Need help with email marketing

Hi,
I have been on the forum for a few months, but I am still a newbie and I need help.
I have been list building for a while through various methods and have purchased many WSOs along the way, but can not turn a profit.
My marketing methods have been refined over the months and I feel like I am offering good content to my list, not just selling to them. I never try to sell stuff that I do not own or have not researched well. I try to be personable, friendly and positive, but nobody buys anything from me - ever!
Even the 'I will build your list and make your money back' offers do not work for me.
I know that I made a lot of mistakes early on, like every newbie, but now I am starting to think that the whole idea is somehow beyond me!
I am looking for some solid advice, or a good working relationship with an experienced marketer who can help me out.

Thanks for your time,
Gary.

One suggestion I have is to specifically target buyers to join your list whenever possible. This seems so obvious but a lot of people glaze over it. I have a buyers list and a general list which is MUCH bigger, but I'd much sooner give up the general list as it's not nearly as profitable.

              This is not true.

I agree with jasonl70 that the open rates are pretty low. Does your autoresponder service have a way for you to split test mailings? If so, definitely use it to test out your subject lines. Also, try to leave "cliffhangers" at the end of each email. Think of TV shows like 24 and Lost. Use suspense and curiosity to condition them from day one look forward to your next mailing. This should help with your open rates.

What are you offering them for opting into your list?

As far as when to start promoting, I say do it from day one. Create a helpful report that you can sell for a low price (maybe $7) and offer it as a one-time offer immediately after they subscribe. This will not only help to offset some of the ad costs but you'll be building a buyers list AND getting people in the mindset that you will be promoting products to them.

I've noticed that if you wait too long to promote, people become conditioned to getting things for free. You want to condition them to open their wallets. Starting small with a high-quality, low priced report is a good way to do this.

Your promo ratio seems like a good one, however, EVERY email should present an opportunity for people to buy from you. That's not to say that each should be a hardcore promo but you can work ways into your informational emails that have things for people to buy. For example, you could talk about an SEO tactic that is working for you. Tell them how to do it but at the end provide them with a paid way to do it easier or better or a product that will do it for them. They get the information on how to do the method but you also get some sales without alienating your list. Win-win.

To increase sales for your hardcore promos, you may consider creating a bonus that ties into the product that you are selling. For example, you do a review of the product you are promoting and you tell them about a few of the flaws. Then you offer a bonus that takes care of those flaws that your people can only get if they buy from you.

Wow, thanks for the great reply. I hope that other WF newbies are reading this thread and picking up the good advice.
As far as split testing goes, I must admit that I have only tried this once with the list and will definitely make use of it regularly.
I have been shy of promoting a paid offer early on, for fear of putting people off, but I can see the logic to it.
I have been including paid offers in my signature, but I guess I could be a little more promotional in the body of the mail.

Thanks for all the support guys.

    Hey Gary,

We actually need some more information. Without giving too much information away and using very general terms, what market are you in (weight loss, dating, cures, crafts, money, etc)?

Also, are you promoting something that seems to have a good track record of making sales? You can tell this by factors like gravity on Clickbank or whether you see ads in the Google results.

How are you getting people on your list?

How are you promoting things to them once they are on the list?

How long do you wait before trying to sell them something?

Let us know these things and we will be able to get some suggestions to you on how to adjust your approach=)

      Hi Jonny,
I am in the IM niche and generally promoting WSOs and occasional CB offers, but only if I know they are of some benefit.
I did get a lot of very cheap traffic initially from adfly - which I can see is a mistake, but I have also got sign-ups from free WSOs, blog traffic and more recently from ppc with admob.
As mentioned above, I have also paid other warriors to build lists for me.
I try to balance the content to promotions at about 3:1 and generally wait for a couple of emails before trying to sell something. Though I do have a recommendation in my sig.
My email open rates are poor, at about 6-7% and the clickthrough rates are worse. This is despite studying several courses and really trying to follow good guidelines.
Obviously, it is very difficult to canvass my list with such dismal open rates.

      Gary.

wow - that open rate is a problem. However, keep in mind that the only way to track open's is with an image in the email - and images are very often disabled in emails, so the reported rate is always a lot lower the real open rate.

Are you using a service like aweber? Have you tested with your own email addresses to make sure you aren't hitting spam filters?

      Hi Gary,

In all honesty I think you might want to try mailing to someone else's list to test your materials. The number of variables is pretty large to why you are not getting any sales, but the thing I would test first is the list.

See if you can't do a relatively cheap list mailing $25 - $40 to another person's list. You can find plenty of warriors selling at decent prices and mail your offer to them.

Or better yet if you have a decent size list you might be able to do a list swap with another marketer. This would grow your list but you might want make sure you divide the new subscribers and old ones.

In addition check your ad copy to make sure you are doing the following:

      Attention - Get theirs
      Intention - Explain yours
      Decision - Make it simple
Action - Make them take it

Thanks for the replies. I am using Aweber and going by their statistics for gauging open rates; I did not know about the need for an image in the email, would you please explain this a little further?
The idea of trying a solo ad to another responsive list is a good one, I will give it a try and see what happens.

        Hi Gary

Hope you don't mind, but you've got a new subscriber - me.

I took alook at your site and it seems very professional, with clear posts and information. The pop up squeeze is a bit of nuisance, but that's because I don't like being presented with a subscription offer BEFORE I've checked out the site (used the one in the sidebar).

If you don't mind, I'll sit back and see if I can see any inherant problems with your mailings. Don't try to change what you're doing now, because I can't assess any problems if I don't get your messages warts and all.

Hope this is OK with you.

        Cheers

    Hi Gary,

It seems like you are doing the same stuff everyone else is doing.

My questions would be. How are you unique? Why should people buy from you instead of a more well-known guru?

Until you differentiate yourself, it is very hard to succeed online. It is especially hard if you just sell affiliate products like everyone else.

Not just your USP, but your entire target audience. Who are they? What needs/fears/wants are keeping them awake at night? What needs do they have that aren't being met?

Once you determine these, you can come up with a totally unique approach and product mix.

My products are very unique - for each one, I only have 1-2 competitors and that is what helps me stand out.

    Hi Gary,
Add a link to your mailing list subscription page to all your email communications. Keep repeating what all you can offer, how regularly you send the mails and how the readers will gain by signing up.Provide Link to an information sheet archive it could even be a sample email. This will help in building faith and a certain level of confidence and thus do away without any doubt or hesitation. Deliver time after time of whatever promises you have made to your subscribers. It could vary from current news, periodical specials or informative tools. Keep it simple, short and personal. Be as innovative and creative that you can be, this could even mean trying out absolutely a different set of strategies. After all visitors will not give their email addresses just because they can subscribe to your newsletter free of charge.Language is very important when building an email subscriber list. Always make it sound like you are the one who’s doing a favor, rather than the other way round. Never undervalue your customers or take too lightly. You must always show them that you take care of their requirements with utmost seriousness and at the same time that you are capable of creating real solid professional relationships with them.Once you have built a huge following, you can always focus on optimizing your email campaign and thus build strong relationships with your subscribers. This is the key to modifying and converting and generating cash for your business online..!

    Hi Gary,

Yes I have been following this thread and there is some great info on here.

I read your blog. Who is your mentor?

While I am new to list building and monetisation I can offer some tips that I'm learning from my mentor Alex Jeffreys.

    1. Set up a new email for research.

    2. Sign up for emails on all the successful blogs who are selling via internet marketing. DONT GET TEMPTED TO BUY. Don't get marketed to!!! INSTEAD look at HOW they are selling and HOW they are marketing to you. Which emails make you want to buy and why? You then write similar email in a similar style but adjust it for your personality and product.

    3. When you sign up take notice of the 'sales funnel' you enter. I've found that usually they will offer a free product and the successful marketers will also right away offer a special One Time Offer (OTO) right away. This offer will only be available at that price. Again look at how they write their OTO.

    4. Remember people buy on emotion backed up by logic. Good marketers appeal to emotions.. Please try and be ethical in doing this! I found and recorded some good info on emotional buying if you want me to send you a copy let me know.

    5. I think a great way to remain ethical and appeal to emotions is also to add value as someone already suggested. An example was already given. I have recently done this myself by promoting my mentors new free ebook. Ive told people he has a OTO and that if they buy through my link they will get access to a free live webinar with him.

    6. This goes hand in hand with UNIQUE selling point. Why do they want to buy from you.

Anyway I'm not expert but I've found it to be helpful. I think you and I are at similar levels and would love to connect sometime. I'll leave a comment on your blog and then you will have my email.

Would be good to get in touch!

      Nick
Thanks Nick for the outstanding reply, I would love to get a copy of the emotional buying information. My mentor is Marc Milburn, whom I believe also trained with Alex Jeffreys. Unfortunately, Marc is dealing with a family issue just now, so I thought I would ask my friends on the WF for some advice - and what a great idea that was!

By the way, I just clicked on the confirm subscription link for your list and got an error page. The confirmation worked fine, but you may want to look into why there is an error page. I'm sure that it is an easy fix, but as you know I have my own error page to swear at!

What's your list open rate? Are they actually opening and reading your emails? The list might not be targeted (not interested in your product or service).. To be successful at email marketing you need a tarted list.. Make sure you use an ESP that allows you to track everything from open rates to click rates to email bounce reates..

    Hey Gary,

Just to let you know that I had to dig your confirmation
email from the spam folder when I subscribed to your list.

    I used Gmail.

Now I'm not sure if having in your sentence the wordings
"free gifts" could have been considered as spam when is
just the very first email you send over.

I normally receive those kind of keywords (from Aweber
    emails
) without any problems so maybe you can try
rewording that email to something less spammy sounding
    maybe?

    Just my two cents!
