How do you research your niche?

I've got to admit, I don't have the first clue what all you people are on about when you talk about doing the research, finding out what people want etc

I'm going to throw this up as an example and maybe someone can chip in with advice.

Niche - MMA (mixed martial arts)

So how would you research this niche and find out what people want?

Now i'm not asking for all the answers. Not at all, but i'd just like a few pointers ie

1) Join a MMA forum and ask people what they would like
2) Do google search of a few keywords and look at top websites (find out what their selling)

Cheers

Fin - You seem to be on the right path all on your own. Those were all good ideas. You can also read the forums related to your niche, not just join them. Also, do searches in Google like:

"how do i" mixed martial arts

The results show all kinds of questions people have about the topic. This gives you insight into what people want to know about the topic, how the questions might vary at different levels of experience, and what websites people are using to get this information today.

From there, I'd be taking some notes about the questions that come up the most and then start to outline a segment of that market about which I could specialize. Taking on ALL of the MMA related topics could be too much to start with which is why I tend to find one segment first and then expand into other segments as I start to gain ground.

For instance, there were lots of questions around how to get started in mma and so that might be one area in which you could specialize. There were also questions having to do with "training tips" and "fighting tips" and those could each be separate segments.

You could also try doing some searches in Yahoo answers to see what people are asking.

I'd like to second sojourn and recommend focusing on the people just getting into MMA as they will be the easiest to find their pain points.

I think the best way is to use Google keyword tool . Find keywords with x,xxx(or more) monthly searches [EXACT].

Joining forums and doing keyword research, which you already mentioned, is good. I also like to use MNF (micro niche finder) to give me a better feel for keywords.

I will look at websites lower on the totem pole, not just the top sites. There are lots of sites in many niches that are not highly ranked (sites that are new, poor on and off-page SEO, etc.) but those sites can still provide a wealth of information.

Look in Amazon to see what, if anything, people are buying in your niche. Check out the Dummies book selections, as well (Martial Arts For Dummies :Book Information - For Dummies). The market research is already done for you (to a degree). This might give you some ideas.

It's not enough to want it... you have to want it enough.
