The legit kind of cloaking is using a redirect so that your affiliate link is not seen by the person who clicks it. The need arises from a couple of things: (1) because there is the danger that your affiliate ID can be stripped from the link and replaced with the purchasers own, thereby losing you the commission, and (2) some affiliate links are just waaaay long and look ugly.

It's often debated, but link stripping is probably not as common as sometimes made out. The one market that DOES experience it is the IM niche. The reason is obvious - the customers know what to look for and how to do it.

There are several ways to cloak. It can be as simple as a site like bit.ly Their service is set up simply for shortening and tracking, but it does also serve the purpose of a very basic cloak. You can also buy various software that will cloak your links. Some of the affiliate networks themselves provide a cloaking service (including Clickbank ... previously the most often stripped!)

There is another kind of cloaking that is not so legit. (Likely to get you Google slapped.) That's when you try to cloak site content so that the search engine spiders see something different than your visitors do. this is done in an attemot to improve SERP rankings.

    All clear as mud?

This technique is sometimes used by graphics-heavy sites that have little textual content for spiders to analyze. With cloaking, search engines and people never see the other's pages, whereas, with other uses of IP delivery, both search engines and people can see the same pages.

In affiliate marketing , cloaking hides the original affiliate tracking URL from visitors and for the search engines.

Cloaking is a search engine optimization (SEO) technique in which the matter offered to the search engine is different from the one offered to the user's browser. It is delivered supported on the IP addresses or else the User-Agent HTTP header of the user applying for the page. It is the method of returning to diverse pages so as to search engines than people. When a person puts in a request to the page of a particular URL from the website, the site's standard page is returned to, but when a search engine spider happens to make the same request, a particular page that has been created for the engine is returned, and the normal page for the URL is hidden from the engine thus it is cloaked.

  • To be as plain as possible, cloaking affiliate links is the art of showing your visitors an internal link when they mouse over an affiliate link so that the visitor doesn't think they are leaving your site.
