Backup of Wordpress Sites

I'm not familiar with that plugin specifically, but you'll want to make sure that it's backing up your database at the least (I'm assuming it must).

I backup my own databases directly - and in the event of a total crash that's enough to recover everything (although there is some work involved in recovering it).

All your content (posts, Pages, comments) and settings are stored in the database.

Your custom themes, plugins and uploaded files (images, video etc.) are in the wp-content folder.

Backing up the database and the wp-content folder should be sufficient.

My manual backups also have a copy of the wp-config.php and .htaccess file.

Everything else (i.e. the WP core files) can be replaced from the wordpress.org site.

I've never properly understood the difference between "backing up" files, and saving all my work to a hard drive extension. So if my computer crashes everything's on the extension... surely?

Someone's going to tell me I'm being hugely naive now...

Usually, when we refer to 'backing up' your live site, it means to have a copy of it on your computer in case the server gets hacked; your site gets hijacked by a hacker etc.

Whether you keep another copy of your HD on an external HD - that's entirely up to you, although, I have to agree, it's a wide thing to do.

In the case of a WP site everybody should have saved their:
- database
- custom themes and plugins
- uploaded media

as a "backup of the site"... just in case, if anything bad happens on the server. And yes, as a precaution, you could (should?) have a copy of the copy

Is it better to "copy and paste" all the files via FTP client as a backup?

I use a WP Plugin for my backups but never really educated myself on how to restore, if a problem arises...

I use a software called WP Twin to back my blogs. With WP Twin it only takes me 2-3 minutes to backup the blog without having the trouble of backing up site files and database separately.

I highly recommend it if you run large number of sites.

There is a paid plugin, Backup Buddy, that saves a complete clone of your WP site to your harddrive. I stopped using it as it got too expensive for my liking.

I use a free WP Database Backup plugin that backs up pretty much everything.

If you want to make sure that you really have everything including all customisation, graphics and whatever, you can do a manual backup via your cpanel. From the root directory of your site, you can save a full zip file of the site to your hard disk. Once you have this and your regular, automated database backup, you should be safe.

Good suggestions here, but I would try a different angle. How difficult it is for you to restore the website with your current setup? Did you try it?
Next, how much control do you have? Say your theme got hacked and you only need to restore a few files? Your method of choice should allow such granularity.
And last - how many sites do you have to babysit? One of my associates runs close to 600 self-hosted sites with only 2 executives - managing individual plugins and DIY backup over FTP (with the potential security risks involved) simply does not cut it.
In short, no simple answer - good you at least have the backup, now start assessing what is at risk and how you can mitigate that.

I'd recommend Backup Buddy. You can schedule full backups on a recurring basis. It will even set the backup files to a remote location like your s3 or Dropbox. It downloads full backups too, not just your db. Restoring a site is very very easy to do to, I've tested it

I use backup buddy (paid plugin). As mentioned you need both the SQL database and the contents of your wp-content directory in order to have a full backup. Most backup plugins only backup the SQL database which is fine if that is all you lost. But all the images, plugins, themes, css files, etc are in the wp-content directory so you want to make sure your backup solution includes those as well.

Try Wordpress Duplicator.

It's a free plugin. It clones your wordpress site completly. You can basically restore everything including your personal settings and pictures ,etc.

I use the BackWPup plugin, which is free but has the ability to schedule different types of backup jobs and have them sent to more than one location. I use amazon s3 since a full backup is too big for email, but there is also dropbox and a few other options.

Even if your backups are scheduled to automatically run, you should check periodically to make sure there haven't been any errors. Mine seems to have had a problem moving from 2011 to 2012! I ran it again and now it seems fine. Go figure.

So are these backup plugins also cloning plugins. I want to be able to setup one WP site with all of my plugins and other basic stuff and then install the site and then clone it so I can install multiple copies and fill out the rest of the stuff afterwards.

Is there any problem doing this with free plugins? Would they have to have some special licence or would it likely be different for each plugin?

I guess that I would need a multisite licence for any pay plugins to do this using them, or a developer licence if I wanted to sell any of the sites?

If I have a single site plugin licence, do most allow you to upgrade them or would I have to buy a full new multisite or developer licence?

I use the "WordPress Backup to Dropbox" plugin. Backs up the database and all the WP files to your Dropbox account. WordPress Backup to Dropbox
