Affiliate Marketing - Am I Doing It Right?

Hey Warriors,

I used to market online about 10 years ago and did pretty well. Things started to change and everything fell apart. I had to get a sales job back in the real world to support my family. That's what I've been doing for the past 8 years or so.

Working in the corporate world has crushed the joy out of me, and I've decided to start working online doing what I love again, no matter what it takes! Of course after 8 years now I'm a complete newbie again. So I took a crash course and have been working on it nights, weekends, and any time in between. I have about 40 hours a week I can devote to it.

This is what I have learned, and am now trying to implement. I may have some of this wrong so I'm asking (begging) for some constructive feedback.

• I started my affiliate site with Wordpress, I also bought the Thesis Theme addon. I did my research for an affiliate product. I know the one I chose is probably over saturated but I'm doing it as a test site, and I actually found a pretty decent key word for the product without a ton of competition. The site I built is I used All in One SEO pack and designed it to drive traffic to my affiliate. Any feedback on my site itself would be greatly appreciated.

• I learned that backlinking is the best way to increase my page ranking in Google, and drive traffic to my review site. The 4 most effective ways to backlink I learned are;

1. Find out who the top page rankers are in my niche, and grab their backlinks, then use scrapebox to make sure I only use the ones that are indexed. I also needed to buy a subscription to a proxie supplier so my ip doesn't get banned from Google. I then submit my url to all the same sites.

2. I write articles and submit them to places like EZA in order to achieve backlinks with more weight. After EZA approves my article, I then submit to many other article sites, but submit to EZA first because they won't approve my article if it's posted somewhere else.

I also read that I should post my new articles to my own site before EZA, but won't EZA decline my article because it's posted somewhere else? I created a couple articles, I submitted one to EZA, the other one I just started submitting to other sites like GoArticles.com, Sooper Articles, etc.

I got approved and published, but I found that the link back to my site was removed, or didn't work correctly, so I'm a little confused there.

3. The next method I learned was to use Comments for backlinks. I heard about a site called Actually Rank that will give you a list of high PR blog sites, and all you have to do is go down a list and post your comments. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm seriously considering it.

4. Next, I heard that there are Networks of blog sites that allow you to post to their whole network for a fee. I would like to hear more about these sites if anyone has some feedback.

5. Finally, I learned I need to boost all my best backlinks. I heard of 2 services that I can use to do this if I don't want to do it manually. They are, Backlink Booster, and 1 hour backlinks. I'm also considering these services as an option.

This is starting to cost me more and more with all these addon's and other services. I don't have a lot to spend and I have to be careful, but I also know sometimes you have to spend money to make money. If anyone could let me know if I'm on the right track here, and what I could do to get their faster I would be very grateful.

Once I can get $3000-$4000 per month coming in, I can quit my other job completely and start living again!

Thanks again for any help you might throw my way, and I wish all you continued success!

A key following list is huge for any product or sites success, once you get your following base email list you can expand it as time goes but you will have a set group that gets your updates and product releases which helps your seo and traffic through your site or products.

Sorry - had to step in here. Contrary to what's said here I would be VERY careful before paying for anything with the name Benwell on it. Look for IMPARTIAL reviews, before you do. I know there were some very good references on IM Report Card a while back, but I'm not sure whether they've been removed.

Yeah, for EzineArticles give them their own original article. Always post fresh original content on your site. I like to publish an article on my site first & then write a shorter version or a spin off of one of the points and publish that to the article directories - have it pull the reader back to my site for more info.

It's also really easy to add in social bookmarking to the backlink mix. You can do this yourself or go to Fiverr & outsource it real cheap.

You could also distribute blog posts written by you to blog networks.

Directory submissions is another good option to add to your arsenal, though it's a slower tortoise approach - may take a month to get these links indexed & working for you.

But overall, you're definitely on the right track. Most important, you're taking action!

No, this part really isn't right at all.

Article directories (including EZA) don't require previously unpublished content.

It's fully explained in this post.

Yes; it would be very unwise indeed not to do that.

Originally Posted by LifeinVegas View Post

No. As long as you don't submit it to EZA in a different name/pen-name (which might very reasonably make them wonder if you'd stolen it!). It doesn't matter how many times it's been published elsewhere, or where. Your own site, other people's sites, other directories, anywhere you like, as long as the author's name/pen-name matches and you own it (and it otherwise complies with their editorial guidelines, of course).

It makes no sense at all (compared with the alternative) to give EZA an article which you haven't already published and had indexed on your own site. You can be the cumulative, long-term SEO beneficiary of all those initial indexation-rights.

If you take a look through this long but helpful thread, you'll find a whole succession of professional article marketers explaining at length and in detail all their (shared) reasons for not submitting unpublished articles to EZA.

It's a long read, but it is worth the effort to understand this stuff, because (although misunderstandings are widespread) the long-term benefits of doing things the right way round can be considerable, to put it mildly.

Here is my article marketing success strategy:

I do my keyword research and picking the least competitive keywords with a reasonable queries every month.

Pick my domain name and ensure i have my primary keyword in the beginning of my domain when i can't find an exact domain matching any of my chosen keywords.

I create a site and integrate a blog to it. In some cases, i make use of only blog and this depends on what i am doing.

Submit my rss feeds to rss aggregators.

I optimize my web page for my chosen keywords.

I love to have opt in page on my site or blog whenever i am doing affiliate marketing. I highly recommend this if you don't want to forever lose over 95% of your traffic. Using an opt in page allow you to convert atleast one third of your traffic to sales. I am yet to see a successful affiliate marketer not involve in list building.

My article goes to my blog FIRST before any other site. EZA will accept your article so long as it is first published by you. Just ensure you use only the website you published your article on. Alexa has mentioned all you need to know about submitting articles to your blog first and how to ensure EZA accept it.

Then to get your site on the first page of the search engines you will need a lot of backlinks.

    My back link strategies are:

    Article marketing

    Web 2.0

    Blog commenting

    Press release

    Forum posting

      John,

Do you know where I could find a list of the best RSS aggregators to submit to?
Is there a plugin you would reccomend for Wordpress that sets up an opt in form?

      Thanks for the help.

Guest blogging is always a good idea. Look around for other blogs that are related to your niche and send an email offering an article in exchange for a backlink. You may have to email a lot of blog owners, but eventually a couple will bite. Send them a well-researched, thorough article that is relavent to both your site and their blog. It is a great way to get a backlink and targeted traffic to your site.

Repurposing the content is a good idea too... turning your articles in Powerpoint presentation and submiting to slide share directories.

Turn that powerpoint into a video and uploading to youtube and another video share sites.

Record your article on audio and syndicate it to podcast sites.

Take a few articles and make a PDF and distribute it to doc sharing sites.

Use that pdf and add a pad file to upload to software directories (great for list building)

Bookmark your pages to onlywire or social monkey or pixelpipe or syndic8

Those are methods to get traffic without having to spend any money (unless you consider outsourcing)

LifeinVegas, you've done your homework for sure. I use ActuallyRank for blog commenting and love it. Expect some duds in the service, but overall you'll find some great linking opportunities.

I toyed with boosting links, but don't bother any more. Give it try if you want, but it's more hassle than it's worth.

Before you buy all the backlinking goodies, think about your affiliate marketing business model.

For instance, is it going to be a pure affiliate marketing site with reviews and going for organic search engine traffic? If so, aggressive backlinking as you propose is a good idea.

However, if you're working on building up an audience of loyal readers in a niche, then I'd spend less time building backlinks and more time networking in the niche with guest blogging, maybe some social media, and definitely article syndication.

The loyal following approach takes longer, but if you achieve it, you can create a terrific online biz that once you establish authority, you'll have sites linking to you and you'll establish momentum. Moreover, you'll have an audience ready to buy your products.

The pure affiliate website promoting products and writing about products is a different model that requires more backlinking and you won't really develop a loyal following. That said, you can build a list at the same time and build a following via the list.

Both models work great if you consistently work at it.

Whatever you do, write great stuff. If you write reviews and info sites on products/services, write great stuff. If you're building an audience, then come up with some unique stuff with your perspective. The audience approach is best if you have experience in the niche. The pure affiliate marketing site is best if you have experience, but it's not necessary. Research can always get you informed quickly.

That makes sense jgant. Perhaps going both ways is the answer..

I'll start building a loyal following for a niche for the long term, and at the same time build several pure affiliate sites for the short term.

By the way I followed your links, I see what you're talking about, awesome job!

      Thanks

If the affiliate site you are talking about is in your signature. I would be very careful, because it looks to me to be a flog and from what I hear the FTC frowns very heavily on those kind of sites. I never went the flog route, but I have done the general affiliate review sites without actually buying the product and had some small success. Ultimately looking back this was a mistake, because if you give honest reviews you make more money long term and you make more money right now. Internet users have gotten smarter and they can tell fake review sites a whole lot easier now. If I was you I would take video of you actually unboxing products and giving your brutally honest review. (use screen capture for eproducts) By doing this you can build trust with your email list and be able to leverage social media like twitter and facebook

I agree, a review with a demonstration video and actually using it would be more powerful. I do have a link to my Affiliate Agreement page to be in compliance with the FTC however.

I am going to do another review on the same product, the HCG diet drops, because I'm going on it! Maybe I'll do a before after video or photo, or something like that.

Should I create a whole new site for it, or just change the content?

      Thanks.
