Doing your Research and A Few Questions

Hello all,

When you decide to promote a product, what research do you do to figure out that this is a something you want to promote? And if it's something you haven't used yourself, what research do you do to know what angle when promoting said product?

My next question is I'm relatively new to IM and I've done a search for "newbie" threads but haven't found anything to answer this question:

With the various avenues to take to promote things (PPC vs Facebook vs POF vs adsense vs CPA networks), how does one beginning in the vast world of IM know where to start? Some of the more experienced members, what did you do to start out?

Just to give some personal background on what I've done in IM, I was doing affiliate marketing for a dating program (how to increase your chances with women type program) and I was using POF to promote it (the ad would re-direct to their landing page and I could track it). I'm kinda starting over and wanted to see where you guys started and what you did.

One recent course on CPM marketing using paid advertising, (Profit-101) suggested starting out with Facebook ads, in part just due to it's simplicity. He also suggests in this course to not attempt full time IM until you have 6-12 months income saved up.

(Some have suggested this whole forum is for newbies)

Well, the first thing you have to think about is.. do you want to promote someone else's product? I mean, do you want to spend money to promote someone else's product? Is there something you can create on your own and sell it that is completely unique? There's no point in creating competition for yourself by diving into affiliate programs not knowing what you're doing.

And you especially don't want to start blowing money on PPC ads or any other kind of advertising unless you are sure you can't get the sales on your own.

My only advice would be to keep your money in your pocket and learn how to advertise without spending money. If your product is good enough it will sell itself. If it's ok you can talk your way to sales. If it's worthless then you'll need PPC but then at that point you have to ask yourself.. why am I selling this?

Hi Innovator3 and welcome to the forum.

I would buy the product first and then try it out for a month or so if I like it I promote it.

And if it's something you haven't used yourself, what research do you do to know what angle when promoting said product?
I don't bother promoting products I haven't used. I tried it when I first started but I just found it made it too hard to create good content to use to promote the products. Also I want to know that the product is good before I promote it around the net.

My advice here is to try all of the methods above in small dose's (dont go crazy with paid methods) and track each method. When you find one that works drop the others and ramp up the one that works best.

Do you really try out a product first? What if it's something like a dating site or a nutrition product (ie. fat loss)? Certainly you can't try out every product you want to promote so how does one go about doing their research on how to promote a product?
