Is this a good way to package a multimedia ebook?

Hi gang,

Quick question: I'm trying to create a multimedia ebook that would include several sound files throughout the book. I don't have Acrobat, which I understand has the capability to embed the audio directly, and so I've been considering alternative methods. So far I've had no luck finding a reliable but affordable software solution, so I'm thinking of alternatives. I'd like to know what you think of my solution, and/or if you have any better ideas.

My solution: package the ebook in a zipped folder. The folder would contain the book as a .pdf, and a folder, called something like "Sound Files." The .pdf would contain links to the individual sound clips via RELATIVE paths, so that, as long as the user kept the files in that structure, they would work.

I realize that many people probably throw all their ebooks into a single directory, which would break those links and make this inconvenient. However, those people could still access the sound clips on their own, wherever they do store them. (And I'd make sure everything was clearly labeled). Still, this seems to be the cleanest, most convenient way to work it for everyone.

(I should add that I'd rather not link to online sound files, whether on something like youtube or my own server. I realize that those links would never "break." However, I'd like for the package to be self-contained and not rely on an internet connection).

Any thoughts? How do others do something similar?

Thanks!

Just my opinion, but when you create a product, it's best to think how the end-user will act. If you believe many customers will throw the ebook into a single directory, rendering the audio links useless, then don't do it that way. Frustrated customers won't buy from you again.

Make it easy for the customer, even if it's not the way you'd prefer to do it. Hosting the audio on iTunes or on your server with links to them throughout the book would be easier for those who purchase the book.

      Hi Linda,

Thanks for your thoughts. I absolutely agree that the customer's needs should be put above my own when possible, and I appreciate the reminder. I'm going to think about the question of what the market would most prefer for a while, then make a decision.

On that note, it still strikes me that the most ideal format would be one that included everything in one self-contained "offline" file. Was I correct in assuming that there's no practical way to do this without Acrobat?

PS - I had one more thought: what about setting it up as a website, then saving the entire "site" as a static download? I know that there would be the same question about whether the market would prefer this, but, that aside, is this ever done, and is it possible?

There are probably countless ways to deliver your files. I typically store files off-site with Amazon AWS and create video-based membership sites using Optimize Press, linking to the video files at Amazon. I'm not familiar enough with Acrobat to answer your question, but I'm sure someone out there will.

You'll just need to find the best method for you and your market.

Why not just have the files as downloads from your server?
Put links at the start and end of the books.
That's how I sold video versions of my books and seems to work well.
If they find value in your book then they will download the audio files.
