Banners Ads: Old School or ... Still Cool?

I still see a lot of banner ads, but my question is are they still effective? I've tried them and have gotten much better response with simple text ads.

I notice adsense have gone to more, they look pretty, slick and cool but it seems their workhorse is still the simple text ad?

Is anyone having any success with banner ads? If so, what's your secret?

Well that makes logical sense, because words motivate much better or more precisely than images.

But if you combine the images with the words, so that they inhance and are in harmony and they are directed at accomplishing the same things then you could have the best of both interacting together.

Images give no solid direction, while words on the other hand should give some type of direction or induce a predictable action.

I'm getting basically the same results. Although banners normally occupy more space and grabs attention (at least it should) the click through rate is less in many cases. Is there a growing mistrust in banner ads?

I'd guess it's like any other ad media, in that you need a good headline, and a good offer. I know I personally have clicked on many banners.

Well, text ads may have higher clickthrough ratios but I still advocate the general concept of banner advertisements because some people still react better to imagery rather than text. I think with banner ads you're capturing a different segment of your traffic that might not be big on reading everything on your site - so combining the two seems to work well a lot.

Seems like there was a bit of a resurgence from the worst dats of banner blindness, webmasters have learned to use them more sparely and not create banner pages (which may have worked in 2000)

Seems that those marketers big on testing will try both text and banner ads, it's not always clear which will be the winner, hence banner ads that look like a text ads, as Annonymous mentioned can turn out to work best.

Banners that "look like text ads" may be the best of both worlds. I haven't tested that concept fully, but I may do it in the near future.

    Still cool in my books.

But definately not in the popular niches such as MMO, forex internet marketing, porn etc..

But the really obscure ones.. That is where you got to use banner ads.. Even "Holiday and Travel" niches do better with banner ads compared to "text ads".

IMHO, it works- but it depends on the market, and the banner ads design quality itself..
