Amazon Category Pages Vs Product Pages

Hi there,

I'd like to know your opinions on this: From your experience, does linking to category pages on Amazon work or does it distract the visitor? Is it better to link directly to the product page?

I'm setting up a new Amazon site and because I don't have any experience with it, I'm asking here. Sure I will test it myself, but I'd like my site to be the best possible right from the beginning.

I'd go with, straight to the product.

If they click on a certain thing, like a specific watch for example, they'd expect to be taken to that page.

Also, once they're on amazon... amazon pretty much markets it's self pretty well.

      ^^^ What he said.

I've had the best success, out of everything I've tried, with in-content text links to individual items.

You should be focusing on specific products and then reviewing the product and linking directly to the product.

This give you the best results and as Dog said Amazon will do the rest for you

    Good post...

It depends on what I am promoting.

When I make my Amazon sites like product vs product I normally send the person to the category page.

If I am targeting a specific product then I go direct to the product.

      Great answers guys, makes sense.

I think I will link to product specific pages (from contextual link and banners) and also include some Amazon widgets on the site. Let us see how it works out.

My experience is the same - links to a specific product convert at a far greater rate than links to category pages.

However, at the most basic level, there are two kinds of products to promote on Amazon - those that people buy with lots of initial consideration and research such as appliances, tools, and electronics. These are usually things that are going to last a long time, cost a lot of money, or need to perform a specific function.

Then there are products that are purchased based more on how they look. Consumers don't do lots of in-depth reading before making these kinds of purchases. These are things like jewelry, curtains, bedspreads and other home decor items.

In those cases, you might be tempted to point to a category page because people like to see a selection. When you run into such an instance, recreate a category-like page on your site by lining up multiple products. By offering choices on your site you appeal to a broader set of tastes while still limiting the overwhelming options on Amazon to the ones you think are the best.

This works well in review posts, too, for those other products. If there are accessories that go with the product I'm reviewing, I'll lay out the most popular six of them (2 rows of 3 items) showing a picture of each along with their own little "buy button" under the image.

I link to the search results all the time and have good conversion. If I do a review of a product I link right to the product, but if I am talking about sales or deals the person probably wants to shop for a good deal. Then I link to the search result so they can see all the options and pick the one they want to buy.

I make about $2000 a month on Amazon with good conversions, so it has been working for me.

My site is all about one particular product, but I have seen that on Amazon there are more versions of it (with only slight differences). The product is a consumable and the difference is only in the volume of the package. In this case it will probably be better to pick one of them and link to it directly rather than to category pages... Don't you think?

If you're saying that the product is like "soap" for instance and you can buy it in packages of 3, 6, or 12 pieces then, yes, I'd link to just one product page as on that page the visitor should see options for the other volumes whereas a category page could be mind-boggling.
