Amazon announces Kindle fire tablet - Good for IM?

Hey,

If you didn't know, the new touchpad called the Kindle Fire was announced sometime yesterday, it is amazons counter to the ipad and could potentially beat it with the price being almost half of the ipad, the price being just under $200.

Check it out on amazon here - Kindle Fire - Full Color Kindle with 7"...Kindle Fire - Full Color Kindle with 7"...
But the thing I want to ask is this, is a touchpad a good thing to do IM on?

Because I think it would be a very interesting experience and may make me able to do some of my orders on the go.. but of course they do have restrictions such as slow touchpad typing etc.

Your idea's?

I already preordered one. I always wanted an tablet and this does a lot of what I wanted it for.

If the apps are of the same quality as a lot of the iPad apps out there, it could be a good investment, though a lot of people are turned off by the lack of 3G.

I am definitely thinking of getting one, but the UK version doesn't come out till some time next year!

And yes, I think it does come with apps of high quality which you get with the Ipad because if you scroll down on that page then you see a portfolio of everything and apps are there and they look pretty good!

yea, 3G would be great, but of course that it self is just a pain for most companies and adds around $100.

I must say that the Fire is very tempting. If it were out in the UK yet, I would probably grab one.

I am more of a traditional Kindle fan tough - I already have an iPad and a Galaxy Tab and I always head to my standard Kindle 3 for reading books. I'm a book fiend and don't really watch that many movies so I'm more interested in the Kindle Touch, maybe.

Yeah, Im not even sure if there is a release date for the UK version of the kindle fire even out yet.

          You can't even pre-order it!

I have a Kindle already that I won't get rid of... I love the e-ink screen and it will still be my preferred method of reading ebooks. A $200 tablet is a great deal though. I can really see it being great for both business and entertainment without the high price tag of the iPad.

Yes it is a shame, if it was released before Christmas then I think it would do absolutely brilliantly.. I can see it getting 5x the amount the ipad sells for christmas!

      Just my opinion!

Tablets are great, but they don't really replace your computer. Here is how I use my devices:

      SmartPhone
      - phone (duh)
      - maps
      - social media checkins
      - basic news reading
      - email while traveling
      - portable music device (working outside, etc)

      Tablet
      - surfing the web while watching TV - looking up info on shows, deciding what to watch
      - watching video
      - e-book reading
      - email while traveling
      - light reseach
      - main news reader
      - semi portable music (take from room to room)

      Laptop
      - Video calling overseas
      - article writing
      - ebook writing
      - mail email device
      - mail research
      - watching video
      - creating and uploading video and audio content

It looks awesome and for people in the Kindle books sphere I think this is going to catapult the popularity of the Kindle eBooks even further (plus Kindle in color brings about new book writing possibilities!).

I see it being widely popular. My parents already want them for all of their children (ages 9 to 23) as well as themselves. For that price I can get one for my husband, myself, and still have money left over compared to an iPad. Not to mention all of my Kindle books can go on it, even if I'll still use my Kindle normally... for those of you in the US that want one, I would get in line and preorder one now because I have a feeling they are going to be in short supply this holiday season.

      Its true!

I can see myself converting back to reading books if I buy this system! I don't usually read fictional stories anymore but this may be the start!

Would I be able to import to the UK? I think I may be able to but the thing is I am not sure if it will let me due to the app store and all of that, what do you think?

Probably not. I actually have a website about eReaders and I got sent the Nook color when it came out. B and N sent it to me in the UK to review and I couldn't get it to work in the UK because I couldn't access the store.

The Kindle Fire comes with Amazon Prime which is only available in the US, so it may not work. I suppose we'll have to wait until Amazon Prime is rolled out over here...

Amazon Prime has been available in the UK for at least year as far as I'm aware. I renewed my yearly subscription around Easter IIRC.

Kindle Fire and the keyboardless bargain model are going to do great things for our Kindle book sales - since I started selling at the end of June my sales have been steadily increasing by 25 - 50% each month, and I'm sure that is in the main due to the increasingly popularity of the device.

My US sales account for 90% of all sales, so the sooner they launch the Fire the better for me!

But I would really love one that works in the UK

It's small, but very good. I have an old Kindle and an i-Pad 2. Believe it or not, a book reads much better on a Kindle. In a way, I wish I had waited for the Fire, but I had to have an i-Pad.

I sell a lot of e-books on Kindle, so I think the Fire will boost sales big time. Jeff Bezos is a genius in my mind. His ideas have made me money in many different Amazon markets.

    But back to the Fire.

The beauty of the Fire is that it's integrated with Amazon's massive media content. You can also store all your media you order for free on Amazon's Cloud. That's part of the deal.

If you really sit down and think about all of its possibilities, you can't help but want one.

The question is, how will it affect Barnes and Noble's e-book reader and its e-book sales. I also sell a ton of e-books there. So, I am ambivalent. I don't want Fire to do so well that it becomes a knock-out punch for Kindle. We'll have to wait and see.

It seems like an interesting prospect, personally I would love to do my IM business of a piece of tech like that, it would be a breath of fresh air compared to my laptop!

And I forgot about the cloud storage idea, it seems interesting but does it mean that the actual device will have no internal memory? Because I think I saw it said "why use memory when you can use our free cloud storage".

It leaves me wondering, looking forward to this tablet! I want to import it so bad when it comes out, but I don't think I will be able to in the UK

You don't need the hard drive with the cloud. I bought some cloud space from Amazon myself. I use it to back up important files. I, like you, got tired of the laptop. I use my I-Pad, but I can see where the fire could work as well.

As long as you have a connection at all times... and this has no 3G.

The Fire comes with 8G of memory.

Multi-purpose, it can be many things.

The problem with tablet PC's is that they often have bad looking screen and the touch is not very good and sometimes needs some form of pen to operate correctly.

They also do not have access to the thousands, sometimes millions of apps that are available on devices like this... it is all about the usability!

And also as stated above, it is basically a kindle eBook reader but with a system overhaul and more capabilities!

The only downside which I hope they change is the rim of the touchpad, it is plain, no home button like the traditional tablets have, they do not even have branding, which I think would liven it all up!

The Fire Kindle is pretty similar to most tablets with a few features like a camera left out. As Amanda said you could buy two Fires for less than the price of the iPad so the appeal is price + a lot of the same functionality as a tablet.

To be fair, the camera is not really essential to people like us.

But I can see its usefulness in the long run, but I have never been a fan of having a backside camera on devices like this anyway, just too wide, it doesn't seem right!

The European version may be some time off - It is all about data protection!

As the parent company (Amazon) is American, and data can be stored on "cloud" servers - which could be accessed by the American Parent company - it can't comply with European data protection laws. (please note - this is just a quick simplification of the issue - as I have no desire to sit here typing out the full detail for hours!)

    What a cunning marketing strategy.

They had the kindle, colorless, a 'downgrade' by now-standards. But promoted extremely well on the basis that it was just like a book and easy to read.

Meanwhile, they have the Kindle Fire in the pipeline, waiting to be released, in case a major competitor tried getting the edge by selling a 'color kindle'.

Bang. Barnes & Noble release the nook. Just look at their branding and consider what tells you.

    Compared to

    (kindle is one color here).

So Amazon have a magic trick up their sleeve, a little fire you might say.

    Bang.

A very, very well played marketing strategy.

This will completely dispel any superstitious rumors of the Kindle being phased out.

I'm confident they had this prepared months and months in advance. The timing of the release of the Nook and Kindle by two major book sellers is just too perfect.

    Well done, Amazon.

(fun fact: the Kindle Fire runs loosely on Android software with a tweaked 'app store')

I was going to consider a Kindle Fire tablet. I'm horribly disappointed to see it doesn't have 3G. And it only has 8GB of memory? I already have a Kindle (3G), a HP 32GB Touchpad Tablet and a netbook, so I don't see any benefit to buying a Kindle Fire. If they release one with 3G in the future, I'd definitely buy one to use when I'm out.

I must confess that I am not a gadget freak.

My question is simple: will it make you more money?

If it's not making you money, then it's just another distraction and expense.

The other consideration is that if you sell ebooks then you should look at providing them in a kindle friendly format. Just a thought.
