You're probably better off using Wordpress, but it's a hard question to answer without knowing your goals.

For example, if you're simply throwing up a sales page, I'd just use a template. On the other hand, if you want to build a content site and have affiliate links, adsense ads, and more, then Wordpress is probably the better and easier option.

What is the end result you're looking to achieve?

Like everybody said, use Wordpress. It'll be easy to install and set-up. I highly recommend looking at the themes that ithemes offers.

In particular, check out their Builder series. Builder rocks hard!

    Use Wordpress:

    1. For a tips website, you will be adding content on a regular basis, and it is much easier to do it with a blog.

    2. You will want to encourage comments by users and interact with them. Again, it is easier with a blog.

    3. Blogs are easier to rank in the search engines.

The links (you need contact, privacy, about us) should be at the bottom of the page so they don't distract your users.

As far as the actual structure of the homepage, determine what information you will have and look at some other sites to see what you like. There are a lot of people in the WF who will set it up for you for under $100

    Hope this helps

    Hope this hellps

Well if you just want to throw the content than obviously wordpress is the better option which can be made powerful with the help of some addons and plug ins. If you know some CSS than you can easily customize the themes for the better ads visibility.

Free templates for websites look like free templates for websites, but if you want one, Google free website template.

      True009,

A lot of people suggest using WordPress to build a WEBSITE because it is easier than trying to design a traditional website from scratch, even if you use a template. You really need to understand the basics of HTML when designing a website.

You can use WordPress to look like a regular website simply by creating a "page" in WP that you want for the home page. Then in the WP reading settings you can select that page to be your home page. Then when people go to your site, they land on that page rather than the blog posts.

Any theme (even the one that comes with WP) can do that.

Or you can look for themes that have special home pages (like the ones from Studio Press).

WordPress sites can more easily be optimized for the search engines either through the theme or through SEO plugins.

WordPress was originally created as a blogging platform but it has grown into a full blown CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (CMS).

To use or not to use WordPress really depends on your end goal.

Since you stated that you wanted to provide a travel tips site, I would agree with the others here in that WordPress would be the way to go.

There are plenty of ready-made themes that look nothing like a blog and are fully customizable.

For all of my offline business clients, we use WordPress to create their entire static "website" by creating PAGES and then also create their own built-in blog using POSTS and categories to organize those posts. We also open up the comments on the POSTS, include sharing plugins, incorporate their facebook and twitter, Google Maps, etc. It also allows for easy training since it is widely supported and training videos are in abundance.

I really couldn't imagine why you would want to use your time in developing a site from scratch with html, php and css when you could better spend your time focusing on creating unique content, backlinking and promotion, all things that would be making you money.

Hope this helps and best of luck...Leah

You definitely want to build it on Wordpress.
The standard pages you will need are:
    Privacy Policy
    Terms of Service
    Contact Us
    Site Map
    About Us

You then add regular content through your Posts.

There are a ton of free videos at Wordpress or just go to Fiverr.com and get someone to build it for you for $5

    *use wordpress,
*either create a static home page describing the site with some nice pics, or just use posts for the home page
*include the obligatory contact, terms, about us, sitemap pages
    *add posts regularly

Wordpress is simpler and faster in most cases and offers a lot of plugins and themes you can use.

    Hi there True900,

Use wordpress. As simple as that.

Download a free or purchases a premium theme and create articles for it.

Wordpress is simple, easy and effective.

    You won't regret it,

Even if you know html and php, these can be used to enhance the Wordpress CMS. As already stated, Wordpress is not a blogging software anymore, it has grown and evolved into a content management system that absolutely rocks.

Sure you could built a html Website, but in my opinion there are many limitations, especially for your purposes. Html Websites still have their place for certain projects but for what you want to do, stick to Wordpress and your journey will be much smoother.

I'd definitely use Wordpress if I were you.
Like many other said, it's a very easy way to get your website going, especially if it's your first. You just install it, look for a proper theme, customize it a little bit, and you have your site.
Don't worry because you want a website and not a blog. You can easily customize WP in order to not have posts, but pages. It's as simple as that. There are a lot of websites running on Wordpress today, it's quite surprising how many!
