I just hit a BONANZA!

Excuse me folks....I've been an "entroopeneer" for most of my life! I've recently been working on "Mobile Marketing" stuff because I know that "mobile" is WHERE IT WILL BE! In the coming yrs "Decktops" will be gone, replaced with "Hand-Held" devices that can provide ANY..."Info" you want, simply by clicking a "piece of plastic"....IN Your Hand!

So...with that in mind...I "put my mind into the body of someone driving into my town"! (Roseburg, Oregon)

These people are called "Tourists" or...."TRAVELERS"....Traveling about our STILL GREAT Country called "America"....and....when they get tired of driving....they start looking for a place to Stay for the evening.

So....because most of these "Travelers" know there are Motels/Hotels available...all across this "Still Great" land....(and because MOST of these
Travelers" have a "Mobile Device"...aka "Cell Phone"..."Smart Phone".... "Android'...etc) ....they "Dial Up" ..."Motels in Roseburg" (or whatever the Town they're coming to is named)...and...guess what?....up on their Small Screen...comes a Listing of Motels/Hotels.

Well....what if, on their Phone Screen..... there also appeared an Ad for .... "Traveler Tokens" - Get Special "Traveler" Discounts at local Motels and Bars and Restaurants!"...CLICK HERE!

And....let's say some of these "Travelers" already have reservations at a Motel/Hotel or...they simply decide to stop in my town and look for a place to stay.....and....when they arrive at the Front Desk to "Check-In"...they see a Display...sitting on the Front Desk (next to the Check-In Clerk) that says...."Use Your Mobile Phone to Get Your ........ "TRAVELER TOKENS"
(Special Deals at Local Bars & Restaurants!)
SCAN THIS CODE! (where a large QR Code is Displayed)

Now....what if YOU were the one offering these "Traveler Tokens" (or some other kind of Discount Coupons) ....to local Hotels/Motels....Restaurants, Gift Shops...Realtors, local attractions, etc? Do YOU think you could find 1 or 2 Motels/Hotels or Restaurants or Gift Shops, etc.....that "Might" be willing to Pay YOU to be IN a Program that could bring "Travelers"...INTO their place of business?

So....understand 3 things about Travelers coming into YOUR Town... TODAY;

1) They HAVE a "Mobile Device" with them
2) They are HUNGRY
3) They HAVE MONEY and are willing to spend it on a Meal (or other "stuff")

Thus....do you think that local Restaurants, Gift Shops, Motels/Hotels, Attractions, Realtors...etc....would be interested in a program that can BRING IN TRAVELERS...TO THEIR BUSINESS?

Sorry....I'm NOT selling anything here! I'm simply sharing an "idea" I came up with ("TRAVELER TOKENS"..... that Travelers can get on their Mobile Device) .....that is possibly going to make little ol' me....a LOT of moolah, just from a "simple Idea"....and the willingness to take my "idea" and show potential clients...
What it is
and
How it works
and
What it costs for them to Participate
and
...they JUMP IN (For ME anyway)

When I showed this "Program' to some of my local Motels (we don't have Hotels here)...and restaurants and Gift Shops....they went "Bananas"!

Thus....I thought some of you folks might like to see how a "Simple Idea" was conceived and put together (with less that $50 "investment").....is able to bring in a HUGE Return and provide a GREAT SERVICE to small, local businesses.

Thanks for reading,

Don Alm...."Idea Guy"...Roseburg, Oregon

Yes, we have mobile devices. But we think QR codes are silly and we never, ever scan them. Maybe if you were offering a free meal. But nothing's really free. Everyone knows that instinctively.

Yes, we're usually hungry and we have money of course but we don't like taking the risk of eating at an unfamiliar place. This is why chain restaurants are popular. Eating in unfamiliar places is *all* about risk. Familiarity will always trump the prospect of getting 25% off on a meal. (And if it's a good place to eat, why are they offering coupons?)

Motels and hotels are always pimping for local restaurants. It's unclear what value you're bringing to the table.

So basically, what you're saying is "you don't scan qr codes and don't like trying new restaurants therefore nobody does???"

I'm sure if you take a step back and look at you're statement from a more neutral perspective you'll see the fallacies.

My only concern with this idea is that when people are traveling, they tend to make rash and impulse decisions.

"OOO! Let's go to _____"! rather than looking up and objectifying their decisions.

I do think that it would be an easy sell to clients in markets like yours though.

Don, great idea but desktops won't be going away. hehe

Here's just one of the myriad reasons why.

Online PC gaming is MONSTER huge and growing at incredible rates and as such Major retailers like Coke, Pepsi, have found a new medium for what's I coin as virtual world passive marketing. They are now paying BIG bucks to have their products placed strategically inside the game world environment.

They ain't spending this money because desktops will be a thing of the past in a few years, trust me.

But again your creative juices are always seem to be flowing so keep them coming!

QR codes are huge! I agree!
Just wondering if you have ever scanned one Don?
The reason I ask is because you don't have a smart phone.
If you scan the ones on your envelope, you will see your name and address once scanned.

I don't deny that Qr codes rock and one day may rule, but not everyone is privy yet to this technology? If I went to a hotel (or Wal-Mart) and the only way I could get a deal, and didn't have a smart phone, was to scan a code...... I would be more than pissed!
Wal-Mart is said to appeal to the low end spenders of the World. Can you imagine the line at the customer service desk for people wanting in on this deak that didn't have a smart phone? The discount might be for a $1 off a $5 item but they will stand in line for an hour to save that $1. Wal-Mart is not this stupid, my meter is going off as well! Love your ideas but no need to fabricate a story to sell an idea that you are not selling anyway.
Geez, you'd think a guy whos has been pounding the streets as long as you would have a bit thicker skin.

If I have time later tonight, I will show how I have implimented QR codes onto business cards ( an idea I first tweeked from Don)

Well, there are masses and then there are masses.
I do scan QR codes... I think they're cool. I would take advantage of offers in QR codes.

I do visit unknown (to me) restaurants. I don't like chains. I prefer to try out new things and QR codes to try out a new restaurant would entice me to try out a restaurant. Same with lodging and tourist activities.

A few points to the doubters.
    1. Businesses don't understand all about seo, etc etc. They understand advertising, discounts and travel/tourist dollars. Speak their language.
    2. QR codes I had a Realtor tell me her clients would never do that, they can't even text. How many people are buying an Iphone 4s right now that already have an iphone? How many people have a G-slate(me), Dell Streak or Android device. Most can and will scan with a proper call to action.
    3. Don't think they'll scan? Put a short url under the code. Trade the Motel some of the ad cost for placement in the guest book in the room. In the book in the room place a one sheeter with the QR + Url + some printed coupons in case they are traveling with a dumb phone. Cover all the bases, Dan Kennedy said strong call to action plus multiple ways to respond.
    4. If you can sell this will work. If you can't hire someone who can.

Also an idea: Trade some of the ad cost with your favorite eatery for $10 or $20 gift certificates, not coupons. Then call some service guys/gals, tuneup, brake, tire, auto parts, detail shop, RV wash, massage, hairsalon, nail shop, shoe store, etc. My wife buys shoes in every town. I bought shoes in Odessa, Ukraine, go figure. Anyway call the owner/manager offer a free lunch, no strings. Use your gift certificates to pay. After eating and talking, show them the directory(on your G-Slate) with eateries, bars, nightclubs etc. Offer the rate. Tell them you will only take one Hair Salon exclusive. Make a friend, make a sale.

As far as the "desktops are going away" idea, I think it's a bit out there, too.

While mobile devices will keep gaining popularity, most people will almost always opt to look at a huge 18 inch+ monitor instead of a little 3 inch one.

Now that said- it probably won't be too long before they have USB ports on all phones and you just hook up devices to that and sit it on your desk while it's hooked up to your mouse, keyboard and monitor.

But if a mobile device is sitting on your desk- is it now a desktop?

BAM I just blew your mind.

Most people who aren't in the marketing biz, don't think the way we do. Call them mass whatever, most people are too busy thinking about other things.

Also, Desktops are not going to be eliminated but yes they are changing. Those iPhones & Androids everyone says are hard to see things on a 3-4in displays will have Holographic screens soon. Screens that can be embedded in our glasses, or just pop up in air to show us a bigger picture. Desktops, mobile devices, Tv's, will all be Holographic. So, it is completely possible that in the coming years (as Don states) that we will be able to access any & everything from our Mobile Devices. (without squinting)

  • Hacker says 'Don't scan that QR code!'

    By Carlton Purvis

QR codes, part of popular marketing strategies created to engage mobile device users, have become a vector for malware that hackers could use to remotely access all of the data in a person's phone and record their every move through pictures and audio, according to cybersecurity researchers. And there's no way to know once a device is infected.

I agree - better fully research how QR actually works but there is always a anti virus solution - whatever they try we can defend - im sure Google would give results - i mean the whole app store from apple is built from that

Yes, it is a brilliant idea. And yes, it is already being done.

Look for a AAA applet for either your Android or iPhone. My Android Market app is showing 5 AAA apps at the moment.

This will prove to be a major money-maker for the savvy LOCAL business marketer.

It isn't going away. Probably ever. It will just look different.

QR codes, like everything, will end up being "vetted" by someone like Trend Micro, AVG or through a security certificate or registry.

Your phone will eventually check the approved list and warn you before or during the install process and will also set a restore point, just in case.

One thing is for sure... People are not giving up their toys and discounts any time soon.

    "Don't scan that qr code"
True - although there are possibilities for people to get visits to a malicious link through email marketing too....

I prefer it when qr codes display a url as well and I've noticed many qr scanning apps will have a "this code wants to do xyz...." screen before it acts.

I think we'll see the better qr reader software build in safeguards - let's face it if you install the wrong app on your phone you can be compromised too. Malware has been a problem in the android market in the past. So does this mean people should avoid creating apps for smartphones?

I don't think that it being used for bad things is necessarily an argument for not using qr codes.
