Tips on Forum Etiquette for Network Marketers

Hi there. I'm a new online network marketer and admittedly not a salesperson by nature. Just wondering what helpful tips some of you can give me for promoting your product/business without annoying people or breaking rules in a forum environment? Thanks!

Salespeople generally don't make good marketers. That is because they are selling a product rather than themselves. People don't follow opportunities they follow people.
I wouldn't post your link or even talk about your opportunity before letting people get to know you first.

Here is a pdf that should help you out. I am not an affiliate of any of the links in here so I cannot recommend them. However, there is some really good information in here.

Quickly scroll down to Chapter 24 and look at the numbered checklist which you can use to refer to the content of the article.

Kinda like a table of contents but its in the back of the book!

    Good Luck!

Vern, thanks for your input and the PDF! So I looked through chapter 24 in the file you sent as well as many of the rules several others pointed me to. Whew... what a lot of information!

And I have removed the affiliate link from my signature... whoops! Ironically, it was the affiliate that referred me to this site. And I should note that when I said I'm not a salesperson by nature, I maybe meant I have a thin skin, so I was tempted to give up after realizing I had already made an infraction in my rush to get posting while both my kids were sleeping. But reading through the rules, etc. was very helpful, and I am back on my horse!

So I'm learning a bit about forum etiquette. And I have two question in my mind at present:

When you say you wouldn't post your link before people get to know you, do you mean not even in your signature file? (I notice you haven't posted one.)

Also, I noticed in the file you sent, it recommends offering value for free to others in the MLM community. I've seen this advice before, but how do you do this if you're new to (or not yet good at) multi-level marketing? I love to write and believe I have value to offer in the things I know about, but MLM just isn't one of those things! Which is why I'm here.

I wish more folks took the time to listen when the rules were pointed out to them. You've already made a good impression on me.

Sansecret, thanks so much for the encouragement!

So I've seen several warnings about self-promotion. The consensus seems to be to focus on building relationship and adding value to the community, though it is okay to include your (non-affiliate) link in your signature. Okay, that is more me anyway. The reason I've never liked sales is that I find many sales tactics underhanded and pushy. So how has this worked for others of you in building your business? Do you find you get business leads through forums in addition to the great advice which I can already see is abundant on this site? And if not, where do you build your business most?

I love the idea of offering something for free! I am thinking through the best way to do that. If I were to start a new website (other than the prefab one offered by my MLM business), what is the most economical way to buy a domain name, get hosting, and build a database of interested prospects who would like to receive said free offerings?

JohnMcCabe, thank you for the book advice.

BenKJunya, I appreciate your marketing tips. Do you think your advice could be applied to a product that is not unique to me, and if so, how?

Another etiquette question: Would I have been better to do this post as several small posts and respond to people individually? This post feels long to me, but so many of you have offered help or encouragement that I wanted to respond to. Thanks again!

Don't underestimate the power of the paid advertising on this site. The WSO forum, Warriors for Hire, the Classified section all get a lot of attention and if your offer is great, it's a good place to promote your business.

In addition, there's the big banner at $100 per day at the top of the Warrior Forum.

              Hello Dana,

Firstly welcome to the forums , I see our more seasoned warriors are already welcoming you in their spirited fashion. I thought maybe I could be of some use and decided to give you a few tips specifically with MLM as I have about 5+ years experience with it.

Network marketing can be very tricky and personally I would make it a priority to promote yourself instead of your business. I believe it's already been mentioned but creating your own website will be the best bet for expanding your business. If I may I will go into a bit of detail to help you get started when your ready.

Your web page (squeeze page) does not have to be anything spectacular. All it needs is 3 things:

              #1 An opt in form.
#2 A compelling offer. (free report, e-book, video related to your market)
              #3 Good ad copy.

Now the reason you want an opt in form is because this will give you instant traffic whenever you need it. I'll get into more detail shortly but for now the opt in form is to give you a quality list of people interested in what you have.

Once you have this, you are way ahead of the curb on all levels. Most Network marketers waste their time stopping people in the street, pestering their family, playing dodge the salesmen with friends, etc. You want to make sure you never get caught up in things like this. It's called "spinning your wheels" also known as doing a bunch of stuff but not getting anywhere.

Now back to this miracle list. Having a list does 3 very amazing things.

              1. Instant Traffic.
              2. Permanent Income stream for as long as you have the list.
              3. Saves you valuable time trying to find new prospects.
You are now officially their go to person on getting great information as long as they stay subscribed. Not only can you promote your business but now you can further monetize your list by selling products creating multiple forms of income.

Now since you in MLM I have a free book you can use. The 7 Great Lies Of Network Marketing. I think just about anyone interested or thinking about MLM will want to read this and anyone else in the niche feel free to use it too.

Now to help you with making a good webpage, building a list, then monetizing it i'd like to direct your attention to a good guy Gavin and his instructional. I think you will be impressed.

Best of luck to you and don't be afraid to ask any questions.

When we say don't post your link, you should not start posting your links in the posts. Have the link (non affiliate) in your signature only. The purpose of the discussion forum is discussion ... not self promotion, so posts that come off as self promotional will most likely be deleted. Too many times and it can result in getting banned.

There are a lot of paid advertising opportunities on the Warrior Forum and that is where you can self promote until you're dizzy.

If the program you're involved in focuses on building a downline instead of moving product, it's probably not a good MLM. In addition to that, if you focus your efforts on people seeking money making opportunities, you're competing with a ton more people (many of whom are experts on the marketing).

Take a serious look at the actual product your program sells. See what advantages there are. If it offers products for which people have a more effective, cheaper alternative, find another program. If the only benefit to being a member is the chance to make money from a downline, find another program.

Assuming you have a good product (or line of products) that is effective and competitively priced when compared to similar products, you can start marketing. Look at the product and think about what need it fills for customers. Write a report about how the product has improved your life, how the problem itself is difficult to fix, the benefits of a product like yours, whatever. Don't pimp the product in this report.

The report is what you give away to get list signups.

Focus on getting to sign up as members. Again, if there's no benefit from being a member (a discount or rebate on product, whatever), find a different program. If the benefits and costs of the product are not good enough that people would want to sign up as customers, you won't (ethically) be able to register and retain a downline.

Once you have customers, start explaining how they can introduce the great product(s) to friends and they'll get referral fees. Don't talk about "money while you sleep" or "building a MLM empire" or any of the other get rich quick buzz phrases. Don't talk about starting your own business because 95+% of people don't really give a damn about starting a business, but getting a kickback from signing up new customers is something everyone can understand. Once you have people signing others up, some of them will see the opportunity and run with it.

This is how MLM was originally designed to work.

        Anyway:

Be sure you have a real product.
        Find customers for that product.
Show them the benefits of referring other customers.

As far as the forum etiquette question:

Become knowledgeable about your product. Find forums where potential users of your product hang. Put a brief but compelling link to your squeeze page in your signature. Participate in discussions using your knowledge to contribute to meaningful dialogue. The knowledge and logic you display will build social proof to people who see the signature.

Dong the no-no things like starting threads about your product, drive by posting (leaving a short, valueless post just to get your signature in front of people's eyes, etc) reduces your social proof.

When your social proof rises, people will extend it to you. They will trust your program because they trust YOU.

That's forum marketing in a nutshell.

The discussions forums are not for self promotion. Don't drop your links in posts, don't spam the forum, don't start threads related to your signature links just to get attention to your signature, etc.

Start by reading the rules of the forums you join. Like for instance, here you are not allowed to have affiliate/referral links in your signature.

I think vsmith hit the nail on the head. If you're intending to promote a product of your own without annoying people, I think it primarily depends on your approach method. Try not to over-do positive reviews.

Product name and logo should be your top priority. Find such a name that will be the talk of the town for all the right reasons. The packaging should be unique and absolutely distinctive. Select a unique color style and combination that fits well with it. Write an article for your local paper, blog, or website so that you are established as an expert in your field.Demonstrations too can be very handy they can help you draw people to your product. Demonstrations are a great way to show clientele how to use the product you are about to sell them. It is a lot easier to make a sale when the customer himself is certain in being able to use the product.

Your best bet is to use forums to network with people and make new contacts. Add value to threads and if people respect your opinions, they may click no your signature links. Making valuable contacts is better than only trying to get clicks

Hey, no biggie - you made a mistake. We all do. What says more about you is that you listened, you read and then you fixed it - and you didn't come back with a bad attitude about it.

This is a great forum to learn about marketing online but it's not the best place to learn about MLM. I'd recommend you looking for some forums more oriented towards network marketing for that side of your education.

The marketing principles you learn here will still be useful to you, no matter what you decide to promote.

Agree with all the others. I am a distributor for a product, but I do not promote it online. I like to build my relationships with the community or people I am talking to. Otherwise the pitch comes off like a fat timeshare salesperson ya know?

I think the point was forum etiquette in general.

MLM is just one method of earning online and this is a marketing forum that covers a lot of online business methods. Some members are in mlm programs - but most aren't from what I've seen.

Spend some time reading and learning and before you know it you will be comfortable posting. We all stick our foot in it once in a while here. For marketing, thick skin is in the job description:p

You fixed whatever you did wrong before I saw it, and it looks like you took it well.

It's not directly related to forum marketing, but if you're as smart as I think you are, you'll see the application...

I just have a moment but wanted to say thanks so much to sam12six and Jacob Hargreave for the detailed advice and file/link. Also, Suzanne, I appreciate your pointing out where advertising is appropriate. At $100 a day, I'd sure better have a competitive product to sell! It is good to know, thanks.

I need a bit more time to absorb all of this. I'll be having a marketing discussion with my mother tomorrow about her business. Her business is slowing down as she heads toward retirement, and I'm deciding whether to focus my efforts on promoting her product (which I helped build but really requires her expertise) or to focus on building my MLM business. The tips I've received here so far have been invaluable! Thanks again.
