it is good practice to always add what you send to your list to the autoresponder too, then you have a stream of content for new subscribers.

I didn't essentially mean that they forget about you after 8 days... I just mean with less consistent mailings, I lead to not expect it, and they aren't rushing to open your e-mail...

On the other end of this is the fact that 8 days fly by in peoples lives and that is simply not a long time at all. Most people will be far more upset about missing their weekly sitcom than they will be about an email.

I usually take interest in reading Paul Myers' emails, but I have no idea how frequent they come. I just know when they do there is usually something of value to them. But honestly if I don't hear from him in a month or so, I won't lose a wink of sleep. So you shan't be thinking you are so big in someone's life that they are waiting for your broadcasts - at least from a marketing perspective I feel that is simply blue-skyish.

Conversely, I got a broadcast email for GSh today, who took about 90 seconds to write a promotional broadcast for someone else's product. From the few words he wrote there was clearly a disconnect with his knowledge of the product and there was absolutely no thoughtful recommendation involved. It was simply a money-grab from his list.

Caleb, disconnect is a much more REAL problem if you are sending your people content not related to who you are, or how they came about to know you. Same thing goes for sending out affiliate promotions that basically say - here check this out.

Do NOT broadcast for the sake of too much time passing. If you have nothing of pertinent value to offer them, 8 days off will be much better for YOU and your list, more than you understand at this point.

  If you've branded yourself in your readers minds and have built a reputation for sending out interesting, readable emails, then a gap of 8 days is nothing. They will still be there waiting and happy to hear from you when you get back.
  
  Of course, if your emails are as boring, hyped up and hard sell as most (not saying yours is, of course) then they might just see the 8 days as a welcome break.

  How many mails did your list miss in those 8 days? Personally, unless it is part of a course or something... whenever I start getting mails multiple times a week.. off they go.
  
  Quality, not quantity. It might depend on the niche and audience though (not the IM niche) but I have never reached better results with a higher send rate than say once a week. About twice a month seems to be my sweet spot. I find it easier to accumulate good content and get adequate conversions with less risk of triggering the delete/unsubscribe reflex.
  
  It is very easy to dilute the power one projects... and very hard to accumulate a quality audience. Less is more in my book.

  With people who mail me that often I go through the following cycle:
  
  1. Subscribe to list
  2. Open first few emails out of curiosity
  3. Notice that list owner is emailing a lot
  4. Lose trust in list owner
  5. Open emails with attitude of "What's that d*ck emailing me now?"
  6. Laugh at the stupidity of the list owner while feeling sorry for people who get sucked in
  7. Get bored and unsubscribe

This is very interesting, Caleb.

I've known this phaenomenon very well from offline direct mailings; cycles are much longer there, but a break of a couple of weeks could result in a list being "dead" in certain industries.

For Emails, I've just experienced this with breaks of couple of weeks/months; but 8 days really seems to be a short time.

Maybe you "burned" your list before, mailing too often, as frankm pointed out?
