How many words per minute can you type? Do you use a typing program to increase your speed?

How many articles an hour do you send out?

It totally depends on the quality, style and subject of the article. I've spent 5 minutes on articles before and I've spent more than an hour on them as well.

A couple of years ago, I went through Jason Fladlien's "7 Minute Articles" course. While I can't write an article in 7 minutes, I'm definitely a lot faster since watching those videos.

The key is to do very very quick research up front (a couple minutes tops) and come up with an outline where you have two or three main points with each having a couple sub-points, and just write. Forget grammar, forget everything. Have it flow.

      Two more quick tips:
      1) Dragon Naturally Speaking is a great piece of software that allows me to "write" super fast.

      2) I keep index cards around my desk. I write one idea on them each and sometimes shuffle through them for ideas. I then place them in piles and organize them into paragraphs for articles and chapters for books.

Bonus Tip: I also highlight parts of ebooks that give me ideas. I then export the highlighted parts to Word, where I edit them and then separate into single ideas/paragraphs. I then print directly on the index cards. It makes writing articles, info products, and even books much easier and organized.

It depends on the purpose of the article and the topic. For a simple article that's going to be put on directories and is meant only to get a clickthru, then it can be as little as 15 minutes if I know the topic.

If I don't know the topic, I may have to research and how much time that takes depends on how easy the topic is to understand and learn the basics.

For an article that will go on your website and is meant to brand you as an expert, I've taken days to craft because I want to be sure that it makes you look credible.

I almost never do multiple articles in an hour but on those rare occasions I've managed to get up to 3 done.

If it takes you any longer than this you either need to go into freelance writing or prepare to wait a loooong time to see cash roll in.

How long is a piece of string? To write a quality article takes me 45 minutes - an hour minimum ... it can be much longer depending on the research needed. So ...

      1) If I'm writing them myself, I write them in blocks of articles. This way I can do research for all of them at once, then sit and crank out the articles. So it's literally set aside a day for the task.

      2) I HAVE to always watch what my time is worth. What other revenue producing activities could I be doing with that full day. So dadamson's quote (below) is spot on. You have to know when it's time to outsource.

      3) But outsourcing itself is an acquired skill. Your best bet is to build a team of writers you know and trust over time. Then you can get the quality you want ... WHEN you want it ... at the price you can justify.

At least an hour if the article is worth anything at all to my reader.

This means researching a topic thoroughly and accurately and synthesizing a unique take on the information that my readership will be able to understand (presumably).

This is why I charge some of the most outrageous prices for my article writing service on the entire Warrior Forum; good articles are HARD work. :p

Yeah, it takes me usually an hour too. I was hoping someone had my style. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one, and being slower won't bar me from making an income.

It's more relaxing to do it that way too.

      Hey Man,

I agree, every topics should be should be thoroughly researched and should be supported with facts.

In addition, the number of words should not be measured along with time. We should analyze its value, uniqueness, and how it will be appreciated by reader per content. Ideally, articles should be at least 450 words. Ezine articles mentioned that the sweet spot in articles are fond to have 450-700 words. Hope that helps..

Great post because it is refreshingly "honest". I am aghast at the quality of articles that I most often see. I often wonder if the writer ever took an English class, based upon grammar and spelling alone.

I firmly believe that if you're going to write a meaningful article then take the time to do it well. Check spelling and grammar. Make sure there is a point to the article that moves the reader in some way - to action - to understanding - to knowledge - to some emotion. On the other hand, if you cannot accomplish this because of some short-coming, then get someone to do it for you who can do it well. Have them take YOUR ideas and write it masterfully.

      Best Wishes,
      Ray Delworth

For me, it depends on the subject matter and stuff. If it's a niche I am familiar with, I can basically type from my head to the page. I would really about your speed and all that. Once you get used to doing it, your speed will naturally increase. Just do you.

The typing speed is useless if you will take a lot of time to think on what you are going to write. (Just a fact!)

I spend 1 hour on writing a 600 word article. However if its not my niche I usually take 2 hours or 3.

If I'm writing an article to promote my own product/sites/service, I'll typically take less than 20 minutes. I'll just grab a random review from someone else describing a similar product/site/service, then run through with a thesaurus in the next tab changing words as I go.

If I'm writing an article of around 500 words for someone else, I'll usually take between 1 - 2 hours..

I don't know what surprises me more, Jacob: the fact that you take other people's content and re-word it to suit your purpose or the fact that you so casually admit it in public. Strange though it seems, I suppose you must genuinely imagine that "you're not doing anything wrong"?!

I write articles fairly quickly. I can type about 100 words a minute so I can knock out a 400 word article quickly. The reason I can write articles so fast is because I write about subjects I know quite a bit about. These are things that I am constantly reading and learning about so I always have something to write an article about. Whenever I learn something new, I write about it.

When you first start writing articles it will take a lot of time cause you are constantly reading and re-reading everything you typed. Just write. Don't over think it. Yes grammar and spelling are very important, but don't fixate on them so much that it takes you an hour just to type 300 words.

For a 500 word article, 20-30 minutes of actual writing. A subject I don't know well takes 1-2 hours of research. A subject I don't know at all usually takes about 2-4 hours of research. I can generally get 20-30 actual articles out of that research before I have to start doing more of it.

Has more to do with style and speed of thought processes and the research necessary than typing speed.

I've tested out at 100 wpm typing but that doesn't mean my brain comes up with good sentences at that rate. On the other hand, the ability to use a keyboard without searching for the letters is a big plus.

I can write an article of 600800 words for my own sites in 20 minutes. Writing for clients, an article can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours. I focus on creating a good article, not on how fast it gets done.

I'll just grab a random review from someone else describing a similar product/site/service, then run through with a thesaurus in the next tab changing words as I go.
Always surprises me how willing people are to post publicly about unethical behavior.

Reading through the responses of other warriors has told me that there are writers with varying speeds over here! Some are fast typists with a good knowledge about the niche, and these are the ones who manage to put out several articles in a single hour. Then there are others who take more time to research their content, even if it means they don't write more than a couple of articles per hour. That's a fine mix of writers we've got As for me I belong to the first kind - if I feel like I know a lot about the concerned topic, I can fire away at least five 500 word articles per hour, and they're all acceptable (Wow, this thread is great for bragging )

    1. I type about 175 wpm using Dragon Naturally Speaking, about 140-150 wpm using the Windows built-in speech recognition program on Vista. Without that software I type about 75 wpm.

    2. It all depends on how much research is needed. If I'm writing about a niche / topic I already know I can crank out a 500 word article in 15 minutes or less. If it's a topic I or someone on my staff does not know much about it can take up to an hour or more. It really varies.

I tried Dragon Naturally Speaking once and it slowed me down so much. Maybe I just didn't have 'the hang of it' but I'm fairly sure I can type an article much faster than I can speak it.

Additionally, I feel like I become to informal with using the dictation program. I like to write articles that have a sense of authority to them and I definitely lose that when speaking into the computer.

Yeah, it definitely takes some getting used to. When I first started using it there was learning curve, even after using the tutorial. But after just a couple of days I had it trained to where it matched my 75 wpm. After a week I timed it at 125 wpm. Though I noticed a couple people on my staff who have strong accents had some real issues with it.

Though it took about 2 weeks before I had my brain retrained on how to write with my voice instead of my fingers. But now it's like second nature. Since I prefer to write like I talk in most of the niches I'm in anyway, it works out really well for me.

I usually take anything from 5 minutes to 1 hour to get an article done. Like many have already mentioned, it depends on the quality and whether research needs to be done.

I don't want to compromise on quality so I usually spend more time, neither do I want to spend money hiring a freelancer at this point.

I think practice makes perfect, and if you're doing it everyday and you're really focused, then you'll just keep getting better and faster at it!

In real writing/editing time it's probably about 3 hours, for me (for something like 1,000-1,200 words), but in reality I do it over a longer period, and don't do it all in one session. I find it particularly helpful to do the "last edit" a bit later, rather than immediately after writing it.

The exact point I was going to make!

Depending on the subject, I can do a 400-500 article in about an hour (including research). If it's something I'm very familiar with, a little less. However, I'm with Alexa - I don't just type and hit "publish" or "send". Instead, I let it sit for awhile (a few hours, or until the next morning). Then, I go back and proofread it. That way, things that made sense or looked good in the "heat of the moment" (but, in reality, could be worded better) get corrected.

And for everyone talking about typing speed, it doesn't matter much if you can't think that fast. If you can't be creative and compelling at 60 words per minute, typing that fast doesn't help you one bit!

The problem I have with taking longer than an hour for one article, is at only 5 bucks an article, you don't get enough compensation to support yourself. Unless you work long hours with a steady supply of work.

I'm not to that point yet, where my skill is high enough, or the work is in high abundance.

I guess if the quality is good though you'd get a pay raise, so maybe I'm just not thinking long-term. I also find it helpful to look back on the article and edit it later. Even editing the article a couple different times. I see something new everytime.

I don't know, a few minutes...a few hours. My typing speed is around 30 WPM, but I only use my index fingers. However, I'm not writing to impress some imaginary radar gun, but rather to communicate ideas.

I mean this in the nicest way possible: it doesn't matter to me how fast anybody writes, and those that can ONLY brag about speed are missing the point.

There's nothing wrong with writing faster, and if you can do it and maintain quality then that's awesome! But don't make the mistake of thinking that it's all that important, and don't make the mistake of thinking that it's that strong of a selling point for people who care about the quality of the writing they're paying for (or that quantity alone is what will make you money).

To me it's similar to those who boast of having a list with 200,000 people on it. Yipee! What does that have to do with anything? How well does the list convert and how much do you earn from it? Because I'd rather have a list of 200 buyers than a list 200,000 that never even read messages. Of course I would rather have a list of 200,000 buyers, but it's not the quantity that's important it's the quality; the same thing is true when it comes to writing.

    All the best,
    Michael

Interesting thread - writers take from 5 minutes to one day to write an article.

I do not understand how anyone can write a quality article in 5 minutes. I'm not saying you can't or doubting your writing ability, that just blows my mind.

It takes me anywhere from 1 hour to one day.

I do an outline to organize my thoughts - topics that will be discussed in the article.

I don't think it matters how fast you type. If you cannot type fast enough to get your thoughts on the computer, keep a notepad next to you and write down the thoughts so you don't forget them.

Another reason it takes me so long, I'm a perfectionist. I can't send an article I don't believe is perfect.

About 5 minutes for a 500 - 550 word article if I know the subject well. I started an ebook not too long ago and wrote 1/3 of it, or about 60 pages in a day.

But it depends on if I'm feeling inspired or not. If not, then it might take me 30 minutes to turn out one page of something.

It depends on the length of the article, the niche, how tired I am. All of those things. I type pretty fast, over 80 words per minute.

Doing quality research ahead of time is extremely important for me. I can write an article in a matter of a few minutes if the subject matter that I am familiar with. I have also spent an hour writing an article to make sure I have followed the directions accordingly and it all makes sense.
I don't like to nick pick every little grammar mistake that I have made. I often find that my clients enjoy my writing as if I am talking to them on a personal level.
Although other clients want the strict profile and have no mistakes but I generally charge a little bit more for them. In addition, the time frame can be a motivator to get the job done quickly.

It depends on the quality of the article, and the time of how long will takes you to finish an article don't really have to be in-line with the number of words and its content. There are times that I can finish three or four articles in 3 hours with 500 - 600 words in it, especially if I am required to write articles which I am not yet familiar with the subject in it. I had to read some articles about it before I could make my own. For the niche or topics that I am very familiar with, I can deliver and finish the article in less than an hour.

But I could not say that I can finish an article with specific time along with the number of words in it. It really depends on the niche and the familiarity of the topic and of course, the content or the quality of the article. It does not really say that the faster you finish your article, the better it is. People should not think that submitting an article is based on how fast they could finish and the length of the article.

Personally, really depends on the writer since some writers are capable of finishing an article in 10 minutes or less, and some will take them the whole 24 hours to finish an article. The most important part to this is the content and the quality of the article, since people doesn't appreciate or looked into an article because of its length or speed, but the content in it.

I type at 65 words per minute but I can't write an article in 5 minutes. A niche site article might take me half a day! A decent article for my site might take an hour or two. I am so slooooooow at writing niche articles that it is actually cheaper, easier and less painful for me to outsource the lot to my excellent writer.

For a blog article, it typically takes me about 30-60 minutes for something that is quality. I generally don't write about topics I'm unfamiliar with, so that cuts research time down. Not saying I don't research, I just choose to write about the stuff I deal with and learn on a day-to-day basis (SEO, social media, conversion optimization, etc).

If I'm writing for a client, it's as long as it takes to get the best possible result. If I'm writing for my own sites, then it's about an hour.
